  1. so my subaru, I have no clue why the engine rumbles/vibrates/shudders the way it does. It's almost as if the compresstion wasn't as it should be. but the compression is fine. motor mounts are new. that's my only issue with this thing, if anyone has any ideas i'd really appreciate it. if not....who wants it? rav
  2. what does red HEET do for emissions? Will that help at all?
  3. So after 50 hours in the garage dicking around with this junk rump roast subaru, finally finding my fatal problem.... It fails emissions. by a butt load. Where my CO2 should of been 1.5%, it was a whopping 8%. how the F do i fix this?? I need as many suggestions as you guys can give me. help please!! the cat converter was removed, could this be it?
  4. so you honestly think my 84gl hatchback ea81 has a computer somewhere??! how would I know? haha. sounds kind of crazy to me.
  5. well my car is carburated so I don't have a computer. As soon as I get an emissions sticker, I'll block off the EGRs and then see what happens. Maybe i'll see if blocking them off will produce more power before the fact, just to see.
  6. So we're pretty sure we've taken care of the soob. it runs a lot better now, and all we did was tanked the carburator body and base plate, also we changed the fuel pump, so that seemed to of taken care of it. It still doesn't run as smooth as we think it should, I think we need to check the compression on the cylinders. It doesn't run as strong and/or smooth as it should be. On a different note...We yanked out the AC, and everything AC realted, condensor and so forth. a lot more room to play around with. The break booster works perfectly, though we still don't have strong breaks. (yes the petal is solid). Might check the pads and so forth. Any hints on what to check with the breaks? It's been sittin for about 2 years since before we got it, so we're not sure what it might be. We still need to get an emissions sticker for it, and not sure how that's going to work because we gutted the cat converter, and blocked off a EGR valve (though we really aren't sure what they are for...anyone?) The car backfires now, but probably because the EGR valves are open and maybe blocking them will solve that? Take a look at the two subs, the pretty shiny one is mine, and the ugly rusty pile is my sisters. (and to think she had to pay for hers :-) Mine has been in the garage for the last week, I'm going to wax it up and polish my pretty aluminuim wheels, so then you can drool over your computer monitor. hah
  7. carbs are the reason I can't get my 84gl to work. stupid piece of gargabe!! really, I'm tired of it. I have a vacuum leak....but nowhere to be found.
  8. alright folks...on to the garage now.and jerry, i'm interested in that webber if it's any good. here's a useless photo....
  9. you need to get in there with some brasso and shine up that engine!!!
  10. The choke is stuck shut, or the air cleaner is plugged up. This is most likely the problem, check it out.
  11. don't know why that 2nd picture doesnt want to show up....
  12. No, actually we're smarter than that!! We've not started it since we took out the cat converter. we just got out of the garage just a few minutes ago, we replaced the oil pump, which was leaky, also the front main seal, and adjusted the valves. Oh, and we took out the AC too. So tomorrow we're going to put on the exaust and then we can test out the break booster!
  13. So here are some more pics. I'll be working on the soob some more tonight, going to replace that oil pump, put the exaust back on, put the radiator back on, and going to test out that booster. wish me luck!!! I ripped off the grill because i needed to get to the pump.
  14. So how much do these things go for? I happen to know someone who has one of these in grand junction Co. In fact, the owner is my step-dads father. Not sure if he is lookin to get rid of it, but it's probably not in the best of shape, but thought I should metion it anyway. kevlar
  15. my 84gl has the same problem with starting up. almost never starts on the first turn, and i have to sit on the throttle for a few minutes before I leave it alone and it'l hover at around 100-500rpm. I guess my question would be....would a "hotter" coil really make a difference?
  16. right, so the base plate gasket is in fine condition. nothing to worry about there. So you think I can get a webber and everything I need for around $100? because, that's not a bad deal. and that would probably take care of this garbage! and yeah, I'm all about getting a lift for this. I'm just worried that it might not pass emissions with a webber and no cat converter.
  17. base plate gasket? sure, i'll go check that here soon. Thanks.
  18. It's an 84gl 4wd hatchback. The back seat is all tore up on the top, and the dash is cracked from sitting in the sun for the last 5 years with no use. I'll get some pictures tomorrow if we manage to put this exaust back together. I could give ya some pics as it sits in the shop if you REALLY want. haha. Anyway, back to busines....I want to get a holley webber for it, but i'd really like to see if i can get this thing to work first. why dump $400 on a car that i can't fix? what if it's not a vacuum problem ? :-(
  19. well, the guy who GAVE me this car said he changed the coil not to long ago. It's got good spark, so I don't think thats an issue.
  20. alright, FYI we've cleaned the carb real well twice. Also, our fuel pumps have been changed as well. I can assure you that there are no vacuum leaks as far as I can tell from the engine, but i never even thought about the booster. is this a common enough problem that I can hope that thats it? I've got my radiator and my cat converter laying on the garage floor still and I need to put that crap back together before I can check that booster, but that's a fab idea thanks a lot. I still don't have an emissions sticker for my car, and I chiseled out my cat converter i hope it wont effect it too much. Do you honestly think I should put my altitude compensator back on if i can get this car running ok? kevlar
  21. So my soob is a pile. it runs like absolute poop, no midrange power, sometimes hitting the gas means the car dies, idles at 100 rpm, unless i sit on the accelerator for 5 minutes, and the breaks are not responsive at all. I don't know what to do. I've changed the plugs and wires, made sure there no vacuum leaks, over and over and over again. I tore out the altitute compensator, which helped a tiny bit, I just recently busted all my knuckles trying to take out my cat converter, ripped it open and it was clean. It has a new battery, a new coil, clean air filter. So what do I try next? i'm about to put in a new oil pump because this one sucks and I'm leaking. plus almost no oil pressure which i hear may be normal, but just to be safe. if anyone has anything I should try, please help me out. Thanks! I took out the radiator so that I can put my new pump in. Though I doubt the pics will help, at least it's something to look at. kevlar
  22. we have 2. One runs, and the other can move under it's own power, but hardly :-) I guess I have 1 and a half that runs, half of one that doesn't. Kevni
