parbring Posted January 9, 2016 Share Posted January 9, 2016 Hi,I'm writing from Sweden about a problem with my oldtimer - Subaru Leone 4x4 Super Station ´88.The universal joint right next to the yoke from the gearbox has broken, and I haven't been able to find where to buy a new one.Anyone who knows if these fits other Subaru models as well, or maybe from some other brand?A pic of the disaster:View image: 20160102 122419Glad for answers! 987687 Posted January 9, 2016 Share Posted January 9, 2016 Rockford drivelines sells replacement joints for the staked in nonsense subaru used. This is their application guide for ordering the proper part http://rockforddriveline.com/Staked-In_U-Joints.pdf Not sure if they'll do international sales, or maybe they have a distributor in their company, but I have used their u-joints to fix my GL's driveshaft with good success. The only issue I can see fixing that driveshaft is the broken part on one of the ears, not sure if that will cause a vibration from imbalance or not. Otherwise, you'd probably be able to successfully rebuild that shaft. You want to keep the same orientation of the two parts of the shaft, if you have any way of figuring that out. if you don't it will likely vibrate. 987687 Posted January 10, 2016 Share Posted January 10, 2016 Look at the rockford application guide, it says legacy ones are different (bigger) than loyale/GL (or leone) joints. The one pictured looks more or less the same as a rockford drivelines part. You file the stakes down and there are clips that go on the inside, just as pictured in the ebay part. You install the new joint by putting the cross joint without bearing caps between the ears of the yoke. Then take the bearing caps and press them from the outside of the yoke onto the cross joint. So you obviously have to remove the staking. I put some additional heavy grease in the bearing cap to keep the needles from falling over, if any of them fall out or go sideways the repair job will fail in short order. jono Posted January 10, 2016 Share Posted January 10, 2016 an engineering shop near you should be able to resolve your problem by finding suitable uni joint and maybe modifying the tail shaft to accept retainer clips.It is or should be a simple power transfer thing for them to deal with That has been done. Or make you a new tail shaft and as a single shaft not the centre bearing two piece type, that has been done - got two of 'em I have replaced the staked uni on steering and just spot/tack welded in place [15 years ago] but this did not require a balanced finished product drove it just yesterday still good. 987687 Posted January 10, 2016 Share Posted January 10, 2016 The rockford drivelines part uses a retaining c-clip on the inside of the yoke ear! There's no machining required. They're kinda picky to install but work great once you're done.
