I really wanted a newer Subaru...but I couldn't find a 2002 or newer Subaru around here for under $15.000. They really do hold the value.
I am just glad my mom wanted my Outback...at least I know it'll go to someone who will take care of it, and I will still get to see it whenever I want.

Thats right...I bought a 2004 Ford Escape today. I am giving my Outback to my mom. Her Legacy has nearly 300,000 miles on it...so my OBW with 140,000 miles will be like new to her.
Hopefully in a couple years when the wife and I buy a new car, we'll get a Legacy....and an SVX for my project car.

How much are they asking? Couldn't be to much with the work it'd need...or at least use that against them when negotiating a price :-p

I doubt it's your starter. Most likely the clutch safety switch. When you say that it starts after a few tries, it acts just like my Olds when the neutral safety switch was going out. Next time it won't start, try pumping the clutch a time or two. I'm betting it'll fire right up.
Sometimes I keep on the clutch and turn the key and other times I keep the key turned and pump the clutch.
Is the clutch switch the same one used to kill the cruise controll when the clutch is pushed down?

96 Outback, manual transmission, 140k miles
I turn the key and it clicks. It will always start after 5 or 10 trys. Battery is about 3 months old. Lights don't dim or anything like that.
I made sure connections are tight and clean.
Is my starter starting to go or could it be something else?

Any snow on the ground? My ABS light comes on all the time when driving in deeper snow. It goes off after the snow melts or gets flung out.

I was looking in the USRM and didn't see a clutch replacment how to. Anyone know if there is one?
I am going to have my cousin do it (he has replaced clutches on other cars and trucks and knows what he is doing) but I just wanted to have something with any tips or tricks for Subaru's to make his job a bit easier.

We have a foot or so with a good bit of ice. I get stuck every day when backing into my garage (I'm not going to shovel or plow) but I always manage to get out in a couple minutes. Going forward through the snow is nothing...but backing up is a pain.

You'll probably break part of the timing belt cover where the bolt/screw goes in. Soak it down with WD40 or something a couple days in advance and the screw/bolt should come out a lot easier.

I'll know for sure in a month or so, but I might make it this year. I'll only have my 96 Outback, but it'll still be a good time. I went in 2004 and it was cool.

second owner of mine. 65k on the first (I don't think they could drive)
80k on the second. I've had it for 50k miles now. Still working great. My mom had over 200k on her origianl clutch. I'd say 150k sounds about right if you can drive right.

Funny story...
When my CC went bad in my Outback, I got a new CC kit and replaced EVERYTHING. It ended up being the the little rubber thing that hits the switch when the clutch is depressed.
Might want to check out the rubber thing with the brake switch.

Unplug the battery for half and hour and see if it comes back on. If you can't get it read, take it to AutoZone. They will pull the code for free.

I don't really know the EJ25, but in my EJ22 I use NGK V-grove plugs. $2 each. It takes about 10 minutes to do the plugs in my car. Its easier than an oil change.
They are good plugs. I replace them every year.

My front struts are fine. Work very well...but the rear are about done with. I am suprised it passed the state insepction,

The rear struts in my 96 Outback are pretty much shot.
Anyone ever do their own strut replacment?
I know I would need the tool the compress the springs, which I think can be rented from AutoZone or something of the such.
Cheapest to get them done (suprisingly) seems to be the local Subaru dealer. They still want almost $500 for parts and labor.
I know it will need to be aligned afterward, and i'm willing to pay the $60 or so for that...but if I can take out labor costs, that'd be great.
So, is it pretty simple with the correct tools? Or should I suck it up and have it done by the dealer?

I paid $10 for a used one, and then like $75 for one at a junk yard when I really needed one. I keep the $10 one around incase I need a new one.
My gas mileage went to *************** when mine died...dropped to like 14mpg.

Use the head gasket issue against them. Try and get it for half of what they are asking, and put the rest of the money away for repairs and etc.

It seems on my Outback that the yellowing is on the inside of the lens.
I am going to try the toothpaste method tomorrow.

I know on mine that the parking lights flash like that when the battery is unhooked. To stop it, you need to lock/unlock the car with the keyless entry. Check for a sticker under the hood. If your car has keyless entry it will tell you how to stop the flashing parking lights.

The rear wiper motor in my Outback died a while ago. I am not going to replace it. I never use it.
I think mine died because I left it running while the blade was froze to the window.

I have seen them before. They are a 'value' tire. I can't recall who I saw selling them. Walmart maybe?
