  1. Check this website for bearings. http://bearingsdirect.com/store/index.php?l=search_list&s[search]=6207&s[title]=Y&s[short_desc]=Y&s[full_desc]=Y&s[cid]=0 You can use the 6207-'zz' rather than the 6207-'rs'. Good price at $6.95. You are putting seals on the hub so bearing seals are not an issue. Eric
  2. FWIW- Assuming you replaced the head gasket due to a failure, I would resurface the head. It's not expensive and quick work for a machinist. Using more torque than the manufacturers specs can cause more damage to the head and engine block. Eric
  3. Earl PM your address. Call it my donation to a great looking brat.
  4. The motor really is very clean (mechanically). The valve seats still have a sharp machined edge! They should seal fine. The seals were hard but that is expected after 30 years. I was suprised by the low valve spring pressure. I didn't even need the handle on the valve spring compressor. Simply turned the shaft by hand. I am considering touching up the valve ports; taking the casting lines and dimples out of the port. Nothing radical. The front and rear crank seals were weaping so the block is caked in oil. After sleeping on it, I'll probably just clean up the heads, replace all the gaskets and put her back together. After spinning a bearing in the other motor, it is nice to see a good looking motor. Eric
  5. I have a gas pedal if you want it. Parting out a '79 Brat. Most of the interior is shot but the gas pedal is fine. Eric
  6. So, the '79 spun a bearing last week. Luckily, I found a donor vehicle 2 hours away in SC. The guy said the motor had 82K original miles. I took him at his word and bought. Tore the motor out on Sunday. Soaked the major bolts in penetrating oil for two days and finally pulled the heads off tonight. The cylinders still have cross hatch marks and no ridges to ream. I really don't want to split the cases. Any thoughts on replacing the piston rings? Eric http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=512379&id=1555183440
  7. I found the struts on ebay (suggested in another thread). We'll see if they actually fit. For $24 a pair it was worth a shot. I got lucky on the strut mounts and bushings. They were actually on the shelf at a local hole in the wall auto parts store (the sign on the front says 'Auto Parts'). The part boxes literally fell apart. HTH Eric
  8. I am preparing to pull the front cv shafts and replace the boots. While in there, I decided to change the struts, springs, mounts, etc. I've found the strut inserts and amounts but still need to find the springs. Any suggestions? Eric
  9. So, I decided to spend the afternoon wrenching on the Brat ('79). I picked it up a few weeks ago and have been slowly working through all of the systems before making it a DD. Anyway, I finished working on wiring inside the car and moved to the engine compartment. I leaned down to crawl under the car and found this fella staring at me. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=497780&id=1555183440 And then he decided to come back in after eviction.... http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=497780&id=1555183440 Thought you might appreciate a little humor! You can't make this stuff up! Eric
