  1. yay for lights! ive got two more im going to mount on a home made roof rack as soon as i get it done
  2. yeah the wires from the lights and motor go up to the corner of the hatch and into a little rubber boot which goes out of the hatch into the roof of the car. ill put up a picture tomorrow.
  3. ive got an 81 subaru wagon and the rear defrost, license plate light and rear wipers dont work. the rear hatch isnt the cars original and im guessing its just not plugged into the wiring harness but i have no idea where the bundle of wires goes after it comes out of the rear hatch and into the roof area. i have already pulled the panel off the inside of the hatch so i can see the wires going to the lights and wiper motor but all of those wires seem to be in good shape. also there are two wires that come from inside the roof but are clipped off before they go into the hatch and its unlikely that this is a good thing any other ideas for places to trouble shoot ?
  4. mmm i just might spring for a spiffy new alternator when i can afford some off road lights - then i could have the sun its self strapped to the roof rack for light AND run a stereo(which i dont currently have either) i decided to put in a pair of $20 head lights instead of buying a set of $150 off road lights. to make my self feel better i also got a set of new wiper blades which means i can actually see when i go up snow boarding !
  5. cool, now i just have to find lights i want for the right price. i want lights that go out about 2x the distance my stock high beams go. correct me if im wrong: lights go "fog" "low beam" "high beam" "driving" and "long range". i dont want stupid fog lights or anything like that, i want something that would kill a vampire at 150 yards. i cant afford to put up 12 pencil beams like the racing guys use so i think ill have to settle for a pair of "driving" lights for now
  6. i want to put some driving off road lights on top of my little beast but im worried that they will suck so much power the alternator will stall my 65 pony power motor... anyone know if a pair of 130 watt lights would over power a stock 81 wagon?
  7. i got a key stuck in my ignition so i just ripped it all out and put in my own toggle switch start. the reason its safe is that i have it wired so the engine wont turn over if the ignition switch is ON and it wont run if the switch is OFF you have to push the button to turn the starter and then flick the ignition switch to ON when its spinning.
  8. one brake light still works the other worked some times and not others, now it doesnt work at all
  9. i got pulled over in sherwood at 11:30 last night in my little 400 dollar subaru. the cop followed me for a little while. i knew i was going to get pulled over because i had noticed a brake light out the day before but just didnt have time to fix it(bad news its a broken wire somewhere not a burnt bulb). finally he lights me up and i pull over. he comes up and asks for my paper work. i give him my license and tell him the rest of the paper work is in a folder in the back. he asks if its not in the glove box and i show him its empty. he takes my license and goes back to his car with it. when he comes back with it he hands it to me and says "ok bud get that fixed, ive got to go!" the cop then proceeds to race around my car and pull into a parking lot 200 yards away where there are already 2 other cop cars sitting in the parking lot. the flashy lights are off but i saw at least one officer out of his car - no idea what they were up to but it was important enough to prevent me from getting a pointless ticket oh yeah i also noticed that my headlights and turn signals pull my voltage meter down a little and this doesnt seem like a good thing to me - is that a bad / dieing alternator ?
  10. 180ft/lbs aught to do it. i backed it out of the garage and moved it into the car port on its own power. i didnt notice anything that felt bad but i think i aught to get it aligned just to be sure
  11. got a rebuilt axle from Schucks today, popped that baby in there, only took me 20 min thanks for all your help guys! now i have a car again and i can go snowboarding!
  12. the donor car in question is a 5 door wagon style body. im fairly sure i remember seeing EA82 stamped on the engine which means it cant donate an axle to my car ill have to call the U pull in town and see if i can find some other old subies there
  13. so i had to tap the old axle out with a hammer - how do you get a new one back in? there really isnt a good way to tap on the back of it unless you take the boot off, pull the CV joint a part and then hit the back of the cup with something ... and does anyone know if an 86 wagon axle will fit an 81? they are not exactly the same but look close enough it might work.
  14. the other one is quite a bit different once you have them side by side i need to get one of those plastic keyboard covers so i dont have to wipe off my hands every time i run upstairs to post something!
  15. dang youre good! yeah its not the right one -guess thats what you get when you grab one out of a pile at your friends house i got the old one out now, just had to pound harder on it than i thought i should
  16. ok so what do i actually have to do to get the old axle out? you can see the threads on the end of the fresh axle so im guessing there is a nut in there somewhere holding the old one on... i thought i could get to the nut by taking off the stuff you see in the picture but sadly i am mistaken if i pull the brakes off the rotor will the rotor slide off the splines and expose the nut i want ?
  17. is this the little guy i have to knock out and then replace to put in the other axle?
  18. yeah once i got it home i realized how easy a fix it was, took me 15 min or something. i would have needed to removed the axle if i was going to drive it out because i am missing the balls to the CV joint
  19. i totally could have died driving this thing! it turns out that i didnt break the ball joint wheeling it, i simply caused the ALREADY broken ball joint to fall out of the lower control arm! normally i put up little images with a link to the full sized one but this one is important the ball joint has rust on it which means it didnt happen a couple of days ago and appears to have been ground off and not broken off. the lower control arm also shows some signs of having been scraped on something at about the same angle as the ball joint. when i bought the car a couple weeks ago i found newspaper carrier routes in it and that totally explains how it got damaged like this. the car would likely come off the pavement in places to deliver papers and if the wheel fell far enough off the pavement the suspension may hit the pavement, grinding off the nut for the ball joint.
  20. i have several wires and plugs that dead end or are not connected but the car still runs ... maybe i should just rip those wires out... now some of the wires that dead end are supposed to run my rear defroster and wiper motor... and who knows what else, maybe i shouldnt rip them out...
  21. for some reason ive always wanted two mice for my computer. not two mice to control one pointer but two different pointers on the screen. now people have asked me why i would ever want this or what it could possibly be good for and they just dont seem to understand. its nice to see that there are other people out there that want more of a good thing!
  22. i was messing around in the snow and broke a ball joint - not really cold related but since it broke in the snow i lost a few parts in the frozen goodness. also i may have damaged other things up there but we will see about that tomorrow when i have a day off work.
  23. a little clip of us taking it off the flat bed into the garage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fgdCdogaBs
  24. i think my friend John has a used axle i can stuff in there or take parts off of that will be saturdays project
  25. we gave each tow truck driver a 6pack of home made root beer!
