  1. also if you are gonna use stop leak its a good idea to bypass the heater core, after using it in my trans am my heater wouldnt work that good.
  2. i tried the stop leak in my car and it dint work for me,the car had 240,000 miles on it when i tried it so they where pretty far gone.
  3. when i did the headgaskets on my 96 obw the liffters where noisy for the first day, also if the motor is the 2.5 it has hydraulic liffters. The liffters should have pumped up by now with 1000 miles on them.I took the liffters apart while i had them out since alot of them where stuck and cleaned them up to make sure they would pump up,and let them sit in oil.
  4. i picked up my 96 outback on craigslist for $250 with blownheadgaskets, since i replaced them its been a good car.
  5. i heard in 96 it was the only year the 2.5 had hydraulic lifters, so you will have to stay with a 96.
  6. it might be better to just rebuild motor youreself, thats what im gonna do when my 2.5 starts rodnocking.it looks like it can be done for $800.
  7. My 96 OBW cost me $190 in machine shop (had a burnt valve) and $100 for a headgasket set.I looked for a 2.5 in the pick and pull yards but couldnt find one ,and they wanted $1400 for a used 1 at the subaru only yard.I replaced the gaskets with 240,000 on the motor and it seems to run ok.I also used the old timing belt.
  8. I unhooked the connector on the bellhousing and plugged it back in ,now the car is shifting good again. Thanks for all the help, im glad i didnt go replacing the tranny.
  9. I was thinking it was electrical also with that many codes going off, i dont feel any shifting going on.Ive only been driving the car for about a month, i bought it with blown headgaskets and 240k on it.at first the car shifted ok for a week or so then all of suden it doesnt shift aymore.also the car had torquebind at first ,did 2 trans fluid changes and now its not shifting.
  10. I just got the troble codes PO710,PO740,PO720,PO748,PO753,PO758,PO763,and PO743.My tans has not been shifting rite latly.would it be worth replacing the shift solenoids or should i just get anouther trans? are the solenoids easy to replace?
  11. $1500 isnt bad if there putting slotted and drilled rotors, performance calipers, ceramic pads, and steel braided brake lines.
  12. my outback is a 2.5 and all the 1 s at the wrecking yard are 2.2 s,is the stall different on the torque converters installed on the 2.2 s? if so i will just use my old 1.
  13. does that mean i have to take the rear diff along with the tranny ? the only way to tell the ratio on the rear diff is by counting teeth on pinion and ring.how do i find out what tre front diff is?
  14. does anyone no what years subarus i could get a auto trans for the 96 legacy outback?they just put out 2 92 legacys,1 90 legacy and a 02 imprezza wrx out at the pick and pull, the 90 legacy was in a wreck so that might be a good 1,the wrx was burnt out.
  15. My 96 outback was doing the same thing (torque bind) i changed the fluid and no more torquebind but now the trans is slipping and on its way out.
  16. The guy that owned the car before me drove the car on a blown headgasket for over a month so im sure that didnt help the trans.
  17. the last time i changed it less than 4 quarts came out and the old fluid smelled burnt.I like that these trnnys have drain plugs, all the gm cars that i owned you had to take the pan off and get a new gasket.
  18. ok ,im gonna just drain the fluid and see if that will do anything. When i first drained it ,there looked like there was some watter in it.
  19. When i pulled the trans dipstick there was some dirt in the end of it, im thinking the lucas freed up the dirt and maybe plugged the filter.
  20. I think i can get anouther 1000 miles out of it,its not slipping yet so i have some time. The trans is less than a $100 at the wrecking yards. The car was running good till i changed the trans fluid and put the lucas additive in it.I should have just left the old fluid in.cant expect much out of a 250$ car.
  21. I got rid of the torque bind ,but now the car downshifts quicker when coming to a stop ,and lost the 1-2 upshift.I changed the trans fluid and was doing good for a couple of days until now.The car has 240 k miles on it and i just did the headgaskets, ive put about 300 miles on the car myself since i bought it. Should i just get anouther trans ? or is there any hope for this trans? also what years cars would be interchangable with my 96 outback? I will be scouring the pick and pulls for subarus in the sac area for good 1. steve
  22. I did the tranny flush added 24 oz s of lucas trans fix and the torque bind isnt as bad,now just have to get the shifter worked out.
  23. Im also getting a clunking noise frome the rear axle when i turn the car, would this be torque bind ? I bought the car for $250 because of blown head gaskets and just started driving the car today. everything is working good except the shiffter and the clunking coming from the back. The owner before me was also driving the car around on the temp tire in the back.
