  1. This in from CNYIRA: I am sorry to report that due to current warm weather we have to cancel/postpone the land based ice race at Black Rock Speedway. The concern is that we would tear up the racing surface too much. Nobody really wants a mud fest, and even more important we don’t want to burn any bridges at Black Rock by causing too much damage to their track. As you all know, ice racing is quite weather dependant. For the moment we will shoot for having the event next weekend Saturday 1/23/10 if the weather cooperates. There is also a possibility that Honeoye or Waneta will be ready by then. So this will give you procrastinators a chance the get your cars ready. Any questions, feel free to call me at 607-546-5887. Please spread the word to those who might not have a chance to check their email between now and Saturday. Casey
  2. Here's the latest message from Casey Creamer of the CNYIRA: It's time to get those cars ready. CNYIRA will be holding their first event of the 2010 Ice Racing season on Saturday January 16'th at Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, NY. http://blackrockspeedway.net/ So far the racing surface at Black Rock Speedway's famed Dirt Road Course is in great shape. At the moment there is snow on it and the ground is well frozen. The track should be smooth and fast. Of course because we are so weather dependent, that can change between now and then. Just like last year, there will be no studs allowed. And like last year, CNYIRA will be providing food for all, catered by Terrie Sautter, who happens to be the undisputed winner of last years chili cook-off that was held at this same event last year. Will she make chili, or something else? That is up to her. Registration will start at 8:30 am Short Practice (depending on track conditions) will start at 9:00 We may opt out of practice if needed to preserve our racing surface. Racing by 10:00 am Lunch when we feel like it, or when Terrie is ready. We will end the event when conditions are not suitable such as not enough light, people or cars are tired out, track wears out etc.. If you are coming to race with us, you will need to become a member of CNYIRA and you will have to fill out an event form. Membership and event forms can be found at http://cnyira.com/cnyirajoin.html Please fill them out and bring them with you to registration. As usual there will be classes for Street Legal, and also all of the Menard classes, even though Menard cars will be on studless tires just like everyone else. As for you solo minded autocrossers and solo rallycrossers, now is your chance to bring your car out and have some real fun. For those who ran in the SCCA Rallycross at Black Rock this summer, this will be just about the same only not as dusty, a bit colder, oh, and did I mention there will be cars in front, behind, and next to you. Not to worry. We have a strictly enforced no touch policy for our Street Legal class. If anyone has any questions, you can email me at ca...@senecasaw.com or call 607-546-5887. See you soon, Casey
  3. I too would love to run in a [narrowly plowed] challenging solo time trial type ice event some day again, but they are now rare in the northeast. The only downside to them though, is the lack of seat time. In wheel to wheel racing everyone gets lots of seat time. Mike
  4. This is put on by the Central New York Ice Racing Association and will be their 3rd annual event. It is a winter European Style Rallycross event held at Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, NY. When: Saturday 1/16/10 Where: Black Rock Speedway, Dundee, NY for directions click HERE To sign up to be a member of CNYIRA go HERE and print out and fill out the form and bring it with you. To register for the event, go: HERE, print it out, fill out the form and bring it with you. The Raceday Schedule is as follows: 8:30 to 9:30 Registration. 9:00 to 9:45 Tech inspection No Practice to save the race surface 9:46 to 9:59 Driver's meeting 10:00 Sharp, the racing begins Noon: Hot Lunch TBA (free to all participants courtesy of CNYIRA) Beverages and hot coffee will also be provided. Remember that the base racing surface is dirt, so no studs will be allowed. We will get regular season ice racing points for this event. Regular ice racing rules and classes apply to this event. For more info call Casey at 607-546-5887 To give you an idea, here is a map of the course they ran last year. I'm told that this year's course will be very similar. Check out these pics from last year's event. All of them are courtesy of Ken Moyer. Flying handbrake turns in the icy hair pin. Looks like fun doesn't it? Mike Kamm
  5. Sounds really interesting Jerry. Maybe you could post a picture or two of it so far? Mike
  6. It just occurred to me that I left out the details. I shouldn't have assumed everyone knows about F ageol blowers. [i added the space because the profanity filter on this board won't allow the letters "f" "A' and "g" to be used sequencially]. They were made in the early 80's up to about 2002 to wake up the anemic cars and light trucks being sold back then. F ageol Superchargers manufactures four sizes of superchargers 33.5, 48.3, 63.2 and 70.6 cubic inch per revolution. [Mine is the Max 30 model - 70.6 unit]. These can cover 4 cycle engines from a .5 to 3 liters displacement with one supercharger. They are made from high quality materials, 4340 gears and shafts and viton rotor seals with extruded aluminum center section. All parts are precision machined to aircraft specs. Their website is located HERE. Click on the link for the S10 kit and look at the price sheet. This blower is listed separately for $1075.25, and that was 20+ years ago. Here's pic of one on a custom made manifold for the 2.8 liter Chevy S-10 V6.
  7. In the world of superchargers where no kit is available, fabrication skills are required. Here is a nice blower that will suit a Subaru quite nicely. I bought this F ageol/KF Industries 70 cubic inch, 2 lobe, roots type blower about 15 years ago. This was not a kit, but simply a brand new blower that the buyer would fab all of the other components for, in his or her application. I wanted to put it on the 1.6 in my Sentra. So I started machining a custom blower manifold, and assembling Nissan timing belt and gears for the drive. Mock up before welding. But I got involved in far too many other car projects and never finished it. I paid $850 for the new blower way back then and will let the whole package go for $500. Mike
  8. Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!...... This will be your last chance to drive in one the best rallycross series' around. This Sunday, November 15th will be the season Finale ar Greig's Farm in Red Hook, NY. The weather is supposed to be 63 degrees! Please go to: http://www.psccny.com/rallycross for full event info. Directions: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...36ae57276&z=14 . See the site listed as used on May 17th. That's where we will be holding this Sunday's [November 15th] event. In-car video from the August event here: Who's in? Mike
  9. Jeff Nicol Photo Apologies for not keeping this thread updated. We enjoyed another great rallycross event this weekend with the good folks of the P.S.C.C. The course was really open and fast. Loved the third gear action and the sound of the Suby turbos along with the dual side draft carbies on my old school Sentra. Car counts were down once again though. We are baffled as to why. These are the best rallycross events I've ever been to. It seems that the New Englanders have their own well established series up there and they don't really have a reason to travel down here. So that leaves the Hudson Valley and Jersey people to draw from. Think about it: of the millions of people in NJ, there are NO rallycross events at all in that state. My guess is that the forecast for the Hudson Valley and areas south was for rain and the masses down there decided to stay home. The event was dry the majority of the day with some light drizzle right at the very end. We all got 11 runs and enjoyed hot food and beverages cooked on site by Isabellas deli caterers. The final PSCC rallycross for 2009 is scheduled for Sunday, November 15th at Greig Farm, Redhook, NY. The exact location has not been chosen yet [they have numerous fields to choose from], but this link shows the location of the various sites they've used this year. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT...27637&t=h&z=15 Mike Kamm www.psccny.com
  10. Unfortunately no, each driver has to pay the $40 entry. Besides, you won't want to cut your seat time in half. Seat time at autocrosses is limitd to start with. Mike
  11. That would be great Moosens. We love the old school cars. Come to think of it, is it a yellow Elan? Is your friend's name Scott Stickle perhaps?
  12. It's getting pretty obvious that we will need to cap entries to 70 drivers and go for a quality show over a quantity one. Giving everyone plenty of track time has always been our goal so we will set the cap to 70. We're at 54 drivers right now. So if you're thinking about it, better speak up. 13. A.M.E.C. will be holding a "high" speed autocross on the pavement of Albany Saratoga Speedway 4/10ths mile oval on November 7th. This is not your usual parking lot deal with tight gates and twisty corners. This is for people who like to open it up and carry some speed through the pylon gates as they traverse the recently uncovered asphalt in Malta. When: Saturday November 7th 2009 (rain date November 8th) Registration opens at 8 AM. First car off at 10 AM. Where: Malta, NY - on Albany Saratoga Speedway's Paved oval! Why: Because AMEC used to put on some of the most well attended fastest autocrosses around at Albany Saratoga Speedway. This was from the late 60’s until about 1976 when they covered the track with clay. “Back in the day” AMEC would pull 80 entrants to an autocross when other clubs running in parking lots were getting 30 mostly because of the venue. The course will be simple and fast, yet challenging. You will get 2 laps per run with a few gates here and there and a slalom on one straight away. A minimum of 3 runs per car and more if we can fit them in. We'll run right until dusk. To give you an idea of the course, take a look at a pic from one of our events in the late 1960's: Scoring: Will be with an electronic scoring system. Cost: $40 per driver. Spectator admission is free. What to bring: any car that is safe to drive, street car, or race car, a helmet built in the last 15 years. Once again, spectator admission is free so bring your family and have fun watching from the grandstands. The track will have food for sale and bathrooms. Awards: Yup we will have trophies, this is a fun event. There are no year-end points battles so you can come for fun and will get a trophy if you do well in your class. Classes: There will be a minimal number of classes for ease of registration and classing: 1. Stock Up to 2.5 liters 2. Stock Over 2.5 liters 3. Prepared Up to 2.5 liters 4. Prepared Over 2.5 liters 5. Modified Up to 2.5 liters 6. Modified Over 2.5 liters 7. Open Class - Open wheel and home built race cars STOCK- Street driven with no modifications. Air filter and intake, cat back exhaust or coffee can muffler allowed. PREPARED- Street driven with modifications to the engine and or suspension. MODIFIED - All other street type vehicles. Anything with DOT "R" compound tires. All turbo cars. OPEN - Open wheel and home built race cars. Pre-register: If you would like to attend please let us know, this is an expensive day of fun for our club and we need a certain number of participants to break even. To let us know if you will be coming send an E mail to Dave Burnham at racing48 [at) nycap.rr (dot] com or call him at 518 875 6956.
  14. In the event that there IS someone on these boards from the northeast that might like to join us, here are the event details for Economy Run IV. What: Fuel mileage contest through Montgomery, Schoharie, and Schenectady counties of NY. The route will be on very scenic and less travelled roads, and will run approximately 108 miles in distance. Your “economic” driving ability will be tested. Cars will be filled with fuel by an AMEC official and be sent off at one minute intervals. There will be a time limit to complete the run. Any street legal vehicle is allowed to participate, [including motorcycles]. Where: The start and finish will be at the Fairway Oil gas station on Route 5 in Fonda, NY. The physical address is 40 E Main St, Fonda, NY 12068. Take NY Thruway Exit 28.Take NY Thruway Exit 28. After the toll booth, turn left onto Riverside Drive. Then turn right onto South Bridge Street and go over the bridge. On the other side of the bridge is a traffic light. You can see Fairway Oil and Gas on your left. Turn left onto Route 5 and enter the station. When: Sunday, November 1, 2009. Arrival time will be 8:00-8:30am, first car off at 9:00am. They have gas and diesel and have a large enough parking lot that we won’t be in the way. Cost: $10 per vehicle to cover the awards. Awards include: 1. Best overall mpg for gas cars [1st, 2nd, and 3rd places] 2. Best overall mpg for diesel and hybrid cars [1st, 2nd, and 3rd places] 3. Best Historic car ['79 and earlier - 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places]. 4. Best overall mpg for Street Legal Class ice race cars. Awards and Lunch: This event will conclude about 1:00 pm, and our plan is to proceed up the nearby Checkers Out Go-Kart track for lunch, awards, and optional indoor go-kart races if you so desire. Checkers Out Speedway is an indoor go kart track open year round, and is located about ¾ of a mile south of Johnstown, NY, on NYS Route 30A. Physical address: 2299 State Hwy 30A Johnstown, NY 12905. Track phone: 518 736-4630. Remember to bring a helmet if you will be racing the karts after lunch. 15. Thanks for the reply. OK yes, I have seen that video clip. Very nicely done. It would be so cool to have a 360 run at our next event, which by the way is coming up on November 1st. We will have a 750cc 2 stroker running with us however. Bruce Turk is bringing out his '58 Saab 93B. Should be fun!
  16. You're welcome Sako. I admire your enthusiasm for these types of events. I like all of your choices for mpg project cars to choose from, especially the XT! Wouldn't that be cool! Your 47.7 is not paltry for a daily driver. I get 44 [in the summer] with my '00 Protege. You'll see big numbers at an econonmy run event like ours because we go to extremes with everything. For example, here's a list of mods I did [this year] to my Datsun B210 for this event: Mechanical mods: Switched to energy saving 0W-20 engine oil [designed for hybrid cars], run 1 quart low on purpose. Narrower 155/80R13 tires @ 60 psi. Ignition timing advanced 6 degrees Rejetted carburetor for the hot 85 deg. temps to run at 15.0 to 15.5 to 1 A/F ratio Disconnected the alternator and ran off of the battery to decrease load on the engine. Added springs between my front brake pads to reduce drag. Switched to synthetic gear oil for transmission and differential. Switched from the standard 3.70 differential gearing to taller 3.54's. Aerodynamic mods: Full belly pan fabricated to smooth airflow under the car made from choroplast [think plastic cardboard]. Rear wheel skirts Moon disc wheel covers Home made plastic lower front chin spoiler [cut from an junk Ford Contour front bumper cover]. Plexi glass covers for the recessed headlamps and to block off 3/4 of the front grill. Removed wipers and side view mirrors. Result: 77.04 mpg. A new personal record. Mike
  17. OK it wasn't a historic Suby, but we did have one Subaru in the event. It was Robert Smalls' 1996 Subaru Legacy. How about 46 mpg with AWD!
  18. Economy Run III was a huge success, and I want to thank all who participated. I would especially like to thank Mark Long and Dave Burnham who assisted me in administering the day's activities. Last year's event average for all vehicles was 49.56 mpg. I thought that was pretty good. This year's average? How about 64.12 mpg! Here are the results: Gas class 1. Chang Ho Kim - 1989 Honda CRX HF - Maynard, MA 118.1 mpg 2. Darin Cosgrove - 1998 Pontiac Firefly - Ontario, Canada 106.12 mpg 3. Ben Jones - 1991 Honda CRX - Hanover, NH 82.54 mpg 4. Mike Kamm - 1977 Datsun B210 - Averill Park, NY 77.04 mpg 5. Will Meredith - 1998 Honda Civic EX - Binghamton NY 64.62 mpg 6. Richard Vedder - 2000 Ford ZX2 S/R - Johnstown, NY 59.09 mpg 7. Eric Hoefer - 2008 Honda Fit - Guilderland, NY 47.27 mpg 8. Robert Smalls - 1996 AWD Subaru Legacy - Buffalo, NY 46.64 mpg Diesels and Hybrids 1. Martin Deschenes - 2000 VW Jetta TDI - Quebec City, QC 90.43 mpg 2. Matt Herring - 2009 Toyota Prius - Boston, MA 75.91 mpg 3. Hobbit - 2004 Toyota Prius - Boston, MA 74.28 mpg 4. Dan Mandle - 2004 Golf TDI [Vegetable Oil] - Potsdam, NY 63.41 mpg 5. Dave Burnham - 1991 Jetta Diesel - Delanson, NY 61.18 mpg Historic class 1. Bill Clark - 1957 Metropolitan Hartop - Endicott, NY 44.64 mpg 2. Jonathan Bartlett - 1969 Saab Sonett V-4 - Sterling, MA 44.26 mpg 3. Jonathan Schaller - 1968 Saab 96 - Hamilton, NY 37.96 mpg 4. Ron Kienhuis - 1972 Citroën SM - Long Island, NY 32.20 mpg 5. Carl Germain - 1950 Studebaker Champion Business Coupe 27.37 mpg Motorcycles/Scooters 1. Vlad Saakyan - 2003 Suzuki Svs650 - Niskayuna, NY 62.28 mpg Darin Cosgrove, of Ecomodder.com drove his little Pontiac Firefly [think Geo Metro] in from Canada. He was the last participant to top off after the run. Get this, he only used .98 gallons of fuel for the 104 mile run, and that wasn't good enough to win! Some of the Historic cars with their drivers in attendance. This was Will Meredith's 1998 Honda Civic EX. There were more aero modded cars this year than ever! The red Saab 96 belongs to Jonathan Schaller. Jonathan filled the slot of a last minute cancellation and we're sure glad he was able to come out. The biggest surprise was Chang Ho Kim's '89 Honda Civic HF [High Fuel] effiency model that had the wildest aero modded front end that anyone's ever seen. He was the overall mpg champ with 118.1 mpg with Nokian Hakka R low rolling resistance winter tires on it! I am very pleased to show you the winner of the Historic Class of Economy Run III. This is Bill Clark's 1957 Metropolitan Hartop. This car has spent the last ten years in either a trailer or in the Norwich museum so when he started driving it there were some problems. Lot's of them. He worked tirelessly until every detail was taken care of. What he ended up with is a car that is now running better than it has in the last 33 years. His goal was 37 mpg [last year's number with his convertible]. How did he do? Well his attention to detail in car prep and his driving earned him an impressive 44.64 mpg and a first place in class. And that was on bias ply tires folks! Well done Bill. Here we can see Vlad Saakyan on his 2003 Suzuki Svs650. He was the only bike that the weather did not scare away this year. Vlad rode carefully and kept his revs below 4,000 in sixth gear on the course. He logged 62.28 mpg with his 650cc sport bike. Behind him in this picture is overall high mpg man Chang Ho Kim in his '89 CRX HF. Check it out, he had every body seam sealed off with painter's tape. He had to climb through the window to keep the seal intact while stopping to pick up his card at the check point. More check point action. At the furthest point in the 104 mile loop, we had every driver stop and pick up a card. This proved that they drove the entire distance and did not take any short cuts. If you look closely, you can see Chang in his yellow shirt, picking up his card at the base of the stop sign. This is Carl Germain gettting out of the oldest car in competition. His 1950 Studebaker Champion business coupe was able to achieve very impressive 27.37 mpg. It is a fantastic example with just 35,000 original miles. This is a big car with a 160 cubic inch straight six flathead, a three speed overdrive transmission and 4.56 gears! From the driver's seat of Ronny's Maserati powered Citroen SM. With their 3 liter V-6 engines sporting three two barrel Weber DCNF carburetors, these 3,500 lb. grand touring cars generally only get about 15 mpg. Ronny got more than twice that at 32.20 mpg! Topping up Ben Jone's CRX. Ben's car has a later Civic VX lean burn vtec[e engine swapped into his car coupled with a tall geared HF transaxle for even further fuel economy benefits. He had a fantastic result of 82.54 mpg. Richard Vedder appears to be passing Ronny here, as he is on his way to his best ever result of 59.09 mpg in his 2000 Ford ZX2 S/R. And here's a rather unassuming looking contestant right? Looks can be deceiving. Last year's events proved that pound for pound, diesels rule the roost for economy. This is Martin Deschenes 2000 VW Jetta TDI. Martin drove 7 hours one way, from Quebec City in Canada to run at our event. He clearly has the long distance award. Soft spoken Martin is a very knowledgeable and talented hypermiler. How do I know? Because he won the Diesel/Hybrid class going away with 90.43 mpg! Our previous record for a diesel was 71.55, set by Jonathan Bartlett in his TDI Passat wagon last year. Nice job Martin! For those wondering what my '77 Datsun B210 was able to muster after the flurry of activity in my garage all month, how about a solid 77.04 mpg! Not too shabby for a carbureted car. There's more left in it too. I'm not done yet. During the awards under the pavillion, we had each driver get up and tell us all about their cars. This was really interesting as we got to hear a little about each driver's car and what their mods were. This is Matt Herring. He had the best Prius mileage at 75.91 mpg and finished second in the Hybrid/Diesel class. We tried to line the cars up for a group shot but there were too many. Here's one batch of them. Talk about diversity eh? There are 1950's carmixed in with hybrids! Here's another grouping. There were still others as well. This event will be hard to top. The roof was blown off all of the previous records. Mike
  19. I challenge any Subaru with my diminutive 8 valve 1.6 liter FWD 1986 Nissan Sentra. Yes, I'm serious! Any takers? Mike #46 Super Saloon
  20. Registration is now closed for A.M.E.C. Economy Run III The fact that we filled up the event six weeks in advance is surprising and encouraging at the same time. It shows that quite a few people really want to participate in these types of events. Unfortunately, these events are far and few between. We need more of them! They are not really difficult to do and I hope we have inspired other groups or car clubs to create their own versions of these events for all to enjoy. 1. 21. Wow, that is awesome! Tell us more about it 2stroketurbo. Any pics of the car? Mike
  22. Bill Clark had a car show he was planning to go to on August 23rd, but he has thought the better of it. He enjoyed Economy Run II so much last year in his 1960 Metropolitan convertible, that he plans to bring his '57 hardtop out and give it a go this year in the infamous "Gas Mileage Shootout in the Adirondacks". Here were his comments: "I'm pretty sure I'm going to blow off the local show and come ride around with you guys in my 57 Met hardtop. I found a set of 3.90 gears to replace the stock 4.22s and I'm going to rebuild the carb, blow up the tires, take out the toe in and try to get my lower compression 1500 to run good. I'll be really happy if I do as well as the high compression 1500 rag top did last year." Sign me up, Bill
  23. Yes thanks Kostamojen, I've been trying to get you early Subaru people out for one of our events for about 5 years now, be it vintage ice racing, driving tours, car shows, and now economy run events. I never give up! Does ayone in the northeast have a running example of an early Subaru are are the all projects? Mike
  24. Welcome V.S.C.N.A. President, Mr. Bruce Turk. So glad to have a classic Saab economy car on the roster! I still love the original "Little Saab Economy Car" jingle on the New Salem Saab web site home page. Bruce will bring his beautifully restored black 1958 Saab 93B. Bruce wrote: Hi Mike, I cleared my calendar and will participate in my 1958 Saab 93B. The completely stock 750cc three cylinder two stroke should do very well. I'll down jet the carb and replace my bias ply's with radials, that combined with the original three speed "free wheel" transmission will kick MPG butt.... I hope! Please add me to the list and I'll see if I can get some other vintage Saabs to attend. Regards, Bruce Turk
