Timing Belt - Snapped

Recommended Posts

G'day everyone,

I've been a Subaru freak since I was a kid, now wants my own Subie, I found an Subaru L Series wagon with Daul Range 4WD. Advertising $900 Australian which is cheap.. but problem is -

This fella who owns this Subie said it will cost too much to fix?¿ I dont know the answer is as I dont know what sort of damage hes talking about as he hasnt opened it up/take appart as hes not a mechanic himself.. but I'll tell you what happened, As far he told me he was driving the Subie and the timing belt snapped on the passengers side (battery side/left side) Would there be any internal damage such as bent valves?

Just wanna know before I'll go ahead and buy it...

IF the timing snapped while driving, what damages are there?

Thankyou for answering my questions

Cheers

Tristan

hi alpine raven,

i had the same thing happen to my 1.8 dl dual range, and there was no engine damage. My mechanic did say that it had two belts, and recommended changing both. it did not cost too much, but I cant remember how much. I think this happened around 80,000 miles on the clock. I should have known to get them changed earlier, but I did not know the recommended interval.

While on this subject, I would like an opinion on my recent buy-a legacy 1995 with only 38000 km on the clock. As this car is 9 years old, should I get the belts changed , or is it only milage that affects their life?
