  1. Ok, cleaning the connectors didn't seem to do the trick... got bummed out cause I warmed up the engine and it was running great, took it for a spin and it started up again.
  2. Would the car run fine when its cold even if the timing belt is a tooth skipped?
  3. Ok, yeah I'll check the CTS as soon as I get home from work...
  4. Ok so I have scoured the archives for months trying all kinds of different things to fix this problem! Here is the issue: After the car has warmed up (91 Loyale) I get this horrible surging and hesitation and the occasional backfire... I checked the ecu codes, was getting a 35, so I removed the solenoid and put a transistor in its place... all fine and dandy CEL is gone. Ok, well that didn't fix it. I've tried to locate a vacuum leak with no luck. Also, cleaned up the mass air flow sensor, no fix either. Checked the plugs, wires, and the timing... still nothing!! Man its killin me. I love this car and it has been such a fun reliable vehicle and I refuse to get rid of it!! The only thing I can say is that when its cold and I start it up in the morning it runs awesome... just like it used to, then as the engine warms up I start to run into all the issues mentioned above. Please, does anybody have any ideas whatsover... I'm really close to taking the car up to a well known subaru mechanic in Green Mtn Falls if I can't resolve this myself.
  5. Never mind, took me ten minutes to change out.... Works great!!
  6. Got a quick Question. I was changing the belts on my EA82 and found that the tensioner pulley on the AC belt was shot, totally frozen and would not spin. So I ran to the salvage yard and found a good one on an EA82T. They look identical to me, so I went ahead and grabbed it, haven't tried putting it in yet though. Anyone know if there is a slight difference in the two that I am unaware of?
  7. Thats funny!! My wife is the same way. She just refuses to drive my subaru...
  8. Yup, past few mornings its has been well below zero!! No prob starting the 91 loyale... its just the first time I hit the brakes, a little scary!!
  9. Yup, I agree with everyone else... I had the same problem with all of the lights dimly staying on... two days later alt was kapoot!!
  10. My 91 Loyale does the same thing!! And has been doing the same thing for 20,000 miles... Just a little tick in the morning when I first start it up. I tried all the additives and it really didn't change anything, now I know other folks have had more success with it. I really have no issues with the early morning tick (of course the car does have 275,000 miles on it). Just my take on it.
  11. Sorry, made a mistake on the last post.... after I cleaned out the heater core.... thats what I meant to say... I don't think you can clean out a thermostat
  12. THis is exactley what my soob did before I cleaned out the thermostat. The car would be warm, I would turn on the heat.... and it would be hot for five seconds or so... then cold/lukewarm air. Sounds like the heater core to me.
  13. Yeah, my gauge just barely gets to the quarter mark.... but man is that heat get hot!! Its nice when I'm driving to work now that I don't have to keep my eyes fixed on that gauge as the car warms up.
  14. My heater core on my Loyale was clogged and its really getting cold here.... so I figured it was about time to fix it. So I tried the trick where you switch the heater core hoses and flush out the heater core... well that worked like a charm. Then I went ahead and flushed the whole system. Lastly, I finally put in that dealer OEM thermostat that I had bought this past summer. Wow!!! What a difference!! Before the temp gauge would go about halfway up before the thermostat would kick in... now just at a quarter of the way up.. and on top of all that, my heater is so hot and can't even keep it all the way up. Woohoo!!!
  15. Yeah, that was my plan.... Drain it, remove the T-stat, then flush.
  16. On a sidenote I found out something rather interesting. When I was at the dealer getting my T-stat, I decided to go ahead and get a new key made... since the only one I have is so old, I had to make one from the key code that Subaru keeps on file. Well.... the key technician let me take a look at the file that Subaru has... with all the history of the car etc.... come to find out when my car was new it was a rental car in Reno, NV!! I had no idea that rental car companies ever had Subaru's in their fleet. Just found that kind of interesting.
  17. Well I found one, called a local dealership and they had one left. So I'm gonna give the radiator a flush and put in the new T-stat.
  18. Damn! That hard to find huh? Well I'll start calling dealers, being that I live in Colorado there are plenty of Soob dealers. If I find one that has some I'll let ya know, thanks.
  19. Yeah thats the thing, I did a search on T-stats and I noticed that everyone says to get the OEM T-stat. When I replaced the radiator I just got one from the autoparts store.... bad idea I guess. Where can I get an OEM T-stat?
  20. I have a 91' Loyale that is awesome. It has been the most reliable car and has gotten me everywhere. I was driving to work this morning and I noticed the temp gauge really crept up, so I pulled over and by the time I got into a parking lot the gauge had gone back completely down to normal temps. After it comes back down I could drive for ten hours straight and the gauge would stay nice and low and it always does, doesn't matter how hot it is outside or if I'm running the AC. I replaced the radiator and thermostat about 3 months ago. Is this just a thermostat issue? Anyone have a similar situation?
  21. Luckily Colorado doesn't allow salt on the roads:banana: My 91' Loyale doesn't have a speck of rust on it. Sorry about the rust in the northeast:mad:
  22. I couldn't agree with you more!!! My dad and I always take out the loyale if we're going to be heading up into the hills for some fishing. First off, it'll get us those places your average car won't.... and the freakin station wagon is awesome for all the gear. Mike
  23. I changed the oil about 500 miles ago. It was pretty sludgy from the previous owner But now I'll stay on top of it. When I find the time here in the next week I think I'll go ahead and change the timing belts and reseal or replace the oil pump. This car has been real good to me and I want to take good care of it. Thanks for all the advice guys!! Mike
