shuddering while braking/ decel without brakes

Featured Replies

this is for a toyota corolla but the knowledge should be the same...

there is a shudder when braking..

im thinking warped rotors.. but it is also there when im not braking...

if the shudder is there when not on the brakes, i would expect it to be really REALLY bad when i am on the brakes...

are there any other possible things that you all can think of...

its only when about 60+ mph...

thanks!

There are a few possible causes of what you're describing. Wheel balance and tire damage are common ones. If the car was driven in a muddy area, check that there isn't a lump of mud stuck to a wheel. Looseness in the front end or misalignment can worsen the effect of wheel/tire problems. Swapping front with rear wheels/tires and seeing if there's a change might help with the diagnosis.

Here are a few links with good info that can be applied to Subaru (and other brands ;) ):

Have the wheels balanced first.

Do you feel any shuddering or shaking on hard acceleration from a stop? ( I know acceleration and corolla don't really belong in the same sentence  )

Have you checked your wheel bearings as well? Jack the car up, and grab the top and bottom of the tire and see if there is any up and down movement.
