  1. Nope... a loose bolt pushed its way out from inside
  2. "3) While I was turning over the crank looking for the timer marks it seemed like it would almost bind every now and then and after a trip or two around there was a clanking sound like something dropping (like every other little turn or other)." we know what that was now... hmmh.." also found the timing marks.. had to use a flashlight in broad daylight. now i got some bright yellow auto paint and marked it... here's pics: http://picasaweb.google.com/SnowScooby17/CamshaftSpocketIsDead#
  3. Hmmh. well... that's not too good. It appears one of the two (10mm?) bolts holding the back timing belt cover fell out... took.. idk... probably at least 50-100 trips around the camshaft sprocket and then finally blocked it!!! I'll edit some pics in just a sec.. gonna go sign up for some picture hosting... Any1 have a Pass side cam sprocket... it bent the ************ out of mine ... what kind of damage could this have done to the rest of my valve timing??:-\
  4. Yes-- it kind of does sound internal in the passenger side. not sure though. I've heard bad things about those ebay kits on the board. both as far as pulleys locking up and belts not lasting long.. any1 like to comment on that/
  5. Bad news... times at least five. all though one is unrelated. 1) Legacy vs Deer. need new RH headlight/marker and windshield rest regarding '87 dl 2) I couldn't find the 3 marks for cam timing on my flywheel... it's pretty rusty (The is one mark that someone made in orange in all the marks for ignition timing but thats unrelated ???) 3) While I was turning over the crank looking for the timer marks it seemed like it would almost bind every now and then and after a trip or two around there was a clanking sound like something dropping (like every other little turn or other).:-\ 4) Where do i get a full timing belt kit? 1st subaru wants over 250$ found gates set on rockauto for 130? are they good enough? I defineately know the TBs are wrong now. when the Driver side mark is top the passenger side is almost top as well (like 10 o'clock) Thanks again for any and all help:confused:
  6. So from what I understand the timing marks on the camshaft cogs should be 180 degrees out from another. I just got this car and was told the timing belt was done semi-recently. Then, the other day she just dies and it seemed alot like timing belts and there were some breaks in the covers and it seemed like the whole job was sloppy. Anyways. I get in there and the cam marks look like they are lined up (not 180 out). Before this the car shook a bit at idle (don't have tach) and got 20 mpg tops but seemed good otherwise... So I'm wondering if the timing is a problem seperate from my car dying or if it may have just now slipped some? (and was maybe off a bit in the first place) Basicaly the question is could it run those 8-12 teeth off timing??? or is that what has killed it now? Thanks. Here's some photos http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.editAlbumPhotos&albumID=912921 I knew myspace was good for something Never done TBs b4 so I'd really appreciate any advice.
  7. "Fitting it into the Dash As mentioned above, many new EA82 owners dive into a stereo replacement thinking it will be a piece of cake, only to find that their new stereo sticks out of the dash a couple inches! Now, our more “primitive” brethren may find this to be no big deal, but for me, I want it to look like it belongs there. What we need is something that will attach in place of the stock stereo bezel, but be about 2” thicker: a dash kit. A dash kit or installation kit is a plastic bezel that allows for the installation of an aftermarket stereo in a dashboard not designed for one. Two manufacturers make dash kits for the EA82, Pyramid and Metra. I personally like the Metra kit best. Other kit-makers have re-branded the Metra kit, but don’t worry, it’s the same thing. The Metra part number is 99-8900. You can get these kits at any stereo shop for somewhere in the neighborhood of $15. While you’re there, also get an adaptor harness for your vehicle. Metra’s part number is 70-8900 for the EA82. Make sure you get an EA82 one – many shops confuse the Loyale and the Legacy. Your harness should have one large white plug with most of the wires on it and one small plug with just a yellow wire. Your kit will come with a whole bunch of extra parts, mostly for the EA81 crowd. What you need to fish out of the bag is the large rectangular piece with four screw holes. Notice that the center opening, the one your stereo is supposed to fit in, is blocked by some large mounting tabs for a shaft-style radio. You’ll need to cut these off. A utility knife works well, as does an old hacksaw blade. Lop off the tabs so that you have a nice 2”x7” rectangular opening in the middle. Fish out the four mounting screws from the bag, and if your kit has a 1”x7” hole underneath the stereo hole, find the block-off panel for it and snap it in place." [kudos to samo] http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50840&highlight=metra+8900 Just did this. Looks pretty good:banana:. Bought kit on ebay for 15$ shipped. Looks almost stock.. maybe if i cared to paint the kit to match the dash... I got some pics but no camera cable... so maybe I'll post them when (if:confused:) i find it. Next I plan on fitting some form of cupholder into the 1x7 slot intended for an equalizer. don't really have room as i have 5sp.. we'll see.
  8. Hmmh. I'm still tachless in my dl but i agree that if you want to get anywhere you need to rev. I usually shift to 3rd by 40 or 45 and to 4th by 55-65. I really hate driving uphill though... 4th bearly makes it. 3rd revs so high @ 60+:-\[for like 15 minutes]. idk. aftermarket tach soon. any advice?? Thanks -5sp 87 dl
  9. well, my name is david, I'm 17 and I've had 3 subie's in my short driving career. I learned to drive on my mom's 1991 legacy wagon then i bought and still own a 1998 legacy wagon with 120k. the car just seems to run perfectly and is very snow stable which i love.. the clearance is aweful though and I don't really want to mess with it. and just a couple weeks ago i bougth a 1987 4wd dl.. with 130k. I thought it was a good deal for 1000$ but now I'm not absolutely sure. It's kind of quirky but i suppose we'll see. Parts are cheap and i hope i can learn a decent amount cars by working on it...
