  1. Just stopped by the dealer last night in Augusta Maine, Charlies Subaru. Talked with Linda in parts about replacing my exhuast on my 98 OBW. According to her and the pictures of the parts break down, the 98 OBW can either have 2 seperate bolt in Cats, or use the one piece Cat section with 2 cats welded in it. It also showed you could have 2 different places the rear o2 sensor could be located. Some its behind the 1st Cat, and others behind the 2nd Cat? It might be possible the pipe you have bolts up to the one piece 2 Cat pipe? Not the 2 seperate cat exhuast pipe which might require a shorter Mid pipe??? Thats my 2 cents.
  2. 98 OBW, 200,000 miles. Low fuel light never worked since I bought this OBW in Nov 07. It doesn't come on when key is turned to the on (ACC) position? Also there is no bell or chime. Everything else seems to be fine, no blown fuzes. Maybe the previous owner only kept 2 gallons of gas in it, and blew the light Anyone else had this problem? How do you fix it? Is there a bell or chime besides a blown bulb?
  3. Thanks for the info... I plan on doing a bandaide fix for now, then replace the exhaust system after winter.
  4. Help' My flange between the middle pipe and the forward muffler pipe is rusted out I would like to do a temp fix until after winter? Cut out the flange and slip a slightly larger pipe over both ends where the flange use to be. Has anyone done this and WHAT SIZE PIPE WILL SLIDE OVER THEM????? Also I plan on using clamps because I don't have a welder.
  5. Probably the rear oil seperator plate on the back of the motor? Leaks out through the bell housing. Check other threads on this, some have pics. Mine had this problem.
  6. What is a good OBD2 Diagnostic scanner that can be used with my Laptop computer ? I see ESCAN is rated one of the best out there, but it cost to much for me. Some on ebay for around 50 bucks? But not sure if they will work with my 98 Outback 2.5 . Not interested in the hand held , perfer the ESCAN type. Something less than 100 bucks?
  7. Thanks I pulled the code today, it was P0420 CATALYST SYSTEM EFFICIENCY BELOW THRESHOLD. I think the exhaust manifolds needed tightning? Still wonder if anybody else is using a colder plug? Or is it just my Dealer?
  8. I just installed a Brand New Subaru Short Block, in my 98 2.5 DOHC Outback. It had 197,000 miles and the head gasket blew. My question is the dealer gave me NGK PFR6B-11 spark plugs? My book calls for PFR5-11, but they said these are superceded to the 6's??? I've driven it for 200 miles with no problems, until tonight the check engine light came on? Coolant fine, oil fine, seems to be running smooth? Could these plugs be causing issue's?
  9. Dealer gave me PFR6B-11 NGK, MY BOOK CALLS FOR PFR5B-11? Has there been a change to use this colder plug? Or did the Dealer mess up? 98 Outback 2.5, just rebuilt last night with Brand New Short Block.
  10. I'm rebuilding the short block, new bearings, pistons, and rings etc. I have the 401 gasket set for this, but see another kit also, if you use a reman short block? I'm wondering what the difference was? I believe it cost more for the reman block kit. The 401 kit has all the o rings and gaskets included for rebuilding the short block? So why would it cost more? Thicker Head Gaskets for decking the blocks????
  11. In the process of rebuilding my 98 Outback 2.5 DOHC . Whats the difference between the overall gasket set 10105AA401, and the Reman Block Set 10104AA060 ?
  12. Must be wrong part (rod bearings) in box? Because these are about 3/8 inch shorter? And 1/16 inch narrower:-\ Thanx
  13. Thanks a million, I was hoping they made a mistake with the main bearings as they did with the rod bearigs Does anyone know the correct part number for the rod bearings? The ones they gave me (12108AA530) are for another engine, maybe 2.2? Thanx again for the info, you guys rock OH YEA, mine was built in 4/98.
  14. Rebuilding a 2.5 DOHC Outback 1998, It has 197000 miles on it. Bought new OEM Main and Rod Bearings from the dealer. Rod bearings are way smaller in size and are going back. The Main bearings have a different part number on the back? The old ones read S8BK X4, the new ones are S6CI E4? Are these the same size? Did a Plastigage oil clearance test, and it reads .002, this is out of specs. Book states .0016 is max. Normal is .0004 - .0012 . Haven't miked the crank yet, I'm sure its worn down, if these are the correct bearings. Part number on the box is correct for standard size 12209AA200. Can anyone explain the numbers on the back of the bearings?
