  1. well something else came out of the woodwork last night. we were going somewhere and my wife said she was cold so i go to turn on the air, and it's not very warm. so i look at the temp gauge, and it says 1/4 of the way warm. it does not budge from this spot at all, after it warms up. so im thinking that the temp sensor may well be bad, and that the thermostat is toast also, since if a failsafe was used, then they will OVER cool, rather than under cool, to prevent overheating. i got a new one for it, and a new gasket as well. managed to fix the stereo too! there was no power getting to it, turns out that the fused line behind it had come loose, and it had broken the locking tabs off the little fuse block that lock it together, so i fixed that and BOOM, working stereo. On a side note, before i sold a couple of cars i had laying around, i ganked the stereo out of one. i now have a nice little kenwood deck, and 4 6" infinity speakers and will be installing THAT system in place of my current one.
  2. you know i had good luck with wheel clear. seems harder than regular clear, from a rattle can. tru tru on the touch up thing though. if you plan on keeping it solid, you will need to touch up from time to time, and clear makes that step a bit more involved. plus for the clear to stick, you would have to wait for the paint to fully dry, id give it a week or 2, since its non catalyized, and then scuff it with a light grit paper or scotchbrite, and THEN apply the clear, or it will indeed fall right off. if you do clear, and need to do a touch up, you have to sand the area around the scratch then touch up and then RE clear to a body line, or even the whole panel, it really does add a level of complexity to the whole ordeal. tip for the year? avoid red rattle can, it fades REALLY fast, and when it does, it turns pink
  3. i remember reading something about this, i'll try it tonight!
  4. i zip tied a bunch of vacuum lines, since the o'cry-ly's didn't have any vacuum hose clamps (they SELL vacuum hose, C'MON!) it looks like an electric yellow porcupine, lol. i have to get a pic of that...and some proper clamps... tonight im hoping to get the thing tuned up and cleaned up, gonna remove some rust, and maybe tomorrow, seal up the rust spots, when the sun comes to visit us again.
  5. wow, i stand educated, thank you, i never knew about the octane ratings system, it seems trivial, but it really is a good solid point you make. mine is an 87, so looking like its gonna be the wire one. im really enjoying the 4wd. i have had about 5-7 subies, so im not totally green, but this is my first GL and its a hoot. im going to the autoparts store in just a bit. let you know what happens!
  6. being absent minded and scatterbrained, and having a tendency to fix cars in the dead of night in the rain, i have a few good uns. i was removing a battery, and left my wedding ring on, then shorted the wrench to the terminal through the ring. 1 brutally painful 3rd degree burn later i was enlightened as to why people suggest removing jewelry before servicing your car. also i was farting around with a running motor, and got my finger caught in a moving belt. one trip to the hospital, one broken finger tip, and one ripped off fingernail later, i learned NOT to touch it if the car is ON. after the stitch fell out, and the nail went with it, and after weeks of pain and wearing a finger brace, it grew back. still not exactly like it was but at least its there! one time, i had a boss justy RS, which we have come to regard as the car of the cursed, and i paid a measly 125$ for it. to get it home, i had to get it out of the ditch where it was resided for the last half decade or so. so me and a friend went to get it out, and had no winch, only a come along and some 2x4s. so in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, in the freezing cold we slowly walked it out of there, and got it onto a trailer, the next day, we went to drop it off at my place, and we stopped to put air in the tires, the driver of the truck that we were using let the come along loose, which was, other than the e-brake, the only thing securing the car to the trailer (mistake), he then let the e-brake loose. why i'm still not entirely sure, but he ddnt tell anyone, and forgot to RE-attach the car to the trailer. when we got to the bottom of a big hill, and began going UP this hill, the car leaped free of the trailer and made a bee line right for a new kia mini van, which it assaulted as well as a car propelled by gravity could, going up hill. the owners were not thrilled but the damage was fairly minor, and through we agreed to pay for it, they ended up not fixing it. whew, close one! and last but not least, i put some wheels on my boss 82 corolla, and it was looking hot, and i had taken it around the apartments i was living at, and it ran great, but when i went to move the car to another location, i rounded a corner and behold, my wheel fell off. that car has solid front rotors, so no harm, lol, turns out i had the wrong lug nuts. it called for some bizarre lug nut, and not your standard alloy nut. the important thing to do here is learn from MY stupidity and not your own lol watch what your doing and research your projects.
  7. also, whats a hot wire type maf?? and how can i check the ecu on a car that old, obd back then ment old broken and dented.
  8. interesting news to report. i was in the boonies in the middle of the night when i filled up, and i remnember that for some reason their "premium" was 90, 90!!! i added the best at the next gas station, when i was on e, and that was sadly only 91, but this seemed to make a noticeable difference. im going to have to map who has the good stuff near my place, since in japan i know they run on like, 103 or something. the difference between what it was supposed to run on and what it is running on is vast. so im going to dump a crap load of octane booster in it. jdm motor, i shoulda made the connection. also, it feels like i am indeed leaning out. i feel that i'll start with maf cleaning, octane booster, tb butterfly cleaning, plugs and wires. maybe a hot coil if i can find one. the only real "mods" i want for the car are things to make it last longer, as i enjoy it a great deal as it is, and want it to run as long as possible before i start stuffing an ej in there or something lol. im thinking of running castrol syntec in it. I'm also REALLY considering using an electric fan, to take some of the load off that over worked hamster motor, lol seems like it would last longer and id get better milage if i wasn't slugging a big metal fan at thousands of rpms:rolleyes:
  9. so i have a new gl10. 4wd, of course, with a jdm ea82t (or so im told, im not an expert on these.) and it runs as it should for a low mileage motor, except, when it gets warm. im not talking over heating, but i mean it runs like a scalded cat until it gets to o/t then it feels like its missing, or running rich/lean. its hard to describe, really. i can fix a scooter engine no problem, but with all the control systems on an 80s car, im not as good at trouble shooting. i've had a few other turbo cars, and had a good run with em, so im used to turbo quirks, and vacuum leaks, and when it happened it felt like i had a boost leak somewhere. i checked all the connections, and i still cant find a leak, i looked over the vacuum lines and they seem to be in good shape. no visible dry rot. it sat for a little bit before i got it, so it could be something simple. i have a full tank of good fresh premium, and im going to swap the plugs and maybe the wires today. i am not looking to make it a race car, i enjoy it for what it is, but i do want it firing on all cylinders, both literally and figuratively. anyone have any ideas?
