oil cooler location/type

I need to find a mounting location for my oil cooler. has any one done this yet? where did it fit?

 

 

first off many thanks to WJM for promptly sending out the oil cooler adapter.

 

I have some ideas.

 

#1 I have a tranny cooler off a dodge diplomat. measures aprox 12" by 6" and 2" thick. it will fit in front of the a/c condensor. plumbing will be tricky but as long as it stays small (hose ID) It will work. dont know if running a tranny cooler is a good idea though.

 

#2 plumb it into the radiator where the tranny cooler lines are supposed to go. once again a tranny cooler? and lack of actual cooling.

 

#3 A volvo OIL cooler. rather small but its meant for oil and can be mounted closer to the source.

 

I have acess to hyd. hose equipment so building my own lines will not be a problem. hydraulic hoses are super durable and can be removed easy.

 

any ideas? experience?

seriously though I see what you have going there. thats along the lines of my plan #1.

I think my cooler is more restrictive than that one. a limited flow ability thru the cooler should not affect the vehicles Oil pressure or flow right?

oiling systems make me nervous. just want to do it up right.

it will create more pressure, as resistance to flow is pressure. You want the cooler setup to flow as freely as possible...which mine does not...as i would like to have AN fittings and a slightly different cooler core...but ti works fine.

 

And I did have some leaking issues...just make sure everything is tight.

tranny coolers do work good. They have very little resistance, and good thermal conductivity, i.e. they are used to cool off the high temps of tranny fluid. I've got a copper oil cooler, aftermarket type that was used for a Turbo 400. Works really well, I've seen a drop as much as 50 degree's between the input and output. Here's a pic:

I was told that tranny oil coolers weren't meant to operate under as much pressure as engine oil coolers. Anyone agree/disagree?

 

When I bought my EA81T engine, the junkyard wanted to charge me extra for the oil cooler, so I left it behind. Since then, I've been looking for a good alternative. I looked at a Volvo unit, and they are a good bit larger than the factory EA81T units. I think that's what I'll use.

 

What type of hose are you guys using to connect your oil coolers?

thats really funny since trannys run at higher line pressure :)

from what i am read on how auto trannys work

 

usually the tranny units and the oil cooler units are pretty much the same stuff you get out of a jegs or other perfomance catalog is usually universal unless specified

 

just look at the psi rating on the coolers if its good for over 50 you should be ok

i mean lets face it how many have seen soob pressure over 40? or even 30 hehe

I wonder what CCR has to say about oil coolers mabey I will ask. dont want to void a waranty.

 

oh as for the hose issue. like I said I make up hydraulic lines that are good for 3000 psi or higher with crimped on fittings. JIC connections that are really easy to remove. they are really strong. did it on a VW rabbit once. came out really nice.

I used some 1/2 fuel line good for 300 PSI, and the trans oil cooler I am using is IDENTICLE to the engine oil cooler that hayden sells...BOTH are rated at 300 PSI.

 

BTW: Hayden automotive makes these adapters and coolers that i use.
