  1. I've got another question, how likely is the transfer case from the 96 legacy trans able to fit onto my impreza's trans? hehe.
  2. Awesome thanks. So it looks like the one I want to get is TZ102ZAAAA-C7 and according to opposedforces, the one in my Impreza should be TZ102ZX3AA. Also I found out that it does have the same final drive of 4.11, and the speedo gears appear to be the same. It's a bit hard to tell some things, only because I don't know all the specifics on the donor car as I do my own so hunting for info is a little tricky but if the above is true, is there anything else I need to worry about matching up or should the TZ102ZAAAA-C7 bolt right up to my 93 Impreza? Thanks again.
  3. Please point me in the right direction if this is a redundant post but I searched and found similar posts but could find exactly what I was looking for. I found a transmission from a 95 Legacy 2.2 that I am hoping will fit my 93 Impreza 1.8. I am waiting for the person to get back to me about the gear ratios, I know mine is 4.11 final drive and I really don't want to look for another rear diff or do any crazy mods to get it to work. Another concern I have is the speedo, mine is cable but the one on the tranny I want to get looks like its an electrical one. Is it is simple as pulling out the wire connector and putting a cable one in? Any info would be greatly appreciated
  4. Yeah I'm sure with a new cable/sensor the speedo would work fine and the transmission would shift better, that doesn't help that god-awful chewbacka sound though. I would LOVE for it to just be the transfer case but I'm told if it were, it wouldn't make the sound only when decelerating, that's the only reason I'm looking at a new transmission all together. I would hate to have the work done on the transfer case and find out the front diff is bad. Unless of course I could get the parts cheap enough and move them over to a possible new tranny so I would know I'm covered either way. I'll have to check those links and try to find the parts I would need. Anyone know what exactly I should be looking for as far as the transfer case goes? Solenoid, clutch pack, any thing else? I know for the speedo, i'm going to get a whole new cable and the piece that goes into the transmission end.
  5. Yeah I've flushed it and put a new filter in just a couple thousand miles ago. As far as the shifting goes, it does drop 4th sometimes and it bucked into reverse twice. Also doesn't shift to 2nd on its own but that could be due to my speedo not working. Someone either here or NASIOC (I don't remember) told me the noise on deceleration points to the front diff since that's where the load goes when you decel so I fugred a used tranny would be my best bet to take care of all of those problems. The transmission in there now was abused a bit too, my nephew drove it a few miles with low fluid. Enough to drive, but low enough to trigger the AT light if not on a level surface. (long story)
  6. Well it has really bad torque bind, and now it's making a loud noise when I decelerate that I can only describe as chewbacka yelling.
  7. So I am looking for a used automatic transmission to go in my 93 Impreza EJ18 and can't find any around me. The garage that has my car says they found one for around $900 but I've heard you can find them for around $400 in decent condition, and I actually found one a few states away for $150 with 149k miles on it. The low price makes me wonder if theres anything wrong with it but it might be worth a shot, only problem is the garage says they don't warranty the work if there's something wrong with the tranny if I supply it, in other words if they spend 6 hours putting it in and somethings wrong and it needs to come out or more work needs to be done to make it work right, I have to pay for the additional labor. You guys think it's worth the chance? I am really on the fence about doing this or waiting till I have the $900, so everyone should vote, do it now or wait, and I'll do what you guys vote for! XD
  8. I'm not a pro or anything but, my rear diff made the same exact sound. However I stupidly did not check the oil level and just drove it like that for a couple hundred miles not knowing if it was dry or what. The sound got progressively worse, and the clunk became a grind which I could feel holding the car back everytime it made the sound and if I was at a stop light I had to really give it gas to go from the dead stop, as it felt like there was something holding the car back from behind and on the way to get a quart of oil for it (yeah, I'm about to check it a day late and a dollar short) BAM it literally popped. went from ~25mph to 0 in 0.001 seconds. Wheels were all locked up, and there was a golf ball sized hole in the back of the diff. So yeah, based on my experience I would say you should get it taken care of asap.
  9. So I was wondering, what exactly would happen if I just drive it how it is? What would fail and what would the effect be when it does? Just wondering hehe
  10. This is crazy! I can't find ANY auto trannys. Everything around here is manual and online I found some auto but they are for 2wd cars and too far away for me to get, and they wont ship I guess I should call the local subie dealer and find out how much the clutches and solenoid would be?
  11. Nice. This is probably a silly question but, I have AWD, is there anything I need to worry about for power transfer and such? anything that needs to be done with the tranny/differentials for the swap?
  12. Awesome thats just what I was hoping to hear. It's not silly to do that is it? I figure I'd wait till my EJ18 really starts dogging before I do any swap, but if I'm going to do a swap anyway I figure the ej22 would give me a bit more power and such. my 18 has about 200k on her now.
  13. Hi! Thinking about swapping my OBD1 EJ18 out of my '93 Impreza for an EJ22 some time in the future and couldn't find any info about that specific swap. I was just wondering if anyone has some info or could point me to the right thread if it is around and I overlooked it. Thanks!
  14. So I'm pretty sure I'm going to look for a tranny, seems like the general consensus here that's going to be my best option. I have this feeling in the back of my mind I'm gonna still have torque bind though haha even though I'm sure thats silly, since I will have replaced everything that would cause it by then! Hopfully when I get the new tranny I'll have an odometer/speedo too hehe, mines been dead the whole time I've had the car and I always meant to go check the cable and such but never got around to it. Now the only thing thats left to do to the car is get the heat going which hopefully only takes a flush.
  15. Yeah it binds up when turning still, not sure of the gear ratio, but I did double check with the supplier that it was from an impreza with the same size engine and all. It would be great if anyone knows of a good shop in my area that knows subies, it would be nice to have someone that knows more drive it with me and listen/look at things and point me in the right direction.
  16. Haha, let me rephrase the outcome of the old diff. It literally popped. As I was driving there was a loud bang, the wheels locked up, and there was a golf ball sized hole in the back of the diff. That is the reason the shop replaced it, it wasn't there for the torque bind. I'm not sure about the ratio but I did make sure I got the diff from the same exact car as mine, 93, ej18, etc. I would hate to do the work on the transfer clutches/solenoid and find out the front diff is bad after all and I have extremely limited funds, so it might have to sit for a while I guess. I'm in southern NH. there is a Subaru dealer not far from me but whenever I talk to them about this stuff they kinda act like they don't know what I'm talking about and want me to bring it in to look at it, but I'm sure it would cost more just for them to look at it than I really want lol. I guess my MAIN concern now is, with this whining sound (which only happens when decelerating), is it really a dumb idea to drive it? I guess I should mention, the day the whining started, I had just started on a 25 mile drive to a friends house when I noticed it. The sound was fairly quiet at first barely noticed a hint of the sound with the radio on, then when I noticed it was making the sound I turned the radio off so I could hear what was going on and it was still pretty quiet. about 20 miles down the road it got MUCH louder and sounds kind of like chewbacka. So the rate at which the sound worsened makes me that much more unsure of if I should drive it, how much I should drive it, and what I should do. Thanks again for all the info guys
  17. Awesome info, thanks. Anyone know where I can get my hands on the solenoid and plates?
  18. Yeah, I've tried installing the FWD fuse but with that installed the torque bind is still there and the tranny wont shift out of first. The whining sounds like it's more from the center. If I were to remove the rear driveshaft and the whining stops, could I drive it like that permanently until I get the tranny serviced, or is this more of a temporary bubblegum fix that I should use but to get the car from point to point? Thanks for the info.
  19. Hi, looking for some tranny help. My 93 Impreza LS AWD EJ18 automatic recently started making a loud whine when decelerating. the faster I'm going when I take my foot off the gas, the louder/faster/higher pich the sound is. I took it to a mechanic who says the tranny is pretty much about to die within 5-10 miles and that I shouldn't drive it, and is letting me keep it at his garage for free until I figure out what I'm going to do about it. Just wondering if anyone has any experience or knowledge with this? A little history on the tranny: I had a torque bind issue which resulted in the rear diff blowing out. got a new r. diff on and torque bind is still there, with new tires all alligned and rotated and the fluids topped off so I'm assuming the torque bind has no oter cause but the Duty C/transfer case. It wasn't long after putting the new rear diff on ( only a couple hundred miles at most) that the tranny started whining. As far as I know the rest of the car is in great condition and I do have about $2000 in it already so I'm wondering if it's worth it to take my chances with a new tranny (if thats what I have to do) or maybe give up on her? Thanks for any info
  20. Yeah I had the dials set to heat with the fan on full blast, left the cap off while running the car up to operating temp and slightly reving the engine and pouring more 50/50 in every time some air bubbles came out and the level went down until no more bubbles came up, took a good 20 minutes or so. Didn't raise the front end though since all I have is my cheap little jack and no jack stands lol. Raising the front end was probably a big part of the process and leave it to me to leave it out huh? [Edit] How much should I raise the front end? Also the flush I got was PEAK and it was in a far smaller bottle than the Prestone one I saw in other threads, the auto parts store near me didn't have the Prestone one, and I'm wondering if I should go out a bit farther to another one that might have it, or should I not worry too much about that? Thanks.
  21. Hi, I know this thread is sliiiightly redundant, I've read all the others related to it but the others have some different symptoms and outcomes than my situation. My 1993 Impreza LS Auto AWD Sedan has no heat. The A/C works great, and the air blows like a mofo, but no heat at all. I've done the methods in other threads to try to fix it, I got a new Subaru T-stat and gasket, flushed the system, burped the system, all that. But still no heat. Is it time to declair heater core as the problem? Give up and take it to a shop? Or is there something I'm missing? Thanks for any info.
  22. Went around looking for the GM additive, all the parts stores I went to only have "Trans-X Posi-Trac Limited slip gear oil additive" in a 4 dollar plastic tube. Didn't want to try using anything till I checked back here first. Thanks.
  23. Thanks for the info, I'm going to head out in a few to check the parts stores around here and see if I can track down that additive. My apologies if this was a redundant post, I did see similar posts involving different years and manual trans as opposed to automatic, so I wasn't sure if those methods were applicable in my case. Thanks again for the help and I'll post my results once it's all done.
  24. Hey guys, just started checking out the site, looks like an awesome community! I'm on my third Subie in the past few years since the owners of the first 2 I had ran them into the ground and I don't have too much car experience. Just got a 93 Impreza LS though and even though it has some problems I'm going to stick with it and make it %100! Currently dealing with some torque bind issues and speedometer doesn't work atm, so I'll be around here alot for info as I work on it.
  25. Hello, just got a 93 Impreza LS (auto tranny) this week and one of the issues it has is jurking into slow speed turns which I understand is torque bind. I've seen a few solutions, both temporary and permanent that I am considering and am looking for some input from someone tat has a bit more experience with this than I do. I've heard of the ATF additive that may or may not help, I've also tried disabling AWD via the FWD fuse (which for some reason also made it not shift out of first O.o) I read on another thread of a 96 Impreza having the same problem and replacing the transfer solenoid solved it. http://www.subarupartsforyou.com has the transfer duty solenoid for about 100 bucks, just wondering if doing this should be my first, or last resort, also im a bit of a novice when it comes to mechanics, know just enough to get me by, never done any major work on a car, so any advice/information would be greatly appreciated. there's a couple other little issues with my impreza but I guess this is the most important for me to tackle at the moment. Oh one more thing, theres a little metal toggle switch right above my hood release that seems to not be stock, and switching it makes the car shift smoother, any ideas? hehe Thanks!
