  1. hey all, my Girfriends power steering pump is sounding like a fords power steering pump. wining and such when you move the wheel. she is driving a toyota tercel 95. I looked at the resevoir and the oil was full of air bubbles. is this an issue of over filling? I though perhaps it was low but it doesn't seem to be. if the pump is going does it start to make noise and is that a diffinite diagonsis. I was thinking of just replacing the oil to be sure that wasn't the issue. it looked old. any other ideas? thanks just so youknow I drive 87 gl 4wd and I am proud!
  2. great ideas thanks for the continuing info and ideas. I think I will add it too the fuel and vaccuum together and then put some in the oil and drive for a few hours to clear everything else before an oil change.
  3. HI alll, My ea82 is a little sluggish and needs a good maintenance. I got a can of sea foam and I was thinking of adding some to: the oil, the fuel the master cylinder vacuum line into the engine how have you used sea foam and what where the results? Am I going over kill or not? what would you do in any particular order? vacuum, then oil and fuel for a tank before changing oil and the regular maintenance.
  4. I got two codes from my 87 gl SPFI d/r 4wd 5sp. with wiring harnesses in the engine bay ( which isn't were most are I understand) so I got the VSS vehichle Speed Sensor, what is it and would it change preformance? I also got the nuetral switch code, what is that and also what is its relivance?
  5. alright, water pump it is sounds like. as for the pulley in the car. i replace the timing belts when in the car should I be concerned that I didn't get the bolt tight enough? also I am wondering if anyone thinks the fan is not the issue but that some other bearing is what is making the high pitched noise? what could it be? water pump, alternator? power steering pump? perhaps?
  6. I bougt a set of two tires yesterday at the yard mainly for the rims but the tires were in good shape they are 175/70 and my other set is 185/70. I am wondering what difference that really makes except lowering my front end a little and bad if I engage 4wd on any sort of hard road. Also it seems that the car is pulling to the right now more than it did. can tires do this? what is that all about? thanks nate
  7. Thanks for the ideas, It is fuel injected, I am thinking of getting some cold burning plugs to keep from knocking when she gets hot and running long hours. I can further advance the triming too if I do this. I just replaced the timing belts but not the tensioner or pulleys. it is easy once the covers are off. I could see coolant coming from the pump area when I was working there but I couldn't tell if it was leaking from the shaft or not. if it was does that mean the pump is shot or what? also the fan is really loud when I am running the car around 3000 rpm's I was thinking of doing an upgrade to remove the fan attached to the engine and install a second electric fan. Has anyone do this before and how did they wire this? It is high pitched whine, could it be something else like the alternator or something? anyways thanks for the help everyone, talk to you soon. -nate
  8. Hi I am planning on a road trip from California to BC canada this summer and I am thinking about getting the car up to snuff. I would like your suggestions. apart from oil, filter, plugs what would you change or at least carry with you. I haven't changed the waterpump, fuel pump, fuel filter since I have had the vehicle (10k and 9months). I was planning on road tires I have been losing some water but I can't tell where. it could be from the waterpump area but the pump doesn't show any signs of weakness. I was also thinking of some undercoating around the wheel wells to quiet her down a little. Lastly, the sound of the road cutts out the mid range of my music does anyone have ideas on combating this issue? thanks kindly, Nathan
  9. I saw a gl with Lemans steel belt tires anyone used that brand with success? they felt like they have really stong sidewalls. THanks for all the suggestions.
  10. Hi all, Anyone have suggestion for a good all season tire. I am taking off my snows. I put nexen on a previous car and really liked them. Any suggestion are well appreciated. -nate 87 gl d/r 5sp. Two all season on the back and snows on the front now.
  11. Hey all, I am looking at a legacy for a friend of mine, 1990 awd 205k. I know these motors have headgasket issues but when does that show up? anyone know? are there other things to look out for. what is their clearance and offroad capabilities replated to my 87 gl d/r? thanks
  12. well she runs! and well at that. I was a tooth to far advanced. I did manage to get the inner timebelt cover on and off with a far amount of trouble. (i never removed the waterpump pulley) I have a water leak though right around the water pump area. it drips off the timebelt cover about inline underneith the waterpump. do you guys think this would be the waterpump or some hosing that goes in and around it? thanks for the help all! -nate
  13. I got everything together but the timing marks on the drivers side I had to feel becuase the radiator was in the way. She ran but doesn't have any power. she sounds a but loud too so I am thinking the valves might be ahead by a notch. would it be that or just the distributor off. I imaged that because the distributor works off the drivers side camshaft if I line it up it should all be timed right. thanks for the ideas.
  14. I am working on the timebelt. the drives side belt was the one that went. I am having a hard time getting the inner timing belt cover off. it is hung up on the water pump pulley. I tried to take the fan off but I stripped one of the 4 10mm bolts. do I even have to take the fan off? or not. it looks like I should be able to get away without doing this but at the same time the waterpump pulley is getting in the way. I looked at the write up in the USRM which is good but makes it seem like everything should go just peachy. I was also wondering if I align the passenger camstright up and the 3 marks on the fly wheel if it is the middle of the 3 dashes or the left of right. or if it even matters all that much. thanks for the help as always it is really appreciated. and by hell or high water I will get the "beast" back in backroad ripping condition.
  15. I popped of the timing belt inspection port covers and low and behold I only felt one timing belt. The inspection ports are awesomly easy to use. so now I have to do my first subaru timing belt change. from the book it looks like I have to remove a lot of pulleys, is this hard to do. 1. the book suggests having a special tools to hold the crankpulley while tightening the bolt. is this necessary? any alternatives. 2. are you supposed to install passanger side belt first? 3. when installing you leave the slack on the tensioner side 4. now that one side is off is it hard to realign or are the marks pritty staightforward 5. lastly, do you need a flywheel stopper as the book has pictured, will it really move? thanks for all the help
  16. Is the ea81 noninterupt head? and do they break timing belts.
  17. Hi all, I was out on a drive this afternoon and without warning the old faithful died. I heard something like a soft pop or a release of somekind and she stalled. She is now not starting. My Thoughts: 1. time belt broke 2. double check that she is getting spark 3. the fuel pump was audible so perhaps she kicked it. 4. Check compression Other than that I am lost some history of the vehicle: 1. she was running really hot with a plugged radiator in the summer, since replaced 2. Gives a check engine light considently on harder acceleration past around 4000rpms and usually only when getting to highway speeds. usually not in 1st gear. Codes read were Neutral switch and Air Control. apart from that she is driving well and just drove from Vancouver canada to Northern California with ease. any other thoughts or perhaps ideas where to start looking. thanks
  18. Hey I am getting a 24 and 51 on my 87 spfi wagon. 24 is Air Control 51 is Neutral Switch I am wondering what the significance of the Neutral switch is with regards to operation of the vehicle. I don't know what Air Control is so if anyone wants to enlighten me that would be great. thanks kindly, Nathan Chase
  19. I haven't heard of OEM. I suppose this is a company just like NGK for example. Perhaps it is less common in Canada where I grew up.
  20. I am looking to do a little maintenance on the Sub. she is an 87 spfi N/A D/R with 230k on so far. California Car she is pinging when loaded with people and hot on acceleration. Due to this I was thinking of puting in cooler Plugs. I have NKGs right now. what is the appropriate gap? any suggests on oil and filter brands. synthetic or not. is that even important if I change oil regularly.
  21. Thanks for the help I did find it rather easily after posting. sry to have wasted your time. I am having a hard time finding either the connect or the LED for the Oxygen Monitor. I can't seem to find either. anyone help me? I have an 87 spfi I believe
