  1. I would not do more than 2000 pounds period. And if the trailer does not have brakes, I would knock another 500 pounds off of that. Trying to stop is what could kill you. A panic stop at speed with that much weight is a scary thing. Its not worth the risk. IMHO John C.
  2. Last year I had a problem with a defective electrical connection on the fuse box of my 98 Legacy Postal. In the process of tracing the bad wire, the dealer used one of those electrical probes that pierces a small hole in the wire when checking connectivity. They found and fixed the problem but this past week I started having the same problem again plus other things started acting intermittant and then stopped altogether. I started tracing the wiring and found that in the center of the car under the radiator there is a wiring harness with a number of wires in it. Four of them were broken. Apparently this winter water got into the harness and made its way into each of the tiny holes poked into the wire by the technician. The wires then corroded - the copper turned green and then brown when it burned through. I suspect the corrosion took place so fast due to the fact that this area uses lots of salt on the roads in the winter and that this got to the wire. I talked to the Subaru dealer about it and he just shrugged and said that the normal way to troubleshoot and he never heard of anyone ever sealing up the holes poked in the wires. The reason for this posting is just to provide a warning to any of you that use the probe type continuity checkers. If the wire you are checking is down low on the car and subject to getting wet, be aware that water can get into the wire via capillary action and will destroy the wire in short order. I replaced the wires, taped them and coated them with a liquid rubber goo and everything appears fine now. I am wondering if anyone else has had this same experience? John C.
  3. Have you checked all the fuses- especially the one in the engine compartment. Do your hazard flashers work? The hazard flashers and the power antenna are on the same fuse on the 98 legacy - possibly the outback is the same. The first time my antenna stopped working, it was the fuse. The second time, it was the wire between the engine compartment fuse box and the kickpanel fuse box that had gone bad. John C.
  4. Well, since there doesn't appear to be any in-between connectors, guess I'll just run a new wire - and a couple extra, just in case - that was a good idea. It doesn't seem likely that a wire could get cut running inside a wiring harness, maybe it was just defective or had a thin spot or something. Anyway the bypass should cure the problem. Thaks for the help guys. John C.
  5. Cougar, That is exactly what I did. I pierced the wire about three inches from the connectors and checked the continuity from the fuse to the wire, and from one end of the wire to the other. I have a partial wiring diagram but not a full manual. The wiring diagram doesn't show any intermediary connectors but it also doesn't show how the wire gets from the kickpanel fuse box to the main fuse box either. If I can't figure it out I guess I will have to just clip the wires off at each end, figure a way to get the new wire from one place to the other and solder it to the connector. Not an elegant solution but I guess it will work. Thanks, John C.
  6. Hi, I have a 98 Legacy Postal and the Power antenna won't come up and the hazard switch doesn't work. Fuses are all good. I checked the wiring from the underhood fuse box to the side panel fusebox and it appears that the white wire from pin 5 connector f35 doesn't connect to pin 7 of connector F40 on the sidepanel fusebox. The connectors at both ends appear good but there is no connectivity on the wire as indicated by my ohmeter.. I ran a test wire jumper from the fuse under the hood to the connector at F35 and everything works with the jumper connected so the wire connection seems broken somewhere in between the two. I comes out of the fenders near each fuse box. Now the question. How does one fix this? where does the wire go to get between the two fuse panels? and how does it get routed in between? Is there some other connector hidden away somewhere that I missed? Thanks for any info. John C.
  7. Turn signals work fine- actually everything else works except the radio antenna and the hazard flashers. I didn't realize I was in the wrong forum. Is there a way to move this to the right one? john
  8. Hi, I just found this group - looks interesting. I have a 1998 Legacy Postal with right hand drive. The hazard flasher and the automatic antenna have stopped working. I checked all the fuses and they are good. This has happened before. Two years ago the same thing happened and the dealer charged me $265 to "solder a broken wire to the hazard switch" and it took three days to get the car back. Does anyone have a wiring diagram or could suggest an idea of where this defective connection could be. I would like to try and fix it myself if possible. $$$$ are kinda scarce if you know what I mean. John
