  1. Ok, Total noob question here. Kind of learning as I go along. So I've had my 83' DL 1.6 for several months now. She only has 95K (original miles/ I'm the second owner) Had a lot done to her. Recently she started sputtering when idling at a stop light and when I start her up she is idling too high and sounds like she is back firing when i press on the gas. Any ideas? Any advice from those of you who are more knowledgeable than I am is much appreciated. V/r, Doogie

  3. Today Elsia (her name) Received a new set of die cast silver and black pedal covers in addition to new black and silver seat covers, new classical chrome license cover frames, and a bottom to top chrome polishing of her bumpers and trim. She also got her front and rear light covers washed and detailed along with a newer modified set of wiper blades. She is a very happy Subie right now.
  4. This is the first vehicle I've ever considered doing any restore work on. Mechanical wise, Slightly lacking in knowledge in that department with vehicles so I'm learning as I go along. I will make photographs of the engine tomorrow.
  5. As requested here are some photographs. I'll make some better photographs soon. Just got the 83 back out of the shop. Took care of the Valve covers and the clutch cable today.
  6. The car is definitely a 1983 DL 1.6H Hard top. Yes the engine is definitely carbureted. When the shop read the codes they told me it is the vehicle speed sensor. Now on a logical point this is my first subaru and I am definitely trying to learn as much about her as I go. I just bought the Haynes repair manual for it. Making sense of that manual is proving to be interesting.
  7. Ok everyone I'm in need of a little direction. ECS light came on so I got the code read. It's throwing the code for the Vehicle Speed sensor. The vehicle in question is a 1983 DL, 1.6H, 5mt. She is running 94,750 Miles at this point. Could someone please give me a few ideas on where to find this part. On that same note could someone explain what EA 81, EA 82, etc refers to? And how and where does my car fit into that terminology. Tall order today and Thank you in advance. V/r, Doogie
  8. Well that makes more sense now. I guess it is a good thing that the soobie has a gear. Great news indeed. Friday she goes in for new Valve covers and next week she goes in for a complete Hose change over. Found a shop that will do the job for a more than reasonable price
  9. Hmm. Let's see. Well She just got a brand new set of all season Thunderers. Brand new Rotors, Calipers, and Brake Pads. New wiper blades and an oil change This next week she is going in for an oil pan re-seal and new valve covers, and a complete hose change up. Next month she is going in for new struts, and a newly machined exhaust system.
  10. Question for everyone. So the 1983 DL 1.6H That I bought several months ago. Yes I'm doing a complete restoration and it is a learning curve. LOL First time I've ever done this. Hoses, Valve covers, Struts, Oil Pan reseal, and some exhaust work is all that is left to do. Already taken care of a huge laundry list as apparently the original owner left everything factory original. Interesting on many parts. My plan is to finish with the mechanical, then attend to the exterior, after which I will attend to the interior (upholstery) Anyhow, Here is the question. Recently I inquired about the timing belt at the Subaru dealership Auto shop and was told that my car runs off a Gear rather than a timing belt. No other information. Just that. Never heard of a car that doesn't use a timing belt. So it seems kind of strange. Any insight into this from those of you who are more knowledgeable? Thanks a ton in advance. -Doogie P.S. Does anyone know why this model came with only the driver's side rear view mirror? I double checked the work history and there is no record of it ever having had a passenger side rear view mirror.
  11. Ty! And by all accounts quite the Unicorn. By the time I get done memorizing both the Chilton and Haynes, I should know my way around her like the back of my hand. :) LOL
  12. Here is my silver unicorn.
  13. Oh. Shoot. LOL. I will post a photograph of her tomorrow. As well as a photograph of my first question Which can wait until tomorrow when there is light outside. Oil was just changed. After seeing the amount of corrosion on the old battery I bought a brand new battery as a precaution as the old one had been put in back in 2007. Also bought the Haynes 1600 manual for her. But I am sure I will have a ton of questions as this will the first manual I've ever owned and I intend to memorize this subaru from top to bottom. . (I'm more of a human mechanic than a car mechanic - Medical provider here.) Thank you in advance for answering my questions in the future.
  14. I bought a Silver 1983 DL Hard top, 5mt. (1600) with 94,434 miles. Almost everything except the battery is original to the vehicle. I am the second owner.
  15. Been looking for a car for a while and I found a sweet 1983 Subaru DL, 5mt with only 94 thousand miles. I'm officially the second owner. Great to have a subaru, but my biggest question is what can i expect. LOL
  16. Hi All! Just bought my first Subaru. Found this forum after searching a bit. Glad to be here.
