Old upholstery on new seats?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone tried to slip the upholstery from a GL seat over a seat from different car?

The seats in my Brat are shot, but the upholstery is in surprisingly decent shape. I'd like to keep that 80's blue plaid look, but also have seats that do not suck. I was thinking I'd buy some early impreza seats or something and slip my upholstery over them. Would this work?

I've never messed with seat swapping or upholstery repair or anything, so if this is an obviously terrible idea, let me know.

I haven't done it yet but planned on doing something similar. I like to keep the stock look but the foams all dried out. I talked to my auto upholstery buddy and he said he could easily use the old everything and rebuild the foam to my specs then I could have a seat that looked and functioned like the old one but was much more comfy and supportive to my needs. I'm gonna try and go custom like that. It was going to be $100 for one seat which was similar to buying another seat.

The Impreza seats are around 1" wider and have thicker bolster support on the sides. I have Impreza RS seats and there is no way an EA81 seat cover will fit it.

Bummer.

Maybe I'll just have to figure out which newer seats look the least out of place. I know I can get a pair of 09 forester seats for $100, 98 forester for $40, or 04 Outback for $100. All are gray. I know I can rig up brackets to make any of them work.

Anyone have a suggestion in terms of fit/appearance?
