  1. I would like to start going over the car and getting it ready for fall/winter. It may sound early but everything costs money ya know.

Anyway I would like to hear from you guys what things you have done to your car that helps you in cold months. Permanent installs or just seasonal ones.

Also do you have problems with your rear defrost lines? I don't even have a rear window yet so it's a concern. Also every year my rear and quarter windows fog up beyond belief in my impreza. This year I would really like a kit to add defrost lines or buy one of those JCwhitney blowers (for my 82 GL). Is there a defrost line kit available? Does your heater keep all your windows defrosted/defogged? I really like to see when I am driving like an idiot in the snow ;)

Next I was interested in a heated washer fluid kit but @ 130 I will pass. Is there a cheap one? Or can I go buy some heater element that is sealed and drop it in with switch control?

Again heated wipers I think only run an element through the main metal so there won't b ice/snow build up. Is there anyone who is familar with heating elements to suggest an easy approach of building a DIY kit?

Also does tempature change air pressure?

Thanks again for any and all help!

  2. Ok I set up a caepress site earlier this eve and I wanted to make a few items in relation. However I just can't get it right so I was wondering if anyone on here could help design a simple sticker or two. Maybe Tshirts?

All profits made from the sticker could be donated to this site or I can just set it so everyone pays at cost. I just want the stickers made.

    My Sister's a Brat

    and/or

    My Brother's a Brat

Also is there a USMB sticker? If not would the board owners allow some to be made?

The graphic needs to be made in a 2100 height by 700 with template.

When I tried this in photo shop with max size font the font still showed to small. I could do it at a smaller size and increase but i just wasn't getting the right combination of font and colors. Anyway if you guys think these would be cool stickers and a good idea with the donations please post.

    hahaha thanks subeman!

I was thinking the other day I saw a TSD rally coming up.

I have only done like two of these back in Michigan and were kind of fun at least there. Since they used all backroads none which were speed marked but I imagine there still is some sort of law. However with TSD you never break 50-60 unless you get really backed up.

Well I figured if you guys want to go I can get details listed of the next closest one. YOuw ill need a navigator. depending on how many are interested some of us can team up with others on here that will need a navigator.

I will go find the detail now and post.

Oh and BTW I have yet to see any rallycross, do you guys know of any?

  5. Thanks for all the info.

The other day I saw some site selling adapters for the currenttrans to an EJ series motor. Has anyone dropped an EJ in an EA body as of yet? I assume the pipig would be an issue if I started to dream about a legacy turbo I think was out in 90-92 year range?

Is the size of a 2.5 much larger than a 2.2? Also Is the EA82 trans a better choice for a more powerful engine? Will the EA82 trans require a different drive shaft? I am guessing the trans from an EJ series is to large and would require a shortend drive shaft?

Now back to the 2.2 would it kill either trans EA81 or EA82? I am not sure the HP/Torq but guessing 120-130 range?

Also what is the weight of the EA81 hatch? I would imagine the hatch with a 2.2/2.5 would really pull.

EA82T would fit.... barely, you'll have to move the hill holder, and actually mating the engine up to the trans requires you first pull the distributor.... and doing any sort of real service would (pulling the valve cover, etc) would pretty much mean yanking the engine back out. Once it's in, there's only about 1/4" between the valve covers and the frame rail, and if the engine mounts are bad it will smack the frame every time you rev it.... exhaust would be interesting as the EA81 engine cross-member isn't curved right for the up and down pipes to the turbo, and the EA82 cross-member is too wide.

But the EA82T is a crap engine. They blow head gaskets if you look at them cross-eyed, crack heads, produce terrible power unless under boost, and even then it's only about 20 HP more than an NA EA82. With only a few mods, a built EA81 can match the EA82T in peak HP, and eclipse it in torque. Plus the added wireing complexity, and the turbo exhaust you would have to fab..... totally not worth the time or effort as it takes less of both to install an EJ22. You'll have a bulletproof engine, more simplified wireing, easier time with the exhuast, and 20 - 25 more HP without a turbo. It's a no-brainer really.

Dash will fit - any EA81 body car will fit. Should be the same dash you have tho, so unless it's really horribly cracked, and you are putting in a pristeen one, it's really not usually worth the 6-8 hours it takes to swap em (no joke on the 6-8 hours).

Recovered upolstery is a rip off unless you are restoreing it. Get some mazda protege seats - I hear they bolt in easy.

  6. I got look closer once it gets light out.

No I wasn't thinking anything fancy I was thinking of that cheap nylon like fabric that is ultra thin and always hangs down in early american cars. Maybe mine has the vynal missing.

Has the vynal ver had problems of coming apart from the foam? Assuming it is attached via adhesive?

    Thanks for the reply.

Foam? No there was never any fabric up there. There is cardboard, and then foam on top covered in vinyl.

Remember this isn't a luxury car. It's an econemy 4WD.

  7. Where are you gonna install the unit? I am getting one as well. I always think these would be good for group meets, group drives,TSD rallies, etc. I always hear people having them so I finally got one. My only problem is where to install it! I was debating on which car to put all the equipment in and I think I am going toward the GL at the moment since it will be the winter ride until its ready for ful time.

Anyway I will post some pics of it and maybe start another thread on where to install radio equipment. I was a trunkable scanner as well for entertainment value.

Also is there a subtle CB antenna? Mentions above was a cobra cellphone styled antenna, would you have a link to that product? The radio I have I believe is 12 Watts what is a good size antenna for that wattage?

nice.. I got a cb ready to go in but I dont have an antenna yet. As far as having a CB goes, if you're ever on logging roads its a must. My uncle is a log truck driver, and I can tell you from personal experiance log trucks dont slow down going around blind corners, they use CBs to communicate with other truckers so there are no collisions but if there is a little blazer sitting on the other side of the corner bombing around it going 40mph and a truck going 40mph the otherway... who has the bigger bumper? who is gonna go into the ditch? not the kenworth hauling 50tons.

CBs are good to have. The long wire/whip antennas are pretty durable and hard to bust if you have a good mount. Uncle has a 14' antenna like that on his toy, and that thing has been to hell and back many many times and it got bent up but never broken or busted.

  8. Now what about that in reverse using an EJ motor in an EA chasis?

Would love a legacy turbo 2.0 with this trans assuming the trans could be beefed up.

  9. I am curious how you guys have addressed your headliner issues? It looks as if there is none in my car only the foam. So I am guessing what was once there was that cloth on foam that sags?

If thats the case have you replaced the cloth or used dye on the foam?

Is there a really good adhesive?

    Thanks,

    John

  10. So how about I got a complete e82 turbo wagon or the like would this be the best way to do the swap? Would I still need to fab anything? Or would the donar car have everything?

For the dash I wanted was from a 84 GL Sedan. This would fit right?

As I am getting familar with all the years and parts available given a particular year I thin keverything I waant is from an 84 well I guess the turbo is any e82 turbo and I would do the trans as well. I figure I would keep it stock.

I was thinking on going after a grey interior which I knew 84 GL sedans had but I guess sedan door paels would not match so I think I will just try to source the damaged interior parts and stick with the same color. I have a tan plaid but the vynal seems to have dried than cracked real bad. Is this very common? Should I try to source old seats or just have them redone?

160k? That's pretty low on the EA81 spectrum.

Parts that fail? Surely you jest..... axles *maybe* but only because the rubber in the boots is old. Ball joint - again old rubber on the boots. The stock Hitachi (or perhaps carter/weber) carbs are some of the worst/most complex known to man... as luck would have it they usually run ok with the exception of the choke/cold starting, and are easily replaced with a real Weber or (my favorite) SPFI from the later GL/Loyale line.

Biggest issue by far in your area is going to be rust. Other than that you need to watch your oil pressure. If not kept in check, the engine will suffer main bearing and rod bearing failure easily. 160k is about perfect for a new oil pump and seals. They are cheap ~$65, and only four bolts on the front of the engine. Well worth the investment and 30 minutes it takes to change one. Change the sending unit if it's leaking, and it's a good idea to take a real pressure reading with a mechnical shop guage to verify.

    1) The "chaser" is the canadian name given to the EA81 Hatchback.... you canadian or something?? Anyway, yes - same engine. No "chaser" (or any EA81 Hatch) ever came with an EA81T stock. The EA81 Turbo is rare - it came in ONLY the Brat, Wagon, and Coupe, and only for two years - 83, and 84. There was exactly two EA81T hatch's made - both for the movie cannon ball run. One was destroyed, and the other is in the possesion of some automotive education institute in WA state. What you probably heard about was a member here on the board (rguyver) that put a turbo and SPFI on his "chaser" hatch. It had NOS and second injector at one point too, but the engine was a stock EA81 with 8.7:1 compression.

    2) Engines that will "bolt in" - EA81, and EA82, and turbo versions of same, but a LOT more work is involved for turbo's.

    3) Engine mounts? Well the EA81 and EA82 use the same mounts, and are similar to the EJ mounts - the EJ22 will fit in the chassis by slotting the holes in the engine cross-member about 3/4" outward - but it will NOT bolt to the transmission without an adaptor plate. Not sure what you mean by "turbo mounts" as far as I know there is no such animal.

    4) Fabrication? Well depends on what you are doing I guess. I'm still not clear on what you want...

    5) The EA81 trans isn't meant for anything over 100 HP really. They are good transmissions, but if you start putting too much torque through them stuff will break. The reverse gears are known to snap with too much power.... but the 5 spd from the EA82 will go in without a lot of trouble and they are more rugged. The race versions of the EA82T were around 170 HP

Extras.... look at the brochure scans on this site.

No idea on the safari racks - everyone that has one on this site that I know of either built their own, or had another member build it for them.

Newer dash - not possible without major work and probably have to be custom or from something other than a subaru. All newer models are wider. Impreza seats are easy - really ANY seat you can imagine is possible. Usually some fabing/welding is involved. I have late 80's Isuzu Impulse seats in my Brat - very simple almost bolt in with those, but they are notoriously difficult to find. I have legacy seats in my lifted wagon - comfy.

I would find another hatch with the correct window in it. Lexan is a pain unless you are racing and absolutely have to use it for regs.

  11. Well the breaker bar wasn't too big (YIKES).

My next question is there a cheap attachment I cant buy versus that full on kit I pictured in my above post? In your link it shows making one but I don't have a table clamp so am unsure of going at it with grinder and a big wrench to hold the socket end.

Thansk again for all the help :)

  12. My GL has the plaid seats in them I was wondering if its possible to get replacement covers for them? Or a place to find these that are not damaged vynal like mine.

If you see the tops of my rear seat is all cracked and ripped open

    Burberry

or what do you think would be the best way to fix this fo rthe rears?

I was thinking cutting equal parts out of each side and putting something under? I imagine I could not find eaxt matched vynal so....?

  13. A few topics on lights in one thread:

Years ago I had an old BMW 320i and subscribed to a mag called European Car. One of the issues had a lighting comparison guide of all driving and fog lights. Well all major lamps on the market at that time. Well I was wondering if any of you have seen anything like this?

I have been looking at the high dollar lamps and if I ever fork out the money for a pair I want the absolute best.

    CHEAP METHOD?

Now if I go cheap what would you suggest? I was looking at generics on ebay and medium priced items like KC lites, etc. Any size suggestion? I have a push bar/light bar on my GL and I think I could fit 4 lampos side by side but would it help much more than two?

    Placement:

Like i said I have a light bar, but I was very interested in possible placement near the sideview mirrors. I saw it on the old GL rally car up to safarai impreza. I never thought about it but I think it would light up a very good area. Anyway I forgot what I read on install instructions time and time again about x inches from ground etc but I want the most effective for dirt road/back road high speed. So suggestions please.

    YELLOW:

I have used Hella Yellow Stars for years. I think they are terrible LOL but in the rain and snow I like think they help. I have a very difficult time in the rain when driving on tar versus cement mixture roads and the standard white light just doesn't cut it. I was curious to know experiences of using yellow bulbs, films in both headlights and fogs/driving.

Anything else in relation feel free to blab away :)

  14. In regards to the 82 GL I picked up..

The brakes are real bad so I started with doing the front pads. The front caliper didn't want to go in real easy so I stopped. On the rear of the caliper is a rubber boat covering I don't know what. Well I was concerned on using the C Clamp to ocmpress the piston because of this rubber boot. How have you guys done this?

Also those caliper tools you can rent do they work on a different basis? Or more so attach to different points to compress the piston?

    tool ref.

    http://www.thepartsbin.com/cartools/automotive_service-brake_caliper_tool_kit-d.html

In the link it says it will rotate the picton back in? Is that possible?

    EDIT:

Also is there a way of puttting any disc brakes on the rear? Or am I dreaming?
