  1. I'm getting to work on the 82GL and last time I could get it started but the gas pedal stuck to the floor. So it ran at about 5000RPM or not at all. I unstuck the throttle today and have been trying to get it started. At first it would almost start. I could get a few very weak little chugs out of the engine before it would die. Sort of a put... put... put... no vroom. But now I'm not even getting that. I've tried putting some gas straight down the carb with no improvement. The engine is turning over fine and I know the oil is old but it looks okay on the dipstick. I'm still fairly new on diagnosing this sort of thing. What next? Clean the carb? Plugs? Just trying to figure out where to go from here.
  2. Got it! Had to pull back on the steering wheel AND turn it hard to the left. Thanks!
  3. The steering wheel locked from turning the wheel without the key in the ignition. I used the key and tried to unlock it but it wont unlock. I jiggle the wheel, apply the brake, clutch everything but the key just wont turn. Is there any trick to doing this or any way to manually release the steering wheel lock? Need some help because right now the car is just stuck.
  4. Getting started working on my new 82 GL and it turns out the fuel pump is okay. BUT in getting there I pushed the gas pedal down and it won't come back up. Not with any amount of pulling on my part. So now it will start and run just fine, but it runs at 5000 RPM and stays there. (Creating huge clouds of nasty white smoke I might add from the 15 year old gas.) Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with such a thing and what is best to fix or replace to get back to a moving throttle.
  5. I'm finally home in PA and with working internet. Found this little guy in Connecticut for $100. Needs a fuel pump, battery and some brake work. (I think) Not to mention some body help. But, it's an 82 GL dual range 4x4 with only 97k and the engine starts right up if given gas through the carb. It has the plaid seats and power windows?!? I'll start hunting for parts for it soon. Right now I'm trying to get the fuel pump situation sorted out. This car has sat for years and was last inspected in 1992. Any advice on restoration? Stuff to watch out for? Any advice would be helpful as I begin with my new toy.
  6. Agreed with the fixing. If you can find a donor car in a junk yard or something, you can probably have it repaired for less than $100.
  7. I've used both methods on other cars before. Typically a good box cutter/razor blade is enough to get the cut started. Just zip the box cutter carefully and take a few times through to cut the seal as deep as you can. The fillet knife will reach what the box cutter can't, but it's more flimsy so be careful. I've used caulk on a couple windshields before, but for a window, you might want to use JB weld or something a little stronger.
  8. I currently HAVE a vacume leak and a lot of what you described sounds familiar. The idling at least. I'd take a close look and see.
  9. Sweet. Thanks guys for all your help. These cars would be such a headache for me if it weren't for this board. Makes learning easy. Edit: Got the pump out of the JY GL. Looks pretty good. Any way to test it without installing it on the car? And when I do put it on the car, do I just connect it and that's it? Just reverse the removal process?
  10. How about on an EA82? Since I scrapped my 84 (And missed the fuel pump) I'll have to get it out of an 87 GL sitting at the JY. Nothing is too specific for me. I don't want to mess up again.
  11. Man. I'm an idiot then. Anyone care to show me what the real fuel pump looks like?
  12. Does this look about right? I looked at a chiltons and the pump in the picture looked nothing like this. (I may be about to feel REALLY stupid) Is this the pump or did I miss it? If so, what does the fuel pump look like?
  13. I don't think it was turbo, but then, a bunch of compnents were already gone when I bought it. Anyone have a picture of a normal EA81 pump so I can try to match it?
  14. Bummer. Any ideas on whether an EA82 pump would work on an 1982 EA81? There's one in the local JY.
  15. I found an 82 GL that I'm looking to pick up for $100. It needs a new fuel pump. No probem there, I have one from the 84 GL-10 parts car I recently got rid of. My question on the fuel pump is whether it's just plug and play or not? To I put it in there, attach the connectors and wores and then start the car? Or is there more to it than that? I remember using water pumps and how they have to be filled with water before you turn them on so that there's adequate pressure. Not sure what the process is with fuel pumps. What do I do with it?
  16. I have to agree. Any expense you may have in gas, time etc. is so easily made up by how good these guys are and how inexpensively they operate. Good luck!
  17. The sickness can only get worse from here. Ever get to the point where you halfway wish something would break on your car so you can go work on it? Or, at current, spending $500. to ship a car you bought for $250. halfway a across the country to make sure you have it in time to attend a hill climb. This subaru stuff. It's not always rational, but it's awesome!
  18. Yeah. Those pics come from a 2 mega pixel nikon that I still have. I do have a decent camera, but the nikon just never dies. Works great for ATVing and all since it folds flat, and should I finally destroy it, it's no big loss. That way I can always get a snapshot if I see something neat/crazy. The downside is low quality pics. Like the picture I have of three bears running up a hillside. (Three black smudges against a greenish brown backdrop) Oh well.
  19. Off roading heaven. I think it's half of what sustains the town of Mount Carmel. And yeah a Centralia meet would be AMAZING for me since it's all of five miles from my house. Say, a barbeque and some trail riding/exploring? For those of you not familiar with the smoke pouring out of the ground on the last pic. Centralia used to be a town in the coal region of PA. In the 1960s a few guys burned some trash inside of one of the mine shafts. Well, they lit a vein of coal on fire and it has been burning ever since. The town had to be deserted and part of Route 61 was re-routed. So what's left, old overgrown streets/highway surrounded and intersected by logging trails, ATV trails, quarries and slag hills (Great for jumping) and when I first moved to the area over 2 years ago, I didn't really even care about off roading. Who knew?
  20. Exactly. I can drive an ATV out of my yard, onto old logging/atv/dirt trails and get to Centralia and back without having to drive on the road. (I just cross one) Something about off roading over fire makes things that much more splendid. I love it! Half the reason I'm building a lifted 4x4 sube is all the trails that are just begging to be explored in the area. ATVs are fun and all, but again, the shock value of passing one of the Mount Carmel guys in a sube would be so very worth it. I used to have an 89 Isuzu Trooper. But compared to the Dodge Rams, jeep Wranglers, Chevy Suburbans, Hummer H3s and all that seem to dominate the area, it wasn't original enough. Closest thing to me down there is someone that lifted an old AMC Eagle 4x4. This sube is going to turn some heads this fall. yeah. And I like the meet idea. I might be buying an 82 GL next week. If I'm free those days, my buddy and I could bring both wagons up for the climb.
  21. I'm moving home to Mount Carmel, PA in a few weeks. The GL and I will have to give that a shot. Sounds like a lot of fun.
  22. I currently have an 83 GL wagon with an EA82 engine in it. The exhaust I have on it has both cats and then a cherry bomb. It wont fly with PA inspections. I saw an EA82 gen GL wagon in the local Pick n Pull that has a good exhaust on it. I know the exhaust will mount up to the existing one, but I'm not sure on the body shape. I plan on lifting the 83 soon, so I want the exhaust to fit in tight with the body. Anyone know if the exhaust between an 83 and 87ish are the same? Trying to figure out if I can use it or if I need to make one custom.
  23. Tried it. With the jumper cables in place I still got the same results. So I tried the screwdriver, crossed from both cables. It got the starter motor running but nothing else. Thinking back, I'm not 100% on this. Was I supposed to attach the negative cable to the negative teminal on the starter, or on the little clip part near the solenoid?
  24. Okay. On the way to finally finish with the brakes on this car, but it didn't want to start. All the accessories work fine, but no ignition, no turning over, no clicking, nothing. Checked the battery cables and wires. All is tight. tapped the starter. no change. So i routed a jumper cable from the positive battery terminal to the starter and it BARELY started. Moved it, but it wouldn't start again even with the cable. Took out the starter and had it tested at AutoZone. works fine. Took off the battery connections and cleaned them thoroughly. Tightened them down. re-checked everything. Re tried everything. What's next? fuses? Ignition coil? Any suggestions or ideas would be most helpful.
  25. Nope. Man... one thing after another. I can get brake pressure by pumping the pedal for a while, but after I let up, the pressure is gone and the brakes don't work too well. What's the process for bleeding the brakes?
