I'm in the process of switching over from a Carter Weber Carb to a Hitachi from my former 84 GL-10 FWD parts car. I have the Hitachi and I'm trying to reconnect all the hoses and wires. Would love some pics of a Hitachi that is connected to use to figure out how to connect it all back. Pictures are truly worth a thousand words. There's no such thing as too many pics or too many angles.

Lol. We couldn't find enough rope to tie it on. -

A few years ago, my buddy and I managed to transport a 17 foot Coleman Canoe in my 84 DL Wagon by shoving it up between the seats and having my buddy hold onto it. Sure made people look! -
Should I clean, replace or rebuild my carb?
Gyoas759 replied to Gyoas759's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
So how hard would it be to swap in the manifold from my GL-10? Is it a simple bolt on procedure? What do I need to know before I start swapping it in? And is the F3 or F4 better. (Or is there an easier way to tell which type of Hitachi I have?) -

Already took care of that. Drained the tank, put in some marvel mystery oil and 6 gallons of fresh gas. trying now to remove the Carter Weber. I removed the nut from the mounting bolt in the back and can't seem to find where the others are. Any help here? -

P.S. which might make the decision easy for me. The carb that's in there says "Manufactured by Carter Weber" Is this the same Weber carb that is used as an upgrade? And where would I find the model number or whatever on the carb to find a rebuild kit? -
I've been playing around trying to get my 82 GL up and running. It's got the dual range 4x4 in it. I've checked all the lines from the fuel filter forward and can't find any leaks or clogs so I'm assuming that the carb is responsible. I have no previous carb experience and I'm trying to figure out what to do next. I have an extra carb from an 84 GL-10 Front wheel drive and another EA81 carb from who knows what. Both these carbs look different from the one on my GL. The only markings I can find on the extra carbs are F3 and F4 on the flappers inside. I've already used over half a can of Wal Mart carb cleaner on the existing carb with no notable change. The GL has sat for 6 years before I got it, so I'm thinking I should probably assume the worst. How hard is it to rebuild the carb with no prior experience? Or how easy is it to swap over to one of the other carbs? If it's doable, which one should I use? Or is there something I'm missing that might fix this?

Need Report from Harry's in Hazleton, ASAP
Gyoas759 replied to Mikldom's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I was at Harry's in Hazleton just over a week ago. There weren't any EA81s there, but I did see at least 2 EA82s with a dual range. -
So I've been doing more and more running in the 83 Wagon. I have a vacume hose leak somewhere, so the engine will sputter occasionally and require a bit more rev to get it up and going. But lately, it seems worse than usual. Especially when I go up hills at higher RPMs the engine will sputter and the tachometer will jump all over the place. Is this the distributer on the way out?

Meet at Colchester CT SCORE!!!!!!!!
Gyoas759 replied to moosens's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
I'm game. Keep me posted. I have an EA81 shopping list to fill and Harry's seems short on that generation, so I wouldn't mind driving a bit farther to get what I need. -
Where to buy EA82 tranny mounts
Gyoas759 replied to tidd1340's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Best place I know would be to go to Harry's U-pull-it in hazleton, PA. it's how a bunch of us east coast sube owners keep our cars alive. I know for a fact there are about a dozen or more EA82 series subes there right now and the prices are pretty reasonable. Might be worth the drive down. Just an idea. -
1982 GL - Bad gas? Clean carb?
Gyoas759 replied to Gyoas759's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok. drained the tank completey. Added Marvel Mystery Oil in proportion to the 6 gallons of fresh gas I added. I popped the fuel line off the top of the fuel filter and put some gas down the carb to flush the bad stuff out of the lines. I let it run like this for a minute or so and then reattached the fuel line. It still doesn't stay running on it's own. You think there's a block in the line between the filter and the carb? Any other ideas as to wha this could be??? -
1982 GL - Bad gas? Clean carb?
Gyoas759 replied to Gyoas759's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks. The gas tank is draining as I type this and my buddy is out getting some fresh gas. The stuff coming out of the tank looks about like birch beer. We'll see what happens. -
Working on my $99. 1982 GL today. I have been able to start it no problem by putting some fresh gas right down the carb. After running gas through it this way for about 10 minutes, it would run on it's own without adding gas. it would run but if I were to push the accelorator, it would stall out. Today I put a fresh fuel filter in it. Still about the same. Everything runs fine with the fresh gas when poured down the carb but it seems once that's out, the car stalls. I also get white smoke at that point. Fuel filters are good. The fuel pump seems fine. The car sat for 6 years before I got it. I'm thinking bad gas. Do I take the gas tank out and clean it now? Or is there an additive I should try? Any other ideas? Once I get this taken care of, I just need new brake lines and a set of pugs and it will join the Trashwagon off road in PA. Thanks for any help!

I'm guessing not. I just put the bigger rims on and left it at that. I'm a bit new at modifying cars. How would I go about doing that?
-
How much oil do you use for a change in an EA81? Having trouble finding the specs.

I'm using the 83 4x4 wagon (The trashwagon) more and more and I'd really like to smooth out the ride. I am assuming everything on this car is 24 years old. This is the situation on the driver's side rear. (yes those are rust holes) Where should I go from here?
-
Today the weather was too nice to stay inside, so I gave the trashwagon a bit of a workout. Earlier today I tightened the shifter linkage down to correct the shifter slop and got reverse back again. Everything seemed to perform about as expected and I got some nice shots of it. Scenic since the leaves are starting to turn up here. The few things I noticed while driving around up there. #1. I need to do something to the suspension because the car really bounces around hard. What's the best set up for smoothing the ride out? #2. I'm hearing a rattling around in the front end sometimes. I know I need new CVs but there seems to be an extra clunking in the front end. Any ideas? #3. The car doesn't want to go into reverse when it's in 4WD. If I want to back up, I need to put it in 2WD. It was no problem today, but someday, I may need that 4x4 in reverse. Again, any ideas? Fun car! Tim, Miles, anybody... any update on that movie release date and all that?

There's a nice one for sale on Ebay right now. I think it was bought from one of the board members a little while back. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Subaru-Brat-GL-1978-Subaru-Brat-GL-clean-NO-RUST-Mighty-fine_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6467QQihZ012QQitemZ220153083408QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

I got the 83 wagon home to PA on Thursday. I took it off road a little bit. Nothing heavy, just some dirt trails in the area and it seemed to perform well. I love that low gear. BUT it was a really rough ride. I could feel every bump in the road and every rock and pothole really seemed to slam pretty hard. I think everything on it is original and probably 24 years old. I'm hoping to lift it in the near future, so what's the best suspension set up without getting too pricey or too in depth? (I'm fairly inexperienced) I'd love to smooth it out a lot going over those rocks.

It has the diagram but it's for the EA81 engine.
-
Does anyone have a diagram for the EA82 Vacume hoses? I got the 83 wagon home today. (It has an EA82 Carb engine coupled to the original EA81 gen D/R tranny) it's running great but not all the vacume lines are connected. So it does okay on general driving but lags on the hills. Generally it's behaving more like a tractor than a car. I want to try and get as much of the little stuff done to this car before I get it over to my mechanic for a looksee and new PA inspection.
-
I'm about ready to get the stuff to lift my 83 Wagon and I'm wondering about some of the logistics of it. I've been browsing and it looks like HI-Rise And SJR are the only places that are making the lift kits right now. Any reccomendations of one over the other? Planning on a 4/4 lift as of now. And while browsing SJR I saw that the rear shocks need to be replaced and the steering shaft must be lengthened. Does this apply to all lift kits? And if so, what's the basic process? Anyone know when Allied will be selling kits again? I asked this summer and was told this fall sometime. And anything else I should know about doing a lift?
-
Good call. I'm pretty sure the one next to the fuel pump is okay since I just put it on, but the other one has sat for 15 years. Where is the second filter on an EA 81?
-
I have it running now. I switched over to a newer fuel pump. Now though, it stalls out every time I push the throttle. If I have just put gas down the carb, the engine will respond to the throttle but only until that gas is used up. After that gas is gone, the throttle just stalls it out every time. I have the airbox lid off and can hear a light hissing sound down there. Not sure whether or not that's to be expected. Would love to get this thing driving today. Any ideas????
