My front diff has been whining for 10,000 miles anyway. During and after this past snow storm a repetative but intermittent thud and squeels began to show up in my front left area. I did replace the drive axle there two years ago with a NAPA job. The boots on the axle are fine and the axle feels good and snug with no play. The thud started when coasting to the left and now shows up more when accelerating to the left. I guess the squeek has been going for the last couple o weeks. Is there any chance this thud thud thud thud squeek squeek squeek is coming out of my front diff? Really sounds and feels like a drive axle to me but it's fairly new. 1998 lagacy outfront. 2.5 automatic

If you followed protocol and lined all the marks up before you took it apart and haven't moved the crank( key @ 6oclock and notch on crank position sensor mount lined up with notch on crank srocket) you're fine. It's not at TDC==top dead center. It's at the middle in all cyclinders so there's max clearance. Only turn one cam at a time to re-align them back from where they came. Cam sprcket notches align with notches on rear timing belt covers. The resistance you feel should just be valve spring pressure.

I think I'm in the clear. When I cleaned the overflow tank last weekend, I put the coolant to the cold line. Since then, when the car is cold, the level is exactly on that line. When it's hot the level is about half way up to the max/hot line. The bubbles are gone, at least for now. I've been searching for them for days( i'll be shopping for a hood unlatch cable if i keep it up) and haven't found a one. Thanks, folks!

I went about 50 miles after work averaging 72 mpr and then peered into the overflow tank for a good minute and saw no bubbles. My temp needle was where it usually is,underscoring the ball on the thermometer, not quite to 9 oclock. No hint of overheating. I've put about 500 miles on it since the HG job. Hoping the coolant system is still burping it's PITA self and accounting for a bubble here and there.? Is there a way to make sure all the air out?

So i couldn't find the bubbles when I went 6 miles at lunch today. When I drove 11 miles home fro work--there were a very few bubbles. So it really has to warm up to bubble a little. Gonna take it for a 40 minute highway test tomorrow to see what that does. Don't know if I should delay the inevitable or re-do that HG while the procedure is still fresh in my pea brain.
