  1. Time to do the front brakes on my Impreza. Do you guys have any recommendations on suppliers/brands, etc? I need to replace the pads and rotors on both sides, and the caliper on the right front, and I don't know anything about the different brands that are available, so I don't know which are quality parts and which are junk. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!
  2. Is there a procedure to actually flush the coolant yourself, or do you just drain it and refill? Also what do you do with the old antifreeze? Do parts stores take it back?
  3. My first Legacy also had a Power button on the shifter. Anyone know what that was about? I was always hoping it would be something like an afterburner, but alas, when I pressed it I did not start going mach 1.
  4. I thought they already had a cool air intake? There's a donkywongle that goes from behind the right front headlight into the air filter. Isn't that it?
  5. The entire gate (including the wiper assy, stop light, glass, both spoilers, and struts and everything else) was $225. He originally quoted me $175 for the glass and $200 for the gate, but when I told him I wanted a gate with both spoilers he changed his mind to $225. The top spoiler is bolted to two straps that wrap around the glass, which are bolted to the sheet metal.
  6. The scrap yard had a gate for an '01 that had both spoilers. Maybe next week I'll get a chance to paint it the same color as the rest of the car. The gate itself was incredibly easy to install, it was the trim that gave me fits. God, what an unbelievable pain!
  7. Well, the struts were for Foresters, which are all wagons, so I'm not sure if that would be the case. I'd expect struts and springs for wagons to be a little taller and a little stiffer than those for a sedan.
  8. '98 Impreza wagon... Last year I replaced the struts with those spec'd for a Forester in hopes of raising my Impreza. It worked great in front, to the tune of about 4 or 5 inches from where it was. The back end only came up a couple of inches. I put Forester springs in the back after that, and there wasn't much change. Do any of you have some ideas why this might be? The struts were a set of KYB struts I bought from an ebay seller. The appeared to be in a bundle directly from factory, so I don't think it's a mismatched set.
  9. I'm actually be more worried about bypassing the clutch, but I'd like to at least see if the system is working. If I step on the clutch pedal while the CC is on, there will be no load and the engine will rev up. If I step on the brake, then the CC will simply fight the braking action until I remember to turn it off.
  10. I think the missing pieces in my cruise control (98 Impreza) are just the switches on the clutch and brake pedals. Can I bypass these just by shorting out the contacts? The connector for the brake pedal has 4 pins. Does anyone know which pins are for the cruise control?
  11. Can anyone tell me what model years/trim levels of the outback sport had both spoilers on the gate?
  12. I was searching for another thread I made and found this one. I figured that after driving with the Nokian WRs for a year and putting about 15,000 miles on them, I'd post a review. I couldn't be happier with these tires. I've become a lot more cautious when driving in the snow and tend to go a lot slower, so I'm sure I'm not pushing these tires to the limit, but they did provide excellent control and traction whenever I needed them. I'm particularly impressed with the way they handle on wet roads. A buddy of mine who has always been into performance cars was riding with me on what we call in NY a parkway (goes through the hills, lots of twists and turns, 2 lanes each way but NO shoulder and a big curb along most of it), and he kept commenting about how he was expecting it to slip sideways around the turns with bumps in them, but it just kept its grip. I know a guy whose family owns a Subaru dealership, and he told me that they started using Bridgestone Firehawk tires because they felt they offered the same performance for about 3/4 the price.
  13. They were indeed looking at compatibility guide and said the gates were different. So is it true that any lift gate from 93-2000 will fit, including the Outback Sport models?
  14. I have a '98 Impreza L hatchback, and some jerk smashed my rear window last week. All the glass places tell me that the glass is no longer made in the aftermarket, so I'd have to buy OEM glass, which is very expensive. The cheapest I could find was $325, but it would have to be shipped, and then I still have to pay for installation. A junk yard said they have the glass, and it would cost $175 (which is, btw, more than new aftermarket glass was when it was available). They also said I can have the whole gate for $200. What I need help with is the compatibility of different models and gates. They have two that are from the Outback Sport models, but said they were incompatible. Is it the same gate just with the spoilers? I kinda want the spoilers Can anyone tell me what years are compatible? Here's my thinking: If I buy the used glass, I'll have to pay a glass guy to install it, and the total cost will be about $275-300. If I buy the gate, I'll have to paint it ($50?) and get a buddy to help install it, and maybe rent a truck to go pick it up. (It won't fit inside the car, will it?) Total cost: about $250. It's more of a pain in the rump roast, though, but I'll get the Outback style spoilers. What do you guys think?
  15. I guess that's a good point. The car has 116,000 miles, and the engine has around 75,000 miles and the receipt from the engine work says that it was replaced. I'll probably wait until the end of the summer to do all that work so the parts bill doesn't feel like it hurts so much :-)
  16. Well... Turns out that the electrode was broken off the #1 spark plug, so no wonder it was misfiring. I'm not at all happy about that. The #1 and #2 plugs also looked like they'd been running rich, while the #3 and #4 looked fine. Oh, and the reason why I though my spark plug socket didn't fit was because I could turn it without any resistance. It turns out that the plug wasn't seated snugly, which is making me suspect the other work that was done on this engine before I bought it.
  17. Whoops, I was reading wrong. So the ignition coil measures within spec. Btw, the timing belt was changed about 30,000 miles ago
  18. P0141 - Bad 02 Sensor P0301 - misfiring on cylinder 1 P0440 - something in the evaporative emissions system. That last one has been there for a while and comes and goes, so I haven't worried about it. I measured the resistances of the ignition coil, and the primary side pins measure less than 1 ohm, while the secondary side measures on the high side of spec, about 13.5K. So, we start with a new ignition coil. I was going to pull the #1 plug to inspect it, but my spark plug socket didn't fit. Should be 5/8", right?
  19. Thanks for the input, guys. I'l check the codes and take the meter to the ignition coil tomorrow.
  20. I have a 98 Impreza 2.2L. It's been running real rough when accelerating, and tonight I got a blinking check engine light, indicating a misfire. This just starting happening last week, when the weather has been warm. I don't know if it's coincidental, but I changed the oil and filter a couple of weeks ago, using Castrol Syntec 5W-30. Is it possible that there's a problem with the oil that's causing the problem? What are the other likely culprits?
  21. Well, I decided to jump on the WR G2s. A local shop had them and installed them for $125 a piece. Not too bad, I think. They are quieter than the Dunlops that were on there when I bought the car.
  22. It's time to replace the tires on my 98 Impreza. I don't live in an area that gets enough snow to warrant buying dedicated snows for the winter, so I need a good all-season tire. Of particular concern is driving on wet & slick roads, and I don't want to slide. Ever. I also want good handling on dry surfaces. I've read lots of good stuff about the Nokian WRs and one review saying that they were a little wiggly on dry roads. So, do you folks think there's a reason not to buy them? Tires-easy.com has them for $107 each plus about $45 for shipping for the set.
