brently Posted June 5, 2014 Share Posted June 5, 2014 Just bought a 93 impreza sw 1.8 auto awd. The trans is slippping real bad in it. Having a difficult time finding a trans for it but i found a 98 impreza that the trans is good. I know that it will bolt up but will it work in the 93? What year trans will fit the 93? idosubaru Posted June 5, 2014 Share Posted June 5, 2014 auto trans interchange is a really hard thing to ascertain, you're unlikely to get much info on it. i usually google auto trans swaps and try to find someone that has done something close to what i'm trying to do. 1998 may be Phase II transmission, so tread carefully as there were a few changes. there are different gear ratios too - your 1993 will probably be a 3.9 trans, so you'll need to match that. there are only three auto options for 4 cylinders - 3.9, 4.11, and 4.44, with 4.44 being only for 2.5 liter engines. if you get a 4.11 or 4.44 transmission you can work around it by simply swapping the rear diff to match. brently Posted June 5, 2014 Author Share Posted June 5, 2014 Thanks for the quick reply. What is the difference between phase 1 and phase2? I kinda figured that the rear carrier would be different. From what i found out the 98 is 411 and im not sure what the 93 has. So i was figuring that for safetys sake changing the rear also. 86BRATMAN Posted June 5, 2014 Share Posted June 5, 2014 The 98 rs is still phase 1 transmission, you will need to swap your rear diff as this will be a 4.44 final drive car. I have to drive it about 50 miles to get it home so i guess that will let me know if theres any issues with the tranny. Ill post and let you all know how the swap goes. brently Posted July 14, 2014 Author Share Posted July 14, 2014 Well the deal for the 98 fell through. The guy sold it from under me. But got a 95 impreza that has a 2.2 auto and fairly low mileage.
