  1. Well I did an oil change today, only 3 quarts drained out, I suppose the rest leaked out of the front or rear main seals, and burnt on the exhaust as usual. But I was greeted by alot of what looked like yellow teflon shavings, and a few ant sized chunks of metal and a couple little spirals of metal shaving....... The damm car still runs strong though....? Where would I go about finding a good EJ22 for my ol' brighton? Ebay and the local junksyards are already being checked, but maybe a JDM import or some super secret stash is around that someone could point me to? I really appreciate any help, I love my lil subie and don't want it to die. Thanks guys, Ian
  2. Well guys I took it to my guys at Jifflyboob and handed them a quart of Lucas sythetic oil stabilizer, and had them fill the rest with standard 10w30 pennzoil.....I have to say my noise had dimished greatly once warmed up, and my mileage also went WAY up, I did 230 miles to PA. and got maybe 20MPG and post oilchange on the way home 230 miles i made about 28MPG.... she still smokes like a bitoch once parked after getting off the highway, but that is expected since the cat gets soaked by the slow oil leak.
  3. Thanks guys, I have to put it in for service sooner or later so I am adding all these items to the list....LOL the maintenance is gonna cost more than this car is worth....though I did a 500 mile round trip to PA. and back and averaged about 28 miles per gallon on the way home, as opposed to the 15 I get in the Lightning.....I guess the lil subie earns it's keep.
  4. lifters eh? that dont sound too fun, can i just leave them as is? the car performs fine the knocking noise sounds "larger" than valvetrain noise i like to think. either way when it goes in for a timing belt i will have them checked out. Also are there any good subie shops in the nyc area that you have heard of? thank for your continued diligent dessimation of knowledge it is greatly appreciated Ian
  5. It is always noisy, I'm changing the oil this weekend and will replace my Motorcraft synthetic blend 10w30 with some 10w40 oil and see if it helps.
  6. My EJ22 sounds like a a city bus......but it'll still smoke most new 4 cylinder cars on the road...... People in brand new civics and sentras look all confused when I leave em in the dust, well in oily smoke from my downpipe....LOL
  7. thanks nipper, now if there was only a way to quiet down this damm piston slap clanging racket this motor makes
  8. could it be the fuel pump, battery, injectors, or fuel filter? I need to throw 4 gallons of xylene and 8 ounces of marvel mystery oil in the tank to do a real good 100 octane injector cleaning....I feel like my injectors may be a bit gummed up from years of soccer mom neglect by the previous owner.
  9. Hey sorry for raising the dead but forgot to update you guys, the fluid fixed the problem with the tranny, just did the knock sensor tonight, wasnt cracked but has rust on the bottom.
  10. Ok I changed the knock sensor on my 98 brighton EJ22, the old one had the white connector and was not cracked at all but did have some rust on the bottom, should I worry about my check engine light coming back, since I have some buzzing coming from a cat sheild. Thanks guys, Ian
  11. Yeah I need a good shop as well for a timing belt, pump, and main seals. I remember someone saying something about a place in NJ near philly? if theres a good guy in norther NJ or CT I'd love to know as well. Thanks Ian
  12. just did a drain and fill on my 98 legacy....5 qts. of catrol dexron merconIII most of my grumbling in turns is gone now.....WOW my old fluid was BOSCO....it is now strawberry quick
  13. Nipper dont forget your teflon muffler wax.... BTW i dont think i have a spin on filter on my 98 legacy brighton built in nov 1997....also what size socket for the trans pan drain plug? Thanks
  14. i put the fuse in for FWD and the grumbling went away.......ill change out the tranny fluid and see if it helps......how much is the fix for this if fluid doesnt work
  15. thanks for the info i will try out the fwd fuse tonight or tomorrow.......it was too nice out last night so i had to take the lightning out to a cruise night....Nipper what about a good reasonable mechanic in the area? and i know how it works with cars FAST, RELIABLE, CHEAP.......pick two
  16. Hey i am on enough forums to know when i see one of the "brains" in a forum.....I am in the bronx and just acquired a 1998 leg brighton 2.2 AT with 138,000 miles on the odo....it needs some help...you may have seen a few of my other posts. 1) I changed the plugs (ngk laser plat) wires...generic, also the fuel filter, air filter, pcv and its hose, both accesorie drive belts, and some chevron fuel cleaner in the tank......this thing runs STRONG now.....but the previous owner understated the oil leakage problem, and also FINALLY told me she never did the timing belt change...NOT ONCE...LOL 2) I sprayed the bottom of the motor and cats while i was doing an oil change and then took the car to the pressure washer and sprayed underneath.......i drove about 15 minutes home and got a flashlight under there.....i saw the oil on the bottom of the front timing cover AND ontop of the cat below what i assume the rear oil seal area. 3) when making sharp turns i notice a bit of chatter from the diffs....i had this chatter in the rear of my f-150 when the tractionlock diff was going on me.... So.....I would love, at least a reccomendation for a good subie mechanic in long island or the nyc area....OR if you do this work for a living I would love to give a good forum guy the business. Thank you, Ian "pitstain" schwartz this thing i get but the legacy is somehow intimidating me
  17. if you dont mind me asking what did it cost for the work minus the machining done to your valves and whatnot? and how much the parts were...thank you
  18. forgot to mention I changed the blinker fluid with some amsoil brand when I did the headlight bulbs......also put some blocks of dry ice in the airbox for a true cold air intake... LOL
  19. i was thinkin of that....WILL DO.....time for the pressure washer i guess...LOL
  20. ok guys the bottom of my oil pan and the cats and lower front crossmember are SOAKED WITH OIL...... FYI build date oct-97 I dont really see any oil anywhere else.....and it barley looses a quart in 3000 miles.....please help..... Hopefully your solutions will include me putting some gasket sealer here or there as i really dont want to drop alot of loot on this car. I already did acesory belts (both), ngk laser plat. plugs, wires, pcv, fuel filter, air filter, silverstar bulbs, new wipers, and synthetic air in the tires. thanks alot peoples i appreciate any help
  21. it is a 98 brighton according to subaru customer service it was built october 1997.....I don't know where it was built. ok so I did the fuel filter, pcv valve, air filter, and am putting in new ngk laser patniums tonight, the engine makes a bit of a clanging deisel sound or two stroking noise though........
  22. thanks for the info......whats the best place to buy new calipers if i wanted to.......subaru told me my leg was built in oct of 1997 thanks again
