  1. I just replaced the same thing 3 days ago. The 2 bottom tabs where gone and the thing was completly rusted out though the only reason I wasnt getting heat was the arm that goes to it from the control switch had come off. When it did finaly open it puked coolant all over my feet. I got a replacement valve from the u-pull-it here for $5. So if youve got a scrap yard near ya Id try there first. Unless you think its repairable.
  2. Its non turbo 82 wagon. If they are there for air fuel mix then that might explain a few things, ie. rich gas smell/smoke in exhaust, and a bit of a gas smell in oil. Ill see if I can find a replacement and let you guys know how it goes.
  3. What is it and is it important? I was going through my fuses and found a missing fuse for ECM. So I put a 5amp fuse in turned the key to start and heard a loud fast ticking. Looked under the hood and these solenoid deals are making the noise. Is this normal? Should I replace them? Should I just pull the fuse back out and say screw it?:-\ Perhaps part of the prob ive been posting about.?.?
  4. If your pricing a head gasket kit for an ea81 check out Schucks online. I am thinking about doing it soon so priced one at $73 for Fel-Pro full kit for doing head gaskets, valves, intake, exaust all that jazz. For 82 5speed Fwd. Unless Ive got the wrong deal that sounds a hell of alot better.
  5. I think someone already said it but Sales tax vs. state tax and a bit higher property tax. Also,if its still in effect, there is a multnomah county tax that takes 1% of your yearly income (out of pocket of course) if you live and work in the portland area. As far as seattle I had read somewhere that it was rated 2nd highest in living cost (though that was sometime ago that I read that) I used to have a nice house in SE portland near Woodstock that went for $675 2bd and a large baesment. So really it just depends on where you live. Oregon came out a bit ago and said that the job market is the best its been in a while and if they ever do it they are talking about city wide Wi-fi as well as running the max into vancouver. We will see though. Bellingham Isnt to bad of a place to live with good schools though the job market may not be that great and it is a college town. Though rent isnt bad in the right areas and there is very nice scenery. Just my 2cents Hope you make it back though there is nothing like the north west.
  6. Hey there and welcome. Vancouver/portland here. Dont head out due to only having 2wd but hope to pick up a 4wd drive some day soon.
  7. Is this a normal stock Alt issue? I noticed that with my heater on 3-4 it drops below 12v then if my blinker goes on it will drop to nearly 8-10v and really stuggle to blink at all. Id hate to think what would happen if I through windshield wipers and a radio in the mix. Or mabey my alt is going bad? -Afterthought- I called the dealer today to look into a new alt. They dont stock OEM (all rebuilt) and they are $150 with a $2 core. Kinda thought that was ridiculous.:-\
  8. Yeah, I may be a little over excited about getting everything up and running as best I can.Though its a nice size smoke screen on cold starts so it kinda has me worried. Either way with the compression being where it is and it being an older engins I think when I get some time and money im going to reseal the heads, valves and intake just to be safe. [quote name= }When I burnt my heater core I got the same symptoms: Lost coolant' date=' Coolant smell, Foggy windows. Do you happen to get fog on your windows? Try to bypass the heater. If you stop loosing coolant that's the problem[/quote] I just pulled into my place and sence its was hot thought id look under the dash, pulled the gaurd that covers the driver side of the heater core where the lines come in through firewall and found that the rod that conects to the heat control valve was off. Put it back in and turned dial to hot and coolant started shooting out of the rod on the heat control valve deal. Anyone had this problem and is there an easy fix with out having to pull the core? Sorry bout the lack of tech terms. Hope you cant desipher my lamens terms.
  9. Ok so today I did a compression test and am now more confused then before. Here are the numbers #1- 135 #2- 122 #3- 122 #4- 125 Thing is on all the cylinders first stroke it starts at about 70-80 then 2nd it hits 90-100 3rd it hits the peak. Is that normal? As well I saw no coolant in the combustion chambers. Though on start up if I rev engine to high rpms I get a black spot on the ground, white-ish smoke and a sputter of liquid, though the exhaust doesnt smell like burnt gas or coolant, just strong exhaust smell. Gah! Wish this was more simple. I did talk to someone at Richierich's shop who said it might be gas spilling into the wrong chamber on the carb. Anyone ever had this problem? I know I keep posting about the same thing, but I just cant figure it out and each time I try something it leads to other ideas. So thanks to all who have the patience to read through and give this some thought.
  10. I havent noticed any dampness on floors (it was a thought so Id been checking) is it possible it would just be pooling up somewhere in the heater core casing? And if the head was cracked wouldnt that affect the temp? Like I said its not getting up past the 1/2 way mark if it gets there at all.
  11. 82 ea81 carbed wagon 5 speed Ive posted about possibly bad rings before, but am now thinking that they may not be the problem after going through the threads on cooling problems. So heres my deal. Got this car not to long ago and it blows abit of smoke on warm(aibit is an understatement) up though i dont smell coolant it seems more like oil or gas burning off. As well, not sure if this is normal or not, I can smell a bit of gas in the oil and today right after parking with the engine still warm I opened the oil cap and found some smoke in the tube and while doing a tune up I noticed a bit of oil on the #1 plug. This would all seem to point to bad rings however sence Ive had it for a bit longer now Ive noticed that about every 4-5 days I need to top off the radiator. As well I just fixed the blower motor today and noticed the smell of coolant when the heater is on and Im not getting much heat (the heat thing I think may be a blocked heater core, no leaks fortunatly). Yet the temp gauge never gets above the 1/2 mark. With all that said Im doing a compression test tomarrow to be sure its not the rings but was wondering if a bad intake/head gasket or crack would give me off readings on the test. And would the intake or head gaskets cause a bit of gas to get into the oil. There is no water in the oil as far as I can tell. Also Ive seen in the forums that people with bad PCV's have had some what simular problems. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
  12. Well I got about what I expected from that question. Just thought Id through the thought out and see what happend
  13. Ok, Ive got a bit of a tricky question for anyone that knows carbs well. Im pretty sure everyone has heard the 200mpg carb stories so Ill sart off by saying this is nothing like that. But I was wondering If anyone has been able to tune or mod a stock or after market carb to get higher mpg. Like 10-15mpg higher then the norm on an older subaru. As well if it is possable is there loss in proformance or over all power. Just a silly thought but it would be great to beat out the price at the pumps and mabey run alittle cleaner at the same time.
  14. Thanks for the help. Went and looked around abit and found a few picks and prices looks like around $15 for the puller and the puller just looks like a pitman or idler arm fork (I forget the exact name) so though cheap a hammer and pry bar sounds fine to me.
