  1. ok, the hitachi is a bit stodgy, but it does turn in good fuel economy numbers, and it works ok (not great, but ok). i had mine rebuilt a couple of years ago, and it gives me between 29 and 32 mpg on the freeway, depending upon altitude, road conditions, and fuel type (some locales use higher concentrations of ethanol, which is not a very efficient fuel). with stock wheels and tires, would a weber give even close to the same gas mileage?
  2. Hey all, Now that I'm driving my Hitachi-carbureted EA82 at 8,500 feet above sea level most of the time, I've been advised to switch to a Weber. Unfortunately, I don't have the money for a Weber. What I DO have is an extra Hitachi that works pretty well. Is there anywhere I can pick up high altitude jets for an old Hitachi? I've looked around, but can only seem to find standard rebuild kits. I'm worried that I'll gum up my catalytic converters with the extra rich mixture (although it might be a little leaner since I've been running a straight through glasspack muffler). Thanks, Ben
  3. anyone know anybody with some DL headlamps they'd like to unload?
  4. Hey all, Anyone know which year Subaru used the quad sealed beam setup on EA82 cars? I've seen them before, and am assuming that it was 1985. Anyway, anyone know where I can find a set of these? The stock '86-'94 9004 lights are tres lame. I think I can get better slight if I switch to quad sealed beam lamps. Thanks, Ben
  5. I have an '86 carbed GL wagon and would love to see a wiring diagram. i'll even print it out at work, to uh, save paper.
  6. hahahaha! no seriously. no one knows where the horn relay is located? it DOESN'T click when i press the horn button. nothing happens. fuse is good.
  7. YEAH! Three cheers for a great diatribe!!! Hip hip...HUZZAH!! Hip hip...HUZZAH!! Hip hip...HUZZAH!!
  8. Better yet, where's the relay??
  9. But which one is the horn relay?
  10. Hey all! I'm trying to fix my horn ('86 GL wagon FWD), and I don't even know where the relay is located. I'm actually wondering where ALL the relays are. My little Haynes manual doesn't have very good illustrations telling where anything is. I only found out by accident that the fuel pump relay is somewhere near where my frontseat passenger puts her feet. Any one have access to an online diagram or something? Thanks!!
  11. I've driven my '86 GL wagon in sand on both coasts of the U.S., deep into Baja Norte and Sonora, Mexico, and into Quebec, way past Montreal. When I took it to Canada last month, the French Canadian border patrol couldn't wrap their heads around WHY someone would drive such an old, banged-up car all the way from California (has Calif. tags). They were convinced I had drugs in the back. The best part was when one of them asked, "But why doo yoo 'ave zee car part in ze back?" He was referring to my pile of Hitachi carbs and extra AC compressor... What can I say? I'm weird! Car works great though, and always gets between 26 and 29 mpg!
  12. what about fuel economy? i've heard that hitachis are better on gas than webers. i suppose the real solution to this problem is a fuel injection, but what a nightmare all the wiring would be!! i've been inside the dash, when i had to replace the heater core, and it doesn't seem like fuji heavy industries really intended for people to get inside that dash. like i said, nightmare!
  13. Would I need a different intake manifold for a Weber, or do they bolt right on? Also, what about all that other crap that works with the Hitachi to make it fuel efficient and emissions compliant?
  14. Hey y'all. I just moved from sea level to a town that sits at 8,500 feet. How do I adjust the Hitachi carburetor for altitude? Is it that screw on the base of the carburetor with the little spring attached to it? Thanks!
  15. Are any of you involved in this? http://www.24hoursoflemons.com/ If you are, I'd love to chat with you. I'm in NYC right now. PM if this interests you or if you have done it. Cheers, Ben benjamachine@gmail.com
  16. @backwoodsboy: Eureka! The car is licensed in Cali, but sitting at my parents' house in Virginia while I work in New York City temporarily (I hope). When I get home from work, I'll shoot you the VIN.
  17. So here's the deal. A company on eBay says it has Hitachi-to-Weber conversion kits for carbureted late-80s EA82s. Sounds good, but do the Webers really give you added power AND fuel economy? Power isn't really a concern, but fuel economy is. Will a Weber give me better mpgs, or will the extra ponies it gives me be thirsty ones? The car is registered in California (and may have to register it in New York or some other smog-testing place before too long), so it has to get smogged every couple of years. I don't mind hanging on to the Hitachi as long as redoing all the vacuum lines and electrical connections isn't too much of a hassle. Here's the link to their site: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Subaru-1985-1987-1-8L-OHC-EA82-Weber-Carb-Conversion-/270770060261?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Make%3ASubaru&hash=item3f0b273be5#ht_3623wt_1165 Ideas?
