  1. In my opinion oil additives are a waste of money. There is a reason why porsches, Corvettes, BMW's, and other high end vehicles come from the factory with MOBIL1. Synthetic oil is superior to regular oil. My RX came with every single reciept from every oil change. It always had regular oil. When I filled it with synthetic, it ran smoother and seemed to rev faster. I would find it hard to believe that someones car did not run as good with synthetic oil as it did with regular. I preach MOBIL1 and always will. Every car I have ever owned has seemed to run better with synthetic oil. If oil additives were all that they are advertised to be then they would come in cars from the factory and be recommended by the manufacturer. Synthetic oil will do anything for your engine that regular oil combined with additives will.
  2. sumitomo htr-200 CHEAP at tire rack, awesome tire. I have been running mine in the recent snowstorm and didn't even begin to get stuck. Also, once summer rolls around, you'll thank yourself. These tires made my subaru.
  3. I have 3 amps in my rx. I mounted a smaller alpine 3545 in the glovebox. I have a PPI 2075m mounted under the drivers seat and a kicker x50 under the passenger seat. I have not had any problems with my amps overheating, the amount of heat an amp makes depends on the load that is place upon it. An amp running at 4ohms will produce less heat than an amp running a 1ohm load because it is not being worked as hard. All my amps are old enough to match my car, they are all pieces that could have been acquired when the car was new. I did have two newer kenwood amps in the back compartment where the jack handle is stored and they would get extremely hot. Once I moved up to my current setup and mounted them underneath the seats I have not had any problems. My ea82 has floor vents underneath the seats, If you have amps under there that are overheating try turning on your floor vents with cool air. I would think that an amplifier that did not have a huge load on it would be fine under the seat, I have driven four hours with mine playing at high volumes and have never experienced an overheat problem. This may not work as well for you, but it is a good place to put them if you want them out of the way.
  4. http://www.ricecop.com lots of information on the definition of "ricer"
  5. What would a bone stock 88 rx run in the 1/4 mile? I can't seem to find any performance data or road tests showing the capabilities of a stock car. Just wondering, even an educated guesstimate would be helpful.
  6. so if I jumper the thermoswitch plug it will be switched off of the ignition? I want to make sure that the fan won't continue to run with the key in the off position.
  7. would removing my ac belt cause my electric fan to stop working? I know the fan is controlled by a thermoswitch but I believe that it also automatically comes on with the ac on. It is not working at all, the only thing I have done is removed the ac belt. Is my fan not working because of removing the belt or did my thermoswitch go bad? just curious what I need to buy.
  8. anybody going to the scca national runoffs in topeka kansas? If not, you should. It's gonna be sick.
  9. hey beataru, not to bash, but a 928 gts is a front engine water cooled v8...911's, 912's, and 356's were rear engine water cooled, they are the real porsches. I would agree that porsche brakes would be ridiculously cool on a subaru. I do undercarriage details on 993's and the brakes are gigantic.
  10. dude relocate your charcoal canister so that you can get that air filter right behind the headlight. Take the light out at the track and you get lots of fresh air. I don't know how much of a difference this made on my car but you might get a serious performance gain with fresh outside air compared to the hot air in your engine compartment. Check out my picture, I just moved the canister bracket to the other side. Plus, if you take out the light people look in there and all they see is the filter...might strike fear into the hearts of civic and miata drivers at the autocross.
  11. I have a friend with a super 16g that he was using on his corvair...looks like overkill. It would seem to me that turning up the boost could seriously damage my engine. From some of the posts on this forum everyone that turns it up eventually has problems. This is my daily driver and I deliver pizzas in it, if it breaks I'm stuck driving an MGB every day. Anyone who thinks an ea82t is problematic should battle with some old british cars. I once saw a t-shirt that said "If LUCAS made guns, there would be no war". I don't want to break the subaru, but as soon as I have something different to daily drive, it will be big turbo/big boost time. No BS...It will happen.
  12. I already have my hoses and everything made to fit, I set mine up so that the in/out of the IC points toward the front of the car. This way the hoses are shorter which helps with turbo lag. Also, my intercooler has metal end pieces, no plastic.
  13. I forgot to mention that I got this car for free. The catalytic converters were clogged and the previous owner bought a new car. Apparently he was going to have to pay to get it towed away from where it finally died on him and didn't want to spend the money to fix it, so he said I could just have it. I buffed it for like 2 days and went from a finish like a piece of paper to a very nice gloss, gutted the cats, and I've been driving it since. I put on 2wd front shocks, 195/60 13 sumitomo htr-200, msd blaster 2 coil, and all of the stereo stuff. I wouldn't have known to do most of the things I've done without all of the information on this forum, thanks to all of you guys.
  14. If you move your charcoal canister to the other side you can relocate the air filter right behind the headlight. take the headlight out at the track and get lots of fresh, cool air. I also have a Saab 900 intercooler setup with a cooling fan from a GSX-r750 motorcycle on it but I need to fashion up some brackets to hold it all in place.
  15. You might try to lower your front tire pressure slightly to prevent understeer, Take everything that you can out of your car, less weight is better. Also, if an autocross is set up right, straight line speed shouldn't make too much of a difference. At our autocrosses the miatas sometimes post FTD and almost always beat cars that are much faster in a straight line. A smooth line is the key, not power.
  16. I know what you are saying, but I'll rephrase my question. between the turbo and the intercooler the car should have 7psi. after the intercooler the pressure drops, meaning the throttle body actually sees around 5psi. . If the hose that sends signal to the wastegate, which you would call the input line, was connected between the intercooler and the throttle body instead of between the turbo and the intercooler, the car would have 7psi after the intercooler instead of before it. Would moving this hoes to get its signal between the intercooler and throttle body make me go faster, or would my car run exactly the same?
  17. I just installed a saab 900 intercooler into my 88rx. I noticed that the wastegate hoses run to the turbo housing. The wastegate will still open at 7psi, but wouldn't the engine get less boost since the intercooler takes some of it away? Would I be better off to route the wastegate hose after my intercooler? it would seem to me that if this was done the turbo might have to work a little harder but the engine would still end up with 7 psi of boost after the intercooler. Is this correct, or is the pressure equal throughout the whole system?
  18. If you relocate the charcoal canister to the other side of the metal that the bracket is bolted to you can twist the maf boot so that the filter will sit directly behind the headlight. Worked great with a hotwire style, don't know about the larger flapper style. My filter adapter was a nissan part but it came with a piece that could go on with it that had a square hole, I would think that it would work with either kind of maf. I think it would get much cooler air near the headlight than off to the side.
  19. Anyone who is using an adapter to connect a cone filter to a hotwire MAF should give this a shot. Move the air canister bracket to the other side of the metal that it is attached to. You can just flip it and use one of the existing boltholes to hold it in place. If you do this, you can twist your filter around and barely make it fit in the area directly behind the headlight where the air canister was before. Mine is a super tight fit, but it was a tight fit when I had it in place of the factory airbox as well. It probably depends on the size of your filter. I would think that this would give you colder air because it is closer to the front of the engine compartment. On race day you could remove the headlight and it would be almost like ram air...maybe even use an extra headlight bracket to make a cool duct for it.
  20. I had a hose that I pulled loose when I was changing the thermostat. It was underneath a plastic cover directly to the right of the thermostat. Didn't see it until I removed the turbo pipe
