The noise doesn't change with brake application. It doesn't change with hard right turns (loading up the left rear wheel). It sounds like a tire that is cupped but like I said we rotated the tires and then just replaced them all. I can sit in the back left seat and put my ear to the door pillar and when we turn, brake, speed up, slow down (with and without brakes) the noise is still there. After 25 years of working on cars I got out of the business and I will have to put this on 4 jack stands and crawl under the car to check this out. So any help in which direction to go is GREATLY appreciated

Our 2005 legacy non turbo has a VERY annoying left rear road noise. Believe it or not it has over 80k on it. When you drive at any speed it has a road noise that is very distinctive when I sit in the left rear seat. At first we thought it was tires and we replaced all four. It doesnt matter if you load the rear wheels on turns or if you are driving straight down the road, so that eliminates the bearing. Any problems with axles or rear diffs? Thanks for your time in this matter.

Thanks guys, but I'm still lost. I need to know in VERY lay mans terms...what oil (syn) to use. My car was bought new and I have changed my dif and trans fluid 2x now. I want to get all the fluids switched at the same time, so I can make just 1 trip to the service center. Can you really dumb it down for me? Please...thanks! -

You guys are the best! I drive almost ALL highway so that's where the majority of my miles come from! If I go to a regular shop, will they have a decent synthetic or should I bring my own? So I change it over, then wait 7500 and then change it again and go to 15K is that what everyone is saying? I wasn't aware of changing the other fluids to synthetic, should I do that too? -

Thanks for the link...it was like a foreign language reading it though. I drive about 2K per month sometimes more. I usually go to 3500-4k miles before my oil change, but I really wanna maintain my engine for a long long life and really hate getting oil changes so frequently. Suggestions -
Thanks again for the advice and the chuckles... I've got 65K on my 05 Subaru....so I was wondering when things were gonna start breaking I always heard about the reliability of a well maintained subaru and I am doing my share to make mine run forever With your guys help I'll be able to do that! Thanks again!

You all are great here, I have another question (yeah I know you are surprised) I have a 2005 Legacy 2.5 (I previously owned a Saturn 300 SL, V6), after about 115K miles on my Saturn, I had to have my ENTIRE rack and pinion steering replaced because of some fluid (I can't remember for the life of me what exactly, perhaps power steering fluid) wasn't flushed on a regular basis. I've been driving over 20 years and never did that to any car I owned before and that was the 1st time I had heard about this. My question is do I need to do this with my Subaru?? I plan on keeping this car until the wheels fall off or until my now 10 year old daughter gets to drive it so I want to make sure I am doing everything right. Thanks again!! You guys/gals are the bestest!

I have 63K miles on my 05 Legacy...I can't find in my book where it talks about replacing the timing belt. Anyone have any information? I swear every time I go for service it seems like I need SOMETHING...can't just get away with an oil change. Also, they tried to sell me a fuel system cleaner yesterday for $109....is it worth it? They said it would improve gas mileage. Thanks for a reply, you all have been very helpful in the past and I appreciate it! Happy Monday!

Well ya won't believe it....this morning when the display was showing the ILL thingy I adjusted the dimmer and yup...the ILL said ILL.1, ILL.2 up to ILL.6...so I guess you were right it has something to do with the illumination display but what is still puzzling to me is that it switches by itself off and on but it DID change when I adjusted the dimmer.....thanks so much to the poster for pointing that out to me...I can't believe that the DEALER of all people didn't know what it meant...do you still think it's a problem that it goes back and forth between the ILL and trip odometer? Nipper -- I really don't feel like contacting Subaru, the area rep or whoever, it is so damn frustrating and I always feel like I get the runaround and they are gonna screw ya outta money before they admit the error was on their end....I hate dealing with dealerships....I haven't even told you about the 3 yes THREE radios I had installed in my NEW car....this is my 1st Subaru, bought it on a friend recommendation....I do like the car but it's got some quirks but then again all cars do....but ya know I drive a bunch of miles a year so I wanted a car that will LAST...

Thanks so much for taking the time to look this up, when I looked I found nothing! I don't ever adjust the brightness or anything, so I don't think that is it, it just does it while driving, sometimes while idle. My Subaru dealer SUCKS rocks big time, I didn't even buy the car where I get it serviced because they were so ************ty to me when I tried to buy the car, it was like they couldn't be bothered with me...but where I bought it is like 90 miles 1 way so I serviced at the dealer closer to my home. These are the same folks that keep trying to sell me a RECTANBLE air filter (because that's what the book says) when it's CLEARLY a SQUARE filter....they are such idiots, I hate to even talk to them! There really isn't another Subaru dealer to go to either and I talked to them early on when I got the car about this issue and I know they will make a MOUNTAIN outta this issue and not help me, I can just feel it. I'll get the "it's not under warranty" or "we haven't seen this before" or " we can't make it do the problem again"...crapola! It's so frustrating!

Thanks Jess...My maintenance is ALWAYS up to date....and there's been no warning lights and as far as I know there is no security system malfunction. I HATE HATE HATE going back to the dealer, it's out of warranty now and I don't get a rental and I just know it's gonna be the same old story..."we can't find anything wrong" or "it doesn't do what you describe"

For some reason (mostly when VERY cold), my trip odometer will say ILL.4 (or some random number)...and then it will revert back to whatever the real trip odometer reading is...I can only get it to do it when it's very cold out and the dealer tells me there is nothing wrong because of course it doesn't do it while it's in the shop. Any suggestions or ideas? Thanks!
