  1. Thanks for posting the pic though. Very interesting!
  2. Hi guys, Thanks for the replies. This had me baffled for a while, but after asking the same question on the NASIOC forum, I realized it must not have been a Subaru. Check the thread out HERE. After all of the guesses, it helped me narrow it down. Anyway, this was the car in question: Anyone know who made these?
  3. I saw a very small Subaru on the highway the other day and can't remember what the model was. It was the size of a Festiva [maybe even smaller] but was not a hatchback. I would guess it was from the early 90's or so. Anyone know what it was? It looked like it would get killer gas mileage!
  4. I saw this on a Datsun forum and thought you all here might be interested: http://japanesenostalgiccar.com/index.cgi?section=magazine Not sure if too many people know (I didn't). $2.50 an issue ain't bad and sounds like it supports one good cause and proliferates another even better one. I just subscribed. Mike
  5. Cool pics. Tell us more about the GSR. Are there any other pics or a write up on it anywhere?
  6. I will attest that you will get better mpg's with 2WD. Every summer I remove the rear driveshaft [it alone weighs about 40 lbs.] from my 4WD Sentra and put the transfer case in 2WD. The car not only gets about 2 or 3 mpg more, but the performance increase [less drag] is very noticable as well. If you really don't need 4WD, you're better off without it. Mike
  7. I hope it works out for you. Sounds like we may finally get to shake hands this summer! I sure hope somebody brings an early Subaru to this event though. Seeing them around here is like seeing a Datsun B210 - rare!
  8. I hope a few of you Northeastern vintage Subie owners will bring your cars out to this event on August 10th, 2008. Don't let the "Sports and Exotic" title deter you, they welcome any Japanese car '89 and earlier. The first three hunderd registrants get a complimentary commemorative event dash plaque. Sign up is free, you don't pay any entry until the day of the show. I'm in. How about you? Mark your calendars now!
  9. One year later, Have you got anything else done to the car now Dusty? Wing mirrors, STi engine? Update please!
  10. I've never been to that event. When is it this year? I'll be running in the Hershey Vintage Hillclimb in May.
  11. Oh, I almost forgot, I did get my Datsun B210 out on the ice this winter anyway. Hemmings Sports and Exotic magazine's David Traver Adolphus has been after me to get together with him on the ice this year for a photo session with the B210, for a future article. Today was the day. The roads were dry so I drove it over there and David followed me with all of my tires and gear in his SUV. The weather was perfect, and beside about three ice fishermen, we had the place all to ourselves. There were several small ovals plowed there with connecting routes between them. This was the first time I actually got to drive a RWD car on the ice with Menard ice racing tires on it. What a hoot! It was about 40 degrees so the top surface was soft and chewy. Traction was outstanding. It was awesome to be powering through corners sideways with both side draft carbs wailing away. And here's the "money shot". Photo: David Traver Adolphus I was so glad to get this session in, because the very next day we had a storm coming and the roads got all salted up again. The window of opportunity was small but we got it done!
  12. Recap from this past Saturday. The ice was not thick enough for this year's Vintage Ice races on Waneta Lake. So the back up plan was put into effect regarding running on a snow covered road course laid out in the pit area of Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, NY. But understandably, the vintage car people did not want to run their cars on this surface. Well all but one that is: The President of the Vintage Saab Club of North America, Bruce Turk was perfectly game and said he would run his car on any surface. Saabs are tough! In any case, instaed of scrapping this event, a poll was taken among the regular ice racing list and it was agreed to drop the "Vintage" title from this event and turn it into a wheel to wheel "European-Style" Rallycross. So......how was the first ever Central New York Ice Racing Association winter Euro-Rallycross? Outstanding! And are you ready for this? Yes there was a jump and it was awesome!!!!! Marnie was there for a while taking pictures in the afternoon. Here is the link to the full gallery if you want to check out the photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/marnie/sets/72157604022960623/ I was drivng my black '93 Sentra SE-R and had a great time. A trip to the self car wash afterwards and my shiny SE-R was all set for the A.M.E.C. ice races the very next day on Cossayuna Lake. Mike
  13. I am happy to report that CNYIRA even has a backup plan if mother nature doesn't cooperate with enough ice on Waneta Lake. They have arranged this road course to be run at Black Rock Speedway in nearby Dundee, NY. This will be on a snow covered frozen ground. Nice!
  14. Latest Update for this year's Vintage Ice/snow racing event near Watkin's Glen, NY. The C.N.Y.I.R.A. Vintage Ice Race along with the regular CNYIRA Ice Races are scheduled for Saturday, March 1st with the Vintage awards banquet on Saturday evening at the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, NY. Lodging: We have a special deal at the historic Glen Motor Inn in Watkins Glen. Any questions, fell free to contact Casey Creamer at 607-546-5887 or casey (at) senecasaw (dot) com. My Datsun B210 is signed up and ready to go! A Subaru ot two might be nice to round out the field.
  15. Hi all, here's the update for 2008.... This year's event will move to central New York aimed at Waneta Lake, just outside of the famous Watkins Glen area. 2008 marks the 60th Anniversary of the very first road races held in scenic village of Watkins Glen. Tentative possible dates are as follows: First choice will be on the weekend of Feb. 9th and 10th. If ice conditions are not good that weekend, the event will be rescheduled for the weekend of March 1st and 2nd. This year's vintage ice races will be hosted by the Central New York Ice Racing Association. The chairman is Casey Creamer. Casey has created a new google groups email list for the vintage ice racers and other interested parties. The link to view or join the group is at the bottom of their page at http://www.cnyira.com/ . Hope to see some of you there this February. I hope we can get some Subarus out there this year! Cheers, Mike Kamm
  16. Wow, This is a great thread. I'm really glad to see this car be saved!

  18. Wow, sorry you guys were all so busy. This was a great show and it couldn't have been during a better time of year, or have had better weather. Unfortunately there wasn't a single early Subaru in attendance. Kind of a shame if you ask me. But Datsun guys were in luck, as there were quite a few Datsuns on hand. I only took a few pics, [mostly video] but here is a sampling for you all. They had some Japanese exchange students there dressed in their native attire and they were demonstrating caligraphy for all who requested it. Many cars on the showfield had examples of their work on their windshields. I asked a few of them to pose with me for the above picture. Although I don't have a picture [yet], there was also a really neat Mazda REPU there. Don't worry, I didn't know what that meant either. It stands for Rotary Engine Pickup Truck. These rare Mazda's were very special for their time. Unlike the standard piston engine Mazda pickups, these were the "Sport" models. They had the 13B roatry engine, wider fender flares, factory tach, wood grain dash, bucket seats, etc. Here's a bried description of them: "Many people remember the small pickups of the 1970's. Pickups like the Chevy LUV, Ford Courier, Toyota and Datsun pickups... but did you know that Mazda made a unique Rotary Powered pickup?! Yes. Known as the Rotary PickUp, or REPU (Pronounced: Rhee-Phoo) for short, this pickup ran circles around the competition. With short gears, and a torquey 1.3 L 13b, the truck was by far the fastest in its class. The limited number of REPUs imported into the US makes the value much more than the others of this same era. With a gross payload capacity of 1400 lbs, not only could you haul a bunch of stuff around, you could just plain haul rump roast! The 2 rotor 13b 4-port engine gave more grunt than the 1.1 liter 12a. With a rear axle ratio of 4.625, the truck can fly, but that did limit the top speed." Also, there were really nice examples of early RX7's, one of which had 19,000 original miles! There was a really clean Toyota Corolla SR5 Lift Back there too. The gent came all the way from Long Island [including a ferry ride] to show it. Then there was this car that won people's choice for the show. It was an early Toyota Corona. This thing was mint and super rare. All show participants received a goodie bag containing free samples of car waxes, polishes, an event dash plaque, coupons for a free bottle of Sta-Bil gas stabilizer, maps pens, etc. A very nice touch by the organizers. Yes there were all sorts of great newer Japanese cars there too, but in this post I am focusing on the old school cars I saw, because this is the Subaru Historic forum after all. I hope you all will join us next year as this show is continually growing each year.
  19. Hello Historic Subaru drivers, Some of you may be aware of the Ellenville Hill Climb Revisit and Vintage car tour that [Vintage Saab Club of North America] President Bruce Turk, RiK Rydant, and I organized back on June 9th. It was a fantastic time. A full write up with pictures can be seen on page 5 of this message board thread: http://com4.runboard.com/bamecmessageboard.f1.t28004 . The big news is that Bruce has planned another great run through New York's Catskill mountains and is now opening it up to all of you to come join us. This is a free event, put together by Bruce for our enjoyment. No historic car is necessary this time, although we hope you will bring one if you've got one. I encourage you all to join us on this exhilarating ride through the Fall foliage on October 13th, 2007. Below is a copy of Bruce's message to his V.S.C.N.A. club membership with all of the details. We look forward to seeing you all for some twisty roads and cool suds in the mountains! Mike Kamm ATTENTION VSCNA MEMBERS and Guests Lets go for a drive on October 13th 2007, rain or shine. If you want to go, be at RiK Rydant's farm at 9:30 am for complimentary coffee and donuts. Departure time is 10:30am sharp. Address is 2700 Route 209 in Marbletown NY 12440, just south of Kingston NY, (NYS Thruway Rt 87 exit 19 to 209 South). www.mapquest will get you there. We will be joined by The New York Saab Owners Club (NYSOC) and the Adirondack Motor Enthusiasts Club (AMEC) so expect a lot of interesting and varied vehicles. We will make two scheduled stops along the way, one at Berme Rd Park in Ellenville and again on the old Ellenville Hill Climb Road. Please pre-register for this event so we have an idea what to plan for. Go to http://www.nysoc.com/ click on “sign up now” for the October 13th event, then click on “sign-up” More info on the old Ellenville Hill Climb here: http://com4.runboard.com/bamecmessageboard.f1.t28004 After our last stop on the Hill Climb road, we will proceed to New Paltz NY via some very narrow and twisty roads for lunch at the Gilded Otter Restaurant and brewery: http://www.gildedotter.com/home.htm Total drive time: approximately 2 hours 15 minutes. Total miles: 69 Total number of micro-brews available at the Gilded Otter: 8 As always, non-VSCNA members and their families are welcome. You don't even need a Saab! Please remember you never need an invitation to attend a VSCNA event, so bring along some friends and enjoy the drive. We will divide into two groups, one "slower and scenic" and one faster.... Please bring FRS radios if you have them! Arrive with a full tank of gas. Also see attached route instructions. I suggest you print a color copy and bring it with you. Black and white copies will be available at Rik's farm. The route will take us through an incredible array of roads and terrain. Here is a brief description of the route: Through historic Stone Ridge and past many Revolutionary War era homes. Over the Mohonk ridge near New Paltz, past the best rock climbing and repelling areas in the Northeast. Down the Shawangunk ridge on Tow Path road, literally driving through the ultra creepy and still functioning Eastern NY Correctional Facility, a castle-like, turn of the century maximum-security prison. http://www.correctionhistory.org/easternny100/opener.html Back up the ridge on the now defunct and infamous Ellenville Hill Climb road, then across the mountaintop on Gully road, through Historic Cragsmoor and down the ridiculously narrow and steep Vista Maria. Then just a whole slew of narrow twisty back roads to New Paltz. Be there or be square. Best regards, Bruce Turk President V.S.C.N.A.
  20. OK, how about the east coast show then? It's this Sunday. Anyone here besides me going?
  21. Thanks Sweet82. Soooo, is there anyone here who is thinking about making the trip out there so some early Subarus will be represented at this show? Mike
  22. That's cool though. They've got to be just a rare! Mike
  23. Will do. Boy you don't see those everyday! I have a friend that owns a nice original red P544, but the van model must be even more rare. You've got a '73 Datsun 1200 coupe?
