I am in the process of looking for a winter beater. I came across a 2000 Outback. Here is some info. What is the most likely cause of this symptom? Is it common? How is it fixed?

check engine lamp is on because of

a transmission code.....(gear ratio error in 3rd)

P0733 is the code I was just told. Has 190k on the clock. I did not see the car yet or drive it.

something you need to look into, the 2000 Outback isnt a DOHC its SOHC. so the year is most likely a 1999 with the DOHC engine.
