Rotary in a EA82
SyntheticBlinkerFluid replied to Subarian's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
9k if it's modified, if you rebuild it stock, 7.5k is about as high as you want to go, but still, it's really high. -
Rotary in a EA82
SyntheticBlinkerFluid replied to Subarian's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm big into Rotary Engines. If you are planning on rebuilding an engine(in most cases yes) be ready for paying $1000 for a rebuild kit. It would be interesting to see one in there. I would say go for a fuel injected 13B out of the '84 and later Rx-7s. A 12A is a better engine, but it's carbed. -
I know the SVX had a 6-Cyl. How large of a displacement is it? I was thinking about doing a transplant in a Corvair. Has it been done. I've been around Corvairs all my life and I hadn't heard of anyone doing it.

It's like, no matter how much info you give them, they still ask you about 20 questions about your car. I just went in for spark plugs, wires, and filters, and it was like I was repeating myself over again and again. It was like this: "I need plugs for an '86 Subaru GL 3-Door" After he's messing around on the computer for a minute: 'So you need plugs for a '98 Subaru, what model?' "NO, '86 Subaru GL 3-Door" 'OH' While he's typing I say: "It's a 1.8 Liter, Carbeurated, Non Turbo, 2WD, GL 3-Door Coupe" 'Is it Turbo?' "NO, it's non-turbo" 'Coupe?' "YES" 'Ok' He get's the plugs and tells me he has to order the wires. "I need an oil filter too" 'So you need an oil fiter for a 1.6 Liter...' "NO, a 1.8 Liter" '4WD or......' "2WD!" 'Alright, Non-Turbo?' "YES!" Then he gets me what I hope is the correct oil filter. It will never stop.

Thrush muffler?

If you do keep your cat it shouldn't be too loud. -
Thrush muffler?
SyntheticBlinkerFluid replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thrush Mufflers are usually really loud. I've had friends put them on V8s and 4-Cyl, and they are loud and raspy. If you want a good low tone, look for a Turbo II muffler. Those pretty good on 4-Cyl cars. -
Is a clutch disc for an EA81 interchangable to an EA82?

Looking for a Switch
SyntheticBlinkerFluid replied to SyntheticBlinkerFluid's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
See, that's what I was initially going to do, but then I thought that using the factory switch would be cooler. -
I want to know what the foglight switch looks like for a EA82 dashboard. I want to install some aftermarket lights on my '86, but I don't know where the switch goes or looks like.

Broke the Clutch Free!

Thanks, I may take a look at that tomorrow. -
Broke the Clutch Free!
SyntheticBlinkerFluid replied to SyntheticBlinkerFluid's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, I think that's what I'm going to do, I just want it for good gas mileage between work. I'll use my Crown Vic for the heavy duty traveling. I've never dealt with a slipping clutch before, but my dad has numerous times, so he's given me some tips. -
Broke the clutch free on the GL. First day in a long time where it wasn't slimy out and I had some free time. Took it out on the street, pushed and held the clutch pedal in, and mashed on the gas a few times, it broke free, but it slips bad when engaging in 1st gear. My dad said that would be from all the rust and would be like that for a little while. I was told when I first got it, that the clutch slipped a little. Hopefully it will last a little while longer before it gives out. The list of things to do yet before it is roadable: New Master Cylinder Plugs Wires Cap and Rotor Tires Oil Change.

Heater Problem
SyntheticBlinkerFluid replied to SyntheticBlinkerFluid's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmm, I was afraid of that. I really don't have the time. Maybe I'll figure something out. -
If i turn on the heat in my GL, it just comes out the vents. If I switch it to defrost, it doesn't do anything, it just comes out the vents. When it is on it smells like a mouse house, I think there is one and it is keeping things from working properly. How does the heater controls work? Apparently a door is moved with an electric motor, yes? How can I access the heater box to get the mouse house out of it?

The GL Runs!
SyntheticBlinkerFluid replied to SyntheticBlinkerFluid's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Actually while I putzed around in if for a little while it seemed to be about 45psi while I was driving. -
I just got done putting the water pump, timing belts, and the covers back on and it started up right away and ran awesome. The only problem now is breaking the clutch loose. Question on the oil pressure, what is a good pressure to be running at idle? The gauge reads probably 20 psi (can't really tell since it goes 0-45-85) I just wanted to know, I'm probably going to replace the sender.

Pics of the 86 GL

Just fix it up, drive it for the winter, and then probably sell it eventually.
