I rally one in the South Australian Rally Championship.

18 months ago Subaru Australia said that Subaru in Japan were currently working on a boxer diesel for the Forester. Can't be too far away now then!!!
There is a huge rush for small diesel cars in Australia that started about 6 months ago, Subaru need to join in or miss out.

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to say hello. Found this page making a few hits on my site so thought I would drop in and have a look.
If anyone wants any pictures of any parts on the rally car please let me know. Have just put a spare engine in the RX and tuned it up and it is making about the same torque as a stock WRX. Not bad for a 1985 motor with standard cams!!! Rebuilding the Group A motor now and will have that back in the car for later in the year.
Suburpy, where abouts do you live? Have been having a bit of a discusion with some other Adelaide Subaru nuts and are looking at getting some of them fired up for my car clubs Intro Rally on the June long weekend. You should get your farm bus entered. Great fun!! Also on any of the Walkerville All Cars Club rally days near Truro members of the public can pay $20 and get a few runs in some of the rally cars. The days are race days and if we take people for a run between stages it means we get more driving in for the day so are always happy to take Subaru fans for a run. Check back on my website for the dates and feel free to send me an email if you would like to come out. Clare was great, the car is way stronger than those roads as they are pretty fast and smooth.
Anyone thinking about having a look into Rallying do it. IT IS AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS!!!!

The webber carby combined with a better flowing exhaust will give it the best power increase for the money. I know here in Australia the 1970-80s 2.0L fords (Escort and Cortina) ran the same weber carby as recommended for the 1.8L Subaru. All that is required is the adapter plate to fit it up to the manifold. I have some pictures and diagrams if you wish.
Is what you call Rallyx grass courses or proper dirt? There are always used Bilstein struts for sale for the Subarus and they are much better than just replacing your existing springs. They go for about $500us a set.
Tyre size is dependant on the type of surace you are running on but I would suggest just staying stock size at the moment and getting some second hand ones they should provide more than enough grip for your car. After the GLF I had a 1982 4x4 wagon which I put some old rally tyres on and that was unbelievable fun to drive. The wagon was less capable than the tyres so I never bothered putting better ones on.
If you have the time then you could fit up a 4x4 drive train into yours. There are instructions about on these forums to do that but it involves swapping the fuel tank as well.

Finally after a few delays we got to do our first event in the RX. Had just got the car back from having new bearings put in and also the gearbox was back together with a replacement gear set.
Gave the car a quick 10 minute blast saturday night and packed it onto the trailer.
Drove the 50 minutes to Walky Park from Walker Flat and was the first car to arrive which was nice. Unpacked the car and put on the bash plate which we had not had time to do on Saturday.
The days are pretty well run which takes the first timers nerves off.
Sign in is pretty straight forward requiring $60 start fees, license either current or purchase a new one and WACC club membership. Took the car over to scrutineering with Bob giving it a quick check over with a few suggestions on general improvements we should do for running state rounds.
First run of the day was pretty good fun with the track still fairly damp from the rains which is a change from the usual dusty conditions. We had some timing issues causing detenation with anything more than 2/3 throttle. This hadnt been evident since the engine rebuild so we decided just to back off it for the rest of the day and get through the event with the engine in once piece and gain as much experience as we could.
We were pretty pleased with how the day went. Ashley and myself both got our first Observed License Test completed with just one more needed to get the National Rally Licenses. It was fantastic not to have to put up with any dust and although the course was pretty rocky the big ones are easy to spot as the soil was so dark and the rocks were limestone.
For $20 anyone can come out and get blasted around the course in the rally cars which is a pretty good idea to promote the sport.
Looking forward to the next club event on August 21st and gaining some more experience. Cant wait to get out there and use the remaining 1/3 throttle on the 800m back straight. Should make up the 2 minutes down there!!!!
Thanks to Susan for her great navigational work it sure does help having atleast one calm person in the car. Still have the grin on my face and if you have any road worthy car get out there and give it a run. For $60 it is a really safe place to start out with a whole range of cars to compete against. Thanks also to RSRLegacy for his help in getting the gearbox sorted, my shout for beers mate.

That is a great little car. My first car was one of those and it was just a hoot to drive. Can't help you much about where to get things where you live but just wanted to wish you luck with it and have some fun with your rallying. Have just started out myself and you can't wipe the smile off my face!

I tried sending them to Subaru (the USA site) they sent back something along these lines 'sorry, we cannot help you. you may want to contact your local (australian) Subaru." I'm like wtf??? I just sent them a link to this site saying have a look.. and please think it over. Oh well, maybe next time I'm in sydney I'll drop in to Subaru with some pictures. Oh wait, I've never been to sydey....

Subaru have a diesel Forester in testing at the moment and they are very keen to bring it into production!
Lets hope they make it along the lines of a quicker revving engine like the Golf and not slow revving like most 4x4 diesel motors. The TDi Golf is a brilliant little car, I rate it as my favourite small car value wise.
I can also add that Diesel is more expensive than Petrol in Australia as well.

Hi Josh,
That was exactly what I was wanting to hear. There I was getting fixed on EJ bokes that have 3.9 and I didn't even need to worry. It's brilliant that the EJ and EA gearboxes are pretty much the same appart frmo the bell housing and the bearing slots.

Yeah that looks like a legacy box. there should be some numbers on the outside of the transmission which should help identify it. That number will be on the top of the bell housing on the left side if you're looking at the back of the transmission.
Hi,
The case is still an EA82 case from the original L Series RX Turbo so I can't tell just frmo the case. Apparently the Legacy series gearsets are a straight swap into the older case though and I guess that is what they have done.
Just need to find out what models came with the 3.9 ratio to work out what they have swapped in. Apparently no Turbo Legacy models came with the 3.9 so it is probably from a N/A Legacy.
Any more information would be greatly appreciated if you have any more thoughts on it.

I don't think the gearbox internals are RX but I need to know what they are so I can get replacement bearings and cogs. Think they could be 1989 Legacy/Liberty gears. It is a 3.9 diff.
Can anyone tell from these pictures what they are?
Can Legacy gear sets be put straight into EA gearboxes?
Your help will be greatly appreciated,

In Australia there is a Liberty GT model. Its a single turbo liberty.
Saw it racing for the first time yesterday at our city's biggest race meeting of the year.
It looks excellent ans sounded like no other Subaru I have heard. Sounded more like an inline 4 cyclinder motor.
