Yes I'm doing a complete restoration and it is a learning curve. LOL First time I've ever done this. Hoses, Valve covers, Struts, Oil Pan reseal, and some exhaust work is all that is left to do. Already taken care of a huge laundry list as apparently the original owner left everything factory original. Interesting on many parts. My plan is to finish with the mechanical, then attend to the exterior, after which I will attend to the interior (upholstery) Anyhow, Here is the question. Recently I inquired about the timing belt at the Subaru dealership Auto shop and was told that my car runs off a Gear rather than a timing belt. No other information. Just that. Never heard of a car that doesn't use a timing belt. So it seems kind of strange. Any insight into this from those of you who are more knowledgeable? Thanks a ton in advance. -Doogie P.S. Does anyone know why this model came with only the driver's side rear view mirror? I double checked the work history and there is no record of it ever having had a passenger side rear view mirror. naru Posted February 24, 2015 Share Posted February 24, 2015 Only engines w/camshaft(s) mounted in the head use timing belts.Even some of them use chains instead. Engines w/cams in the block(like yours) use chains or gears(best). You have probably heard of a small block Chevy 327-350 etc.No timing belts on those. Friday she goes in for new Valve covers and next week she goes in for a complete Hose change over. rdweninger Posted February 25, 2015 Share Posted February 25, 2015 Going to the price shop? Where's the fun in that? You might ask exactly what hoses are being changed. I believe there are 7 of them. You might only be getting 2 changed. I don't want to tell you what to do ... but if it were me .... I would get some solid advice/instructions from HTKYSA & USMB .... get the son involved ... and have some good 'ole shop mechanics bonding. Pics of the '83 ? Mechanical wise, Slightly lacking in knowledge in that department with vehicles so I'm learning as I go along. I will make photographs of the engine tomorrow.
