Hi from the new guy and tech question

Recommended Posts

First off I'll say hi as Im a new guy to the forum,My names Brett and I have a 82 1800 wagon,95 liberty/legacy sedan and I guess the equivelent of your Escort GT,Plus I live in Western Australia too,SO HI everyone.:D

The tech issue I have is while waiting for my manual to get here for the newly aquired 95 liberty,it seems to have a slight timing issue,So to get it sorted I need to know the procedure and degrees to set the timing on it,like removing a TPS or similar.

By the way its a manual 2.2 2wd version.:D

Thanks in advance.

Brett

Yes sir! The ECU gets info from the crank and cam position sensors and uses this to determine engine revolutions, and hence when to send voltage spikes to the plugs. A single knock sensor relays feedback about whether the timing is good or not.

What are your symptoms?

Are you using the proper octane fuel?

Also, you may have carbon build up, and it may be causing your pinging. If you can get a product down there called sea foam, I'd suggest using it to clean the carbon out. Alternatively, you may be able to find some other stuff or take it to a shop. If you want, take a read at this about letting the engine suck down some water.

After actually taking the time to pop the bonnet on my car I walked away a bit redfaced in knowing now that it has coil packs instead of a distributor. No reason why I didnt notice this on the few times of checking fluid levels but it missed my attention.Sorry for question and If I had paid attention I would have seen this :-\

Might try some injector cleaner and resetting the ECU and see if that helps it out, plus start using some 98 RON fuel.

I thought that pinging was caused by using the wrong grade of fuel? Brett, you could try just changing to a different fuel (like you said), but it does not sound like anything is wrong with the engine. I won't get into the timing situation, because (knock on wood) I have not needed to replace the timing belt or adjust it in any way. Anyway, keep everyone posted as to what you tried an what happened. Good luck and welcome aboard!
