  1. I have the same problem with my 01 OBS, if I tell the parts store guys I have 15" wheels the rotors don't fit. If I tell them I've got 14" (which i don't and never have) the rotors fit perfect. Just something messed up with the stores parts lists I guess.
  2. Make sure the clutch is actually pushing the switch when it is up. There is a little tab on the top of the clutch pedal which is suposed to push the switch but it has a hole in it which should be covered by a little peice of rubber which falls off eaesily. A penney duct taped on this tab fixed it for me. Just something to check...
  3. What does this attach to? Are there holes that it drills into in the car itself, or does it somehow clip onto the headliner? I ask because I'd like to put something like this in my 2001 Impreza but there is no such kit available for models without the sunroof. Thanks
  4. How far was it towed? An auto with all 4 on the ground isn't being lubricated so the trans. may be toast too now. If its cheap enough still may be worth it, just may have to think about a new trans.
  5. Thats pretty old, but still amazing. I think the guy sold the shift knob off the car for well over $100 on e-bay last spring.
  6. I've got 136k on the oreginal clutch in my OBS, I drive in DC twice a week, and NYC once a month. I also drive between the 2 a lot so that gets it a lot of highway miles I guess.
  7. Sounds to me like he's talking about the 5 speed gear box, not the diff in an auto tranny. I know with the newer cars if you are going to use synthic about the only thing that works that's availble in the US is Redline 75w90NS, its got to be the NS because this is a GL4 oil. Redline, and mobile's normal 75w90 is a GL5 which doesn't get along with the syncros and leads to a lot of grinding. Mine takes just over 4 qt. I know this is true of the newer 5 speeds as I have learned from experience w/ mine and there are a ton of threds over on nasioc.com. I don't think much has changed since the gen 1 Legacy's but you may want to double check.
  8. Is that quote from Stolhman's in Tyson's, their parts and labor prices are outragous. Sheey Subaru in Springfield is a little less I paid about $1,000 for timing belt, water pump, and tenninsioners abotu a year back. There are a few other decent independent shops in the area too. All this stuff is expensive in this area, noone around here knows anything about the work being done so they can get away with charging anything.
  9. I've had 3 windshields in the last 5 years or so replaced by Safelite, last one was a couple weeks ago on my Impreza. Called at 8am on a Tuse. and it was replaced by 3 in the afternoon for $250 plus I finaly have 6 in. blue tint on the top that Subaru doesn't do for some reason. Anyway, I've heard bad stories about these guys, but they do a lot of windows and I've had a few decent enough experiences with them.
  10. Possibly some air left in the cooling system. Easiest way to fill it is though the top hose first and then the raditor, this usualy keeps the air bubbles out. Its easy to get air traped in these cars though. Other then that maybe the water pump, but I don't see how you could route the belt so the engine runs and the water pump doesn't.
  11. Auto or 5 speed? If its a 5 speed there is a little rubber pad at the top of the clutch pedal which is suposed to push in a switch to tell the car the clutch is out. This pad tends to fall off and is a hole in the metal plate and the switch doesn't get pushed. A little hard to explain but you'll get it when you see it. Anyway go up there and tape a peny onto the peice of metal on the clutch. This happened to me a few years back, I was looking all over then I came in searched the board and it was fized in 5 mins. Good luck.
  12. Take a picture of the one on the other door and I, and probably others would, be willing to keep an eye out for one when were at the junk yard.
  13. The car I currently own appears to have been in a similar accident before I owned it. Everything is fine with it and i have 132,000 trouble free miles on it. The only problem is that there is a fair amount of wind noise at high speeds because I can't for the life of me get the glass to hit the gasket just right. So I would make sure to test drive it on the highway and make sure there is no bothersome noise before you buy.
  14. Yeah and my dealer wants $10 usd a peice for them ($8 if I buy a case) and won't let me buy the old ones...I used to buy my filters from the dealer because the parts guy is a good guy, and it gives me a reason to stop in and talk and give him some business but not for $10 a filter.
  15. I belive subaru covers lamps in their warenty, it may be eaesier to do it yourself. If you have a dealer near by just get them to do it for free.
  16. I'm usually a big synthetic fan, but after 2 years of different mixes including Mobil 1 75W90 and Red Line 75W90NS and a few mixes. I’ve just gone with dyno 75w90 and it works well, is dirt cheap, I still get a slight grind going into 3rd if I shift too fast, but I did with everything else too. This is probably the only case I would say go with a decent 75w90 dyno.
  17. I'm not really familar with those parts myself but that does seem like a pretty drastic diffrence. On the other hand, in the northern VA area there are 4 dealers reasonably close to my house. I will sometimes call and check a few places for the price of parts I need and the diffrences has been as much as 100% before, so its always a good idea to call around if you can.
  18. I would guess Impreza ones from 98-01 would work also. They look the same though I don't know about the plugs in the back or anything.
  19. Make sure the water pump is included in that price. That seems a bit high for Denver, but I don't know how much things cost out there. Thats about what I paid for that job in the DC area. Lots of people on this board talk about getting it done for a lot less but it depends a lot on the cost of living in the area. I've seen people talk about everything from $500 - $1100 for that job.
  20. I've yet to find a power inverter that will charge either of my laptops. Something about the sine wave not working with the transformer...I dunno...all I know is it doesn't work, I was dissapointed...
  21. Yeah a large amount of overfill can cause the oil to turn to a foam which doesn't lubricate too well. Though as others have said make sure the car is level and has been run recently, though not right after you shut it off. You can get real strange readings real eaesily with these engines. I usualy check after I've pumped my gas, oil is warm, gas stations are always flat, and its hade 3 or 4 minutes to settle down to the sump while i pumped my gas.
  22. I never lost one in 15 years with my old 89 wagon. I've had my Impreza OBS for 2.5 years and lost 3 hubcaps. The new ones just don't stay on well...
  23. I don't see why aftermarket ones wouldn't fit. I can tell you that i have the same problem with my Impreza OBS, in 3 years I've lost 3 covers. Never lost one before on any other car. I've started to notice very few of the OBS's I see have all 4 of them on so it must be an issue with the way they clip on or something.
  24. Nope, Its pretty poor at playing any burned CD and it definitly doesn't play MP3 CD's. Wal-Mart has a sony on clearnce for $60 which does and it has a 1/8" inpot on the back...its pretty easy to swap into the Impreza, just got to get a bin for where the CD player is coming out of. About $15 from Subaru.
