97 Legacy EJ22 losing 2 cylinders when engine warms up

Featured Replies

howdy folks,

Had a frustrating problem with Subi 2 this past week and after replacing likely culprits I still have a problem of losing 2 cylinders after the engine warms up.

While driving the car I suddenly lost 2 cylinders and the Check Engine Light was blinking.

Replaced the coil, wires, plugs, cleared a clogged cat, and replaced a fuel injector.

It runs great until it warms up and then I lose the 1 & 2 cyliinders.

Subi 2 has 290k miles on her and ran like a bear up until this happened...

Any ideas or thoughts?

Mal

Did you get anything besides misfire codes from the CEL? (assuming that you had it scanned)

Have you tried pulling the plug wires off the 1&2 to see if they're still getting spark when this happens?

The only codes were for misfire.

When this happens there is no spark on 1 or 2.

it only misfires after warming up... not when first started

we also have compression... mechanic is checking the igniter tomorrow

I suggest you check the crank sensor signals and see if they are ok when the trouble happens. If that is ok then I would look into trying to find a spare ECU and see if replacing that helps. I assume the wiring to the ignition module has been checked for a problem already.

Problem solved!

Turns out it was a flat plastic coupling/relay looking thing my mechanic called an 'igniter'

Apparently all the good stuff they put on the roads in the winter here in the northeast corroded it and it was causing the misfire.

Subi 2 is running strong again.

291k miles now.
