swc7916
When I went to change the oil in my 2005 Impreza Outback Sport I expected it to have the same filter as my Legacy Outback, instead it had a small black filter that, I am told, is also used on the WRX models. Anyway, it is recessed up inside and there is no room to get a strap-type wrench on it. I ended up changing the oil only because I couldn't get the filter off. I have tried every auto parts store around and every Subaru dealer, but I can't find a cup-type wrench (like a big socket wrench) to fit this filter. I would prefer not to get the type of filter wrench that destroys the filter getting it off. Also, I want the cup-type so that I can get a little better grip when installing the filter (I know, you're not supposed to use a wrench to install the filter; I just want a better hand grip.) Does anyone know where I can get a wrench that fits this filter? Any other ideas? Thanks.
subeman90
That filter is the one that came from the factory.... do not buy a wrench just for that filter because the one you replace it with is NOT that size! I know it is on there pretty good ( I have a scar on a knuckle from one) but you might want to go pay a local garage to knock it loose and then just go home and finish the job yourself. EDIT: BTW, it will use the same filter as your legacy OB. If you have more than one soob that uses the same filter buy them in bulk and save like I did.... Matt It is NOT the same filter as the Legacy. This is my 6th Subaru (after a 1996 Outback, 2000 Outback, 2002 Outback, 2003 Baja, and 2004 Outback) and the others used a common filter, but this one is DIFFERENT - it's a lot smaller. The others protrude down far enough that I can get my strap wrench around them. Even if I could reach the one on the Impreza, it's too small for the strap wrench. Smpol19
Pay a shop to break it lose, then don't put it on so tight. I've never used a filter wrench or strap werench in my life. Some times I use some rubber gloves to get a grip on a real tight filter that someone else put on but you never use a wrench to put a filter on and as long as you are the only one changeing the oil you shouldn't have to use one to get it off again.
