Well since my Forester has been hailed out I can't tell you haw much fun it has been. On a weekly basis I go hill climbing/diving, drag racing and off roading. It has been around road closures, up deep muddy mountain sides, 4 up at the RR crossing (about 30X) and just generally flogged like a step child. I am really impressed that it has lasted 12,000 miles. I regularly run it up to 6000 rpm (fully warmed) and sometimes I let it go to the red line.

 

I can't imagine how this has happened but I can hear some noise from under the hood when letting off the gas (above 3000). It sounds like it is concentrated in the exhaust manifolds but I don't really know. I think that the motor is finally broke in but is this something I should be worried about.

Jeez, I just looked at the photos and was gonna ask if the hailstones were about the size of golf balls, but I just noticed the "Forester Titleist Edition"! :lol::eek::banana::banana::banana:

 

I'm assuming you recieved a "totalled" settlement from the underwriter then?

 

 

The noise may be the exhaust heat shields. A couple more trips over the twoo-twoo-twaxx should probably take care of it.

The heat shields rattle if I do some heavy deceleration like in 1st gear. What I'm hearing is more like an internal sound. Oh well I'll finish tearing out all the non essential stuff from underneath and then build some real skid plates and shields.

 

The setlement wasn't a total. It was about $600 more to total it but I got a fat check anyway. The funny thing is is that even if my car would have been totaled the salvage buyback would have been a min of $6800. The drivetrain is one spendy unit, I guess.

 

My goal right now is to tear up the yokahama's in the next 5-10 thousand miles. Can you say autocross.

Blitz, I have to comment on your signature. You have just put into words what I have been feeling for several months now. Thank you for that. I served from '83 to '89 myself, so I feel I have a right to say that. ;)

Surprised it's lasted 12k miles!?

I'm not saying that this is a junk car its just that it has been honestly rallied for the last 8000 miles. Right now I found a hill that I think I can gap the top. I'm removing rocks from the from the transition and will hopefully get some rain on thursday to solidify the sand so I can get top speed in 2nd. If I can get all 4 up then I'll get someone to make a movie.

 

I know if I would have bought any other car it would have been on a trailer by know with a busted........Just take a gander under a mazda or honda and notice all the extra junk (important stuff) that hangs down.

 

Oh yeah, get this. My wife and I have come to the conclusion that if we tear this car up then we'll know the limitations of the XT (yeah baby) when we get one.

It's kinda hard to bust a stock subie motor just by working it hard. 4000 RPM seems to be a sweet spot for both mechanical balance and volumetric efficiency on these things. Your motor could have a long life operating consistently in that range with shift points at 5000-5500 as long as you don't overheat it or run it out of oil. There's no power advantage to revving higher than 5750.

 

You can put some nasty shock loads on the drive train via the combo of manual trans & AWD if you're being really reckless. That's a definite potential breakage point.

Serious weight loss may make up for lack of gearing.

 

On the other hand it's a perfect rally car. Your not going to hurt the body.

However, I'd still remove some weight.

 

Remember,

If you break it then you won't have anything to play with...

 

Keep it together and play with it!

Thank you Gnuman. Also thank you for serving. I'll be honest and admit that I never have served. My father did, and my brother did.

 

War is a profitable enterprise played out by rich men, therefore scrutinizing the motives for war becomes paramount, actually OBLIGITORY (for those that understand the workings of a constitutional republic).

 

The ribbon magnets are blind secondary propaganda designed to draw a ficticious corollary between questioning the legitimacy of the conflict and being a "hater of the troops". Absurd.

 

I LOVE the troops. I wish to prevent them from being permanently maimed or killed, after all; they're my friends, family, and neighbors. Oddly, it's a tough concept for some to grasp.

 

At first I didn't believe that flouride had neuro-toxic effects similar to lithium (a paralysis of introspection, e.g.; dumbness), but the evidence is overwhelming.

 

I have a feeling that this thread is gonna hit a hot button and should probably get moved.
