Sweet82
I had the same basic questions. So, I put out a thread a long time ago, but I can't find it anymore? It is my understanding that the 82-84 GL 4X4 Hatches are the same. An 85 will be different. I'd bet any EA81 will fit. Anyone else? Good Luck, Glenn 82 Hatch, well it use to be...... 01 Forester, still is...........
GeneralDisorder
Any EA81 axle - period. (the one exception being the 81 GL Brat - that's a no go). However - a TRUE 4WD axle is about 2mm thicker than a 2WD axle. Often when you buy a "4WD" axle, they turn out to actually be 2WD ones..... some of the rebuilders don't really care I guess.... And frankly, I don't think it matters - I've never seen or heard of anyone breaking the shaft of the axle - it's always the joints that break. I have 2WD axles in my lifted wagon right now with no ill effects. And there only $55 from http://www.cvaxles.com - which MANY board members recommend as the best. I don't think I would trust anything but theirs, or a new one from the dealer. GD
Rooinater
they are the same left and right. 1980 to 1989 4x4 hatch's axles, 80 to 1984 4x4 wagons, gen 2 brats. or in other words all ea81, no turbo, 4wd cars use the same front axles. reman's are sold at all respectable parts stores. also http://www.cvaxles.com granted i won't buy from them anymore. because i got 2 bad shafts from them. everyonelse seems to get good axles from them except me. local lifetime warranties are the better bet anyways. no shipping involved. and i tend to screw up front axles. so it's more convienent to go to the parts store to return. then ship them across the us. same with the front strut s are all interchangeable on ea81 4wd. and i believe all if not most of the front suspension. i have one hatch steering knuckle. and hatch struts on my wagon. just because that's what i found at the time. and it's all interchangeable.
