  1. Ah, good thoughts, thanks. It isn't doing it all the time, but I may be able to catch it. 150,000 on the entire car. I would think the clutch has been done once before...but I have no idea, and that doesn't mean it isn't going out again.
  2. Without pulling the tranny? For a couple years now, I'll hear a little grating noise which slows down then stops, when I come to a stop with the clutch in. Sounds like its coming from just on the other side of the firewall, through the dash. This is happening more often, and now I'm hearing some grating noises when I'm driving. Maybe more when I coast, maybe not... I can only hear this noise when something like a car or wall is right next to me, reflecting the sound back. It's not constant, though. Any thoughts on that? Same things or different issues? Slipping clutch is one thing, but I don't know how to test the bearings. 93 Loyale 4wd wagon.
  3. Well, for anyone who might go through this, the dealership ended up being the best route for me. I gave them my VIN, and they ordered the shocks based on that. They were the right length, and they came with spring seat; didn't need to buy it separately. Now I've got new shocks all around! Totally solved my "wandering" front end problem, and the car feels heavier and more solid and straight-tracking on the road than it ever has since I bought it 3 years ago. ! Thanks for the help.
  4. Well thanks and crap! I wish that link had come up when I was searching before....looks like I still need to buy the base for the strut, according to that thread...
  5. Yep, and I agree, even though $70 is almost twice what I've found (that didn't fit) in the aftermarket, it's still not too bad. I love my Subaru...but I'm a toyota guy. This car is just a car. A great one, but just a car. I'm not going to get into it and keep everything perfect and study all the mods I can do and learn all the ins and outs. I'm going to drive it and keep up the maintenance. That's it. And yeah, you'd sure think sedan would be the same as wagon. If it is, then the shocks they're selling for the sedans don't fit the sedans either, because they sure as hell don't fit my wagon. I'm not speaking from opinion, I'm saying I ordered the 4wd sedan shocks and they are TOO SHORT.
  6. Yep, that's what I'm running into. This is fun! Well, I guess I decided my time is worth more than my money...I just ordered them from Subaru for $74 each. I'm done doing all this research. Thanks for the help. I'll report back if the ones from Subaru don't fit...
  7. Yeah...a couple things. I don't like Monroe, it doesn't say 4wd, and even though it might just be a "stock photo", the photo is definitely not of the shock I need. I got a part number from the dealership, so maybe I can find what I need using that...we'll see. Thanks!
  8. No I don't expect you to be all knowing of all my posts, its cool. That's why I started a new one...I just can't believe there isn't someone here who has replaced their rear struts with stock equivalents, who can say "these work, they're what I used". With all the Loyales out there, and all the people on this site, it's just surprising. But I'll figure it out, I hope, and I'll post my results very clearly so someone else searching the same topic can find it...
  9. From advanced autos own site/words on that kyb model: Strut Assembly; Excel-G; Rear; Sedan; 4WD; Recommended OE Replacement; 2 Req. Doesn't say wagon. I would (and did) assume they'd be the same....I was wrong.
  10. Well, from my other post, 341065 is 1/2 to 1" too short, and depending on the site you look at, or where on that particular site, they do NOT say they fit a 4x4 wagon. Kinda frustrating. That's what I bought and they don't fit. But I'm on the right track...even though when I measure the 341065, I get 20.5", the websites say they're 17.something" So if I buy something around an inch longer than that...maybe it'll work... I'm going to call the dealership and see what they say. Thanks.
  11. Really. Can't anyone tell me what rear struts fit my 93 Loyale 4x4 wagon? I know someone must have just replaced theirs with OEM equivalent.
  12. I just measured the ones I got, which are of course too short, and they are 20.5". The struts I'm seeing on JCWhitney's site, which say they fit my actual vehicle, are 16.88" fully extended............................http://www.jcwhitney.com/gabriel-ultra-shock-absorber-and-strut-assembly/p2006169.jcwx?filterid=d1941y1993g2j1&skuId=3822591 I just don't get it.
  13. I'm back. So, front's went on no problem. The rears are about 1/2 to 1" too short. From Rock Auto, I got ones for a 4wd sedan, because that's all I could find. I'm looking on auto parts warehouse right now, and see a KYB shock that says, in some places but not others on their site...that it fits 4wd sedan AND 4wd wagon. Same part number as what I ordered from Rock Auto, which was too short. But the more I look, I find NO products that say they fit a 4wd Loyale Wagon rear. How do I find something that'll fit my car?? What I bought (from Rock Auto) were these. MFR# 341065.http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/shop_parts/shock_absorber_and_strut_assembly/subaru/loyale.html First ones on the page. Here, they say they fit my car. When I go deeper, the words 4wd Wagon magically disappear.
  14. If it's that easy I'll do it myself... Thanks! All they were doing was looking up what their book said on how long it would take.
  15. Wagon. I know this has been covered a bit, but I'm still confused...What is a stock replacement for the front and back? It's pretty confusing online. I have too many projects...I know Toyota trucks but not Subarus. I don't know if I have the motivation to get into a search for shocks/struts and then research and find the time to figure out how to put them on myself. But the shop I use quoted me $900+ to replace them! I can probably find the shocks cheaper than them, but that's fine. But their book is saying 4 hours labor for the rear shocks. Basically with their quote, I'm at $600 labor. That is NOT happening. So I guess I'm wondering what other people have used, that fits like stock, for the front and back. And if they had someone do the work, what kind of price they paid. I would just ignore it...but the suspension is pretty bad. Not quite dangerous, but pretty damn sloppy. Thanks!
  16. Thanks. I'm in Montana. Not so much rust here. As far as being an old car, this is the newest vehicle I've owned. Typically, when something is making noise, it's time to replace it. That's how you keep things running and not leaving you stranded. But I do agree; there are noises you can ignore, and ones you shouldn't. Just wondering which this is. I don't like having a failing fuel pump. Like I mentioned, I've been left stranded before by a fuel pump. I got myself out of it...but I was on the side of the road in nowhere southern Utah without cell service for a couple hours before I rigged the pump well enough to get me to the next town... My 83 Toyota pickup runs great with no "failing" noises. Yes, it's a noisy truck, but there's a difference between noisy and the noise of a part failing. So thank you, I'll consider this noise not really anything to worry about for the time being! Anyway, thanks for the replies!
  17. Ok...Well if people think that the noise is normal (yes, a kind of whirring, pulsing noise. doesn't always do it, but usually does), I won't worry so much about it. When I saw that it was external, I figured it's pretty simple to change, so why not? I've had fuel pumps go out in very bad places, so I figured it would be good insurance. Until I saw the price... If there isn't anyone out there who thinks that the noise means impending doom, I won't worry about it. I'll also do some searching on the Ford conversion (there's info out there?) Thanks!
  18. Ok thanks. Yeah, I guess I post here infrequently enough to keep making newbie mistakes... 93 Loyale, SPFI. The ones I saw online from Napa were no cheaper than OEM. Probably the same part. But if I just searched for 93 Loyale fuel pump, I found one under $200...
  19. Anyone had luck (good or bad) with aftermarket fuel pumps? Mine's been making noise since I bought the car. Figured I'd replace it just for peice of mind, but they're over $300! I would typically always go with OEM or better, but that's a lot of money for a fuel pump. Is that just the way it's got to be? I found one online for just under $200...
  20. 93 Loyale spfi. Got all my leaks fixed, but now oil seems to still be leaking...always a slight smell of oil burning when I'm driving it, but I just figured there was still a small leak somewhere, burning off on the exhaust. Two days ago, I start the car up, do a u-turn, and see a big cloud of blue smoke come out the exhaust. That's it. I take it on a small trip later that day (about 130 miles each way), and once on the drive over, I feel a drop in power, and a big puff of blue smoke out the tailpipe. That's it. There might have been one other puff while I was driving around town, but no constant cloud, doesn't seem to be related to hitting the gas. It's always had some hesitation, sometimes when I first hit the gas (fairly normal Subaru thing in my experience..), and when I'm just driving along, I'll feel it lag here and there, like a miss or like I'm tapping the brakes. It had this feeling a bit on the drive there and back, but I'm not sure that the feeling is anything new. Could have just been a coincidence that one of the times coincided with the puff of smoke, but I don't know... Anyway, why, if I'm burning oil, wouldn't it be more constat, rather than just a cloud here and there?
  21. Thanks. I'll ask for a price range and take it for a spin.
  22. So I have a friend who seems to go through phases collecting certain kinds of vehicles, and right now it's Subarus. He'll pile 3-4 up in his driveway, either fix them up or cut them up, sell what he can, and move on. He bought a GL wagon as a "jumping" car. He's done with it. Now obviously this car has been abused. But it's got the dual range 5 speed, and I'd love to put one in my Loyale. Obviously I should drive the car it's in, and feel and listen to how it shifts and drives. But I'm curious...if they were jumping it, obviously they were hard on the entire car. But is there anything inherent in jumping that is bad for the tranny? Does the fact that that's what they used it for scream "no way" on buying the tranny? Or would you feel comfortable if it felt and sounded ok? I haven't asked the price yet.
  23. Just so you know, replacing the oil pump won't necessarily get rid of the ticking. My car did it worst when it was low on oil. I had all the leaks fixed, plus a new oil pump and seal, and cam seals. Ticking still happens now and then. Sometimes more than others. But less than it used to. Most likely if you did all that stuff the ticking would go away, but not definitely.
  24. What is road speed? Rpm of course depends on how fast you are going, and in what gear.
