  1. Yes the axle on the tranny stubs. and if you grab the outside peice of the axle that connects to the tranny where you have to put the pin in it will move up and down and in and out.
  2. i just put in a 83 tranny into my 84 gl and the cv's can move up and down and in and out about 1/4 of an inch. One of the techs at my work said it was cuz its probally a dl tranny and those use smaller cv's. Is this true? Also what else could be causing this besides them being diffrent sizes? thanks for the help.
  3. I have an 84 gl and was wondering what is the trick to getting the speed ometer cable back into the transmission? I have it on there now all screwed down but the speed ometer doesnt work. I remember it being very hard to take out when i did the clutch. Any help would be great thanks.
  4. ill have to check to still make sure they are tight, i know the other one loosend up on me. If that doesn't help i think ill get a new knuckle and see if that works out better.
  5. I just replaced one of the half shafts on my 84 gl and drove it for a couple days, then romped it alot in the snow the other day and my other half shatf the one i didnt replace started clunking. So i replaced that last night with a new one and the clunking went away. until i drove back up the canyon from town. It seems to do it the most in third gear, and while the car is going on left corners. It doesnt do it on right corners. the sound it makes is like a clunking that can be felt in the car, not hard but enough to feel it. If i pull over and look at it everything is fine, and it drives fine for most of the trip back. It doesnt do it going down hill only up and it sounds like its coming from the front passengers side. Im wondering if i got a bad cv, the wheel bearings are going out, or it has something to do with the suspension. Also i am not running a sway bar if that makes a diffrence. Any help would be great, thanks. Jacob.
  6. you can also use an air hammer for the front cvs just put it in the hole on the end of the shaft and hammer it out. Makes it a 5 second job.
  7. so there is no kits or other models that you can take a turbo off of and bolt it on a ea81? i would love to have a turbo on my ea81 if it was cheap and somewhat easy.
  8. i tired to crack it loose today but it didnt budge, so i gave it a shower in wd 40 and pbblaster. For the lock nut I would need to tighten it correct? to bring it away from the outer tierod?
  9. Not the ball joint, the outer tie rod off of the inner tie rod, ball joint is already off.
  10. I cant get the outer tie rod off of the inner tie rod on my 84 gl and was wondering if anyone had any tricks to getting this part off? thanks, jacob.
  11. if your talking about the tierod ball joint just hammer right off to the side of the ball joint, on the tie rod. You could also put a nut on the balljoint and make sure it is more than 3/4s of the way on and hammer on that directly on the ball joint.
  12. here it is now alot worse looking than it was but getting it off the trailer messed it up. So i know that im gonna need a new cv shaft and bottom ball joint, fender, wheel, tie rod end, and the hub part that connects to the brake rotor. Im pretty sure i dont have to get a new knuckle because can't i replace the bottom ball joint, the one thats broken in the picture. Let me know what you think ill need and if anyone has any of these parts. Thanks Jacob.
  13. Yeah well the story behind it is i bought it for 100$ with the clutch out and brakes and the exaust was shot so i spent 200 on brakes and a clutch made an exaust out of my buddys old exaust. So i was rushing cuz i wanted to drive it and only tightened down the lug nuts with the wrench when the car was still up in the air, and the tires wernt touching the ground. I pulled it into the garage to weld up the rest of the exaust and was so excited by the way it sounded i drove it and forgot to crank them. So yeah thats the story behind it but i got it home today and the bolt connecting the knuckle to the a arm was broken. Ill get pics of it tomorrow when i have it all jacked up. So do you think all i need to get for parts is a new knuckle and cv and tie rod end?
  14. so i was driving to school today and my drives side tire fell off going about 25 mph. The tire and wheel are trashed so i put on my spare and drove 15 miles back home not going over 50, 3 miles from home i hear and feel a clunk then the drivers side tire locks up at 45 and i put on the brakes and make it to the side of the road safely. The tire is pushed back into the fender the strut is at an angle like this \. I havent had a chance to look it over yet but im thinking when the tire fell off it landed on the bolt/nut that holds the knuckle onto the bottom of the a arm. And it weakened it severly causing to it to break which would let the knuckle go off of the a arm and sending everything back into the fender. Or the trailing arm that goes to the a arm is bent and same with the a arm. So I am wondering if this has happened to anyone before and what you had to do to fix it . And if the strut is going to be ok to use, is the mouting area for the strut going to need to be sectioned out of anthor car and welded in to fix this. I know there isnt much info on this yet but i need to get a head start so i cna get this fixed. Any help would be great, ill probally have pics up tomorrow.
  15. thanks for the help everyone got them in with regular pliers and got it in the garage now getting ready to weld the rest of the exaust i cant wait to go drive it. thanks again jacob.
  16. i have an 84 gl 4x4 and I went to put new pads in and i cant get the piston for the caliper to go back in so i can fit in the new pads. Any help would be great thanks, jacob.
  17. Custom exaust doesnt have to cost you much money at all i got my firends old exaust of his 77 blazer and did some cutting and welding and it was all free. I havent completly finish it yet so i dont know how it sounds but it should be better than the old exaust that was wired on and cut right b4 the muffler. Some back pressure is a good thing other wise you will backfire alot. I had a tip right off the cat on my 85 4runner and it would set off car alarms but when egine breakinbg it would back fire alot. So i would suggest having a muffler to get that back pressure so it doesnt sound like ************ coming down the hill.
  18. i just did the clutch in my 84 and would say if you have some help and a good floor jack its not that hard to drop the tranny to do the clutch. The hardest part is just getting it back in. But i did manage to do it with the worst floor jack, a couple blocks of wood, some rope and 1 other persons help. It just seems like a waste to take out the motor to do the clutch. My two cents.
  19. thanksfor your help guys i got it out using the grease way that i tried before but i didnt have a tight enough fit. Some good old duct tape helped me out there. hanks again jacob
  20. im replacing the clutch on my 84 gl and cant get the pilot bearing out and was wondering how you guys did it. or if it is really that important to replace. thanks jacob
  21. I started changing my clutch on my 84 gl and have a couple ?s about the cv shafts. One of the boots is ripped in half and the other doent fit sung agaisnt the shaft, with about 1/2 inch gap. I was wondering if it is extremely bad to drive it like this for a couple months till i get the money to put new shafts in? Also i have the tranny all ready to come out, and was wondering if i should drain the fluid? Also do i need to pull it all the way out, or just slide it back a bit? thanks jacob.
  22. Any auto parts store should have them, advance auto parts has them starting at like 75$.
