  1. ugh... i think the oil pump is slightly leaking. i ducked under the car and was looking straight up and there is was a drip starting from the bottom of the timing belt cover. i can add that and resealing my power steering pump to my to-do list now. thanks so much for your help guys, can anyone recommend any other services to be done if im going to have the oil pump resealed?
  2. Thanks everyone for your input. I am going to also look into what Fairtax posted. The blue can has arrows from 1 to 8 and it says to turn 7/8th of a turn after you make contact with the engine. I am sure hoping I am not leaking oil from my oil pump since I paid to have every seal replaced on my engine around 30,000 miles ago when the headgaskets were replaced....
  3. hey everyone. ive always used subaru oil filters on my 98 legacy outback and with the blue ones, every single one of them has been leaking oil around the seal. i turn them the 7/8th of a turn like instructed and the filter actually is bottoming out to the metal on the filter on some of them. i was searching the threads and people talk about this by-pass valve thing that the oem ones only have. is there any other brand that someone can recommend so i dont have to deal with having to add more oil between changes? thanks
  4. another reason not to like the 2.5? ill safely make the assumption that the belt was not a genuine subaru timing belt if it failed at 40k. dohc 2.5s need replacement every 105k but i had mine done at around 85k just to be on the safe side. i also own a 93 legacy and ill agree that my older subaru will probably outrun my 98 2.5L but i wouldn't say this dude's problem amounts to another reason not to get a phase 1. mines been great to me after i put about 2 grand into it!
  5. i just wanted to say congrats on your purchase. that is a very beautiful looking subaru. i would have definitely scooped that thing up if i had the chance at that price.
  6. wet sand with 1500 grit then go upto 3000 grit and then use the meguiars stuff or mothers plastex. i just did my sister in laws legacy and her lights were completely opaque and they look brand new again.
  7. if anyone has done this before, could you give me some insight on taking off the front bumper on a 93 legacy? i know there are the 4 big bolts under the hood but im sure there are more other than that. would it be easier to remove the fenders or the splash guards to get of them? found a clean one at the junkyard to replace my beat up one and wanted to go grab it tomorrow. thanks for any insight.
  8. hey Setright, i took your advice about changing gear oils to synpower in the transmission from searching the threads and i am so very impressed. my 98 legacy has 170k on it and the gear box feels brand new again. no hard shifting between gears or forcing shifts. im so stoked!
  9. thanks so much for the detailed reply. ill give it a shot today. im guessing no auto part store would carry those specific bulbs. had to run down to the dealership anyways today for a front license plate bracket for my legacy gt. after 6 years i finally got pulled over for no front plate.
  10. man, i can't figure out how to get to the dash on my wife's car for the life of me. the check engine light burned out and i want to have it work for the diagnostic light. while i was at the junkyard i tried to take the dash apart on a wrecked one and i still couldn't figure it out. doesn't seem like the trim will even get passed the steering wheel. any help would be appreciated.
  11. i had this same thing happen to my 98 legacy ej25. the bolt ended up breaking off in the head when i was trying to get it out. i took it to mountain tech in oregon city and they had to remove the engine to get the bolt out and they just heli-coiled it. i just ended up paying for a timing belt job, new water pump, and all new seals while they had it out. i know your pain, it sucks.
  12. hey everyone. my 98 legacy ej25 dohc that has around 160k on it and i replaced the clutch at around 90k. i would say im pretty light on my cars and don't ever abuse them at all. the clutch is intermittently slipping a bit in all gears when i give it a hard throttle and im just kind of baffled my clutch is wearing out only after about 70k. does anyone know if there can be anything wrong with the hydraulic system or if bleeding would help the problem? i remember the clutch in my loyale lasted like 140k and it's just a bummer im going to potentially have to drop $700.00 on a new clutch in the near future on my legacy. anyone have any information about higher quality clutches that are available for these cars as well? thanks for any and all help!
  13. I am just so torn over it because I've always wanted an older GL and I just happened to have got my tax return so I do have the money for it. I was worried about the turbo on it as I have seen GL-10s have problems and I've only ever owned loyales and legacies so I don't know much about the older subarus. I would consider myself a subaru enthusiast but I wouldn't just keep it garaged. It would see less than 3000 miles a year of driving but I'm starting to listen to my more reasonable side and am thinking that I'll let this one go. The guys at the shop said they were going to use the car for shows as they collect and restore brats and other older cars. The shop has a few older legacy wagons that need new engines that they can put a 100k ej22 in with all new seals, timing belt, water and oil pump, hoses and belts for $3000. Maybe I'll do that but I sure do want that 84 so bad. If only I had $6000 to spend on cars right now.
  14. i have the opportunity to purchase a one owner 1984 subaru gl turbo wagon that has 85000 miles on it. it is an automatic with 4 wheel drive. it is absolutely immaculate on the inside and out, could pass for brand new as it was garage kept its whole life. the car is for sale at a very reputable subaru shop here in oregon and they want $3000.00 for it. i test drove it today for about an hour and the thing runs flawlessly. the shift into reverse is a little loud but it ran sooooo nice. does anyone have any advice about the reliability of the ea81 turbo engine or experience with this vehicle that could help me in either deciding to go through with the purchase or not? is $3000.00 too much for it? i need a second car for my wife to run around town with. should i put 3 grand into this or an older legacy that i know will run forever??? thanks for any advice...
  15. i recently replaced the valve cover gaskets/grommets on my 98 dohc legacy. i crawled underneath my car to check the bolt tension and noticed the bolts will get top a point where they will just spin and not tighten up to the point where you can't get them any tighter. my first thought was stripped bolts but they loosen smoothly and go back in the same way fine. if anyone could give me some advice or ease my stripped thread anxiety i would greatly appreciate it. i dont know if you wrench down on these as tight as you can get them or if they don't allow for you to tighten after a certain point.
