  1. I found my 2.2 y pipe on car-part.com, paid $100 plus shipping from a company in CO. I think any car from 1996 and newer with the 2.2L single port exhaust will work. Here is a guy on CL that has been trying to sell one for a while, you could see if it's still available. He say's 2.2 y pipe, but I'd recommend you verify it is a single port first, ask for a picture, as he may not know the difference: http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wsh/pts/1922163691.html
  2. Yeah, if it were my car I'd fix the motor you got. With only 130K, you should have lot's of life left. Replace both head gaskets too (I assume you know about the HG issues with these 2.5L, and about what gaskets to use or not to use...). You know about the rear seperator plate too, etc? If not, just ask. Also, check the valve adjustment, and if you need different shims let me know as I have a few of these (and 16 more now too:-) Good luck!
  3. Try bleeding the clutch, this may work. Have someone push the clutch to the floor, then open and close the bleeding nut on the hydraulic cylinder on the bell housing. You'll have to pull the clutch lever up by hand as it will tend to stay on the floor (after closing the bleeder nut of course), repeat a few times (makes sure you don't run out of fluid!), and see if that helps.
  4. OK, found a small piece of sealant plugging the cross holes for the oil channels to the cam journals.
  5. Yeah, took the cam cover off, it's the journal closest to the rear of the engine that seized. I plan to take the head off today to see if I can find something in the oil passage. I did a compression test on passenger side, seems to be OK but will repeat once I put the timing belt back on. I have another head to install, so owner just wants me to install that and wrap this up. Oil level in engine is fine, so like others on the post mentioned, I'm thinking something plugged the tiny hole that lubes that back journal. I'll post updates once I know for sure. I've done (3) 2.2L conversions so far, they go pretty well and are better motors, get better gas mileage too. Yes, a few less ponies, but not too bad really. I'm a 2.2L fan, what can I say... You got a good deal on that car, you have room to budge either way costwise. Way to go!
  6. Follow up to my questions: I ended up installing a 2001 EJ22 2.2L block into the 2000 Forester, used the original 2.5L intake, cam and crank pulleys / gears. Initally I didn't swap out the cam and crank gears, but the car wouldn't start. I disassembled and compared, and they are different so once I put the 2.5 cam and crank pulleys / gears on the 2.2 engine, it started right up. I also went thru the motor completely replacing every gasket except head gaskets, etc, to make sure everything would last for another 100k. Everything bolted up fine, the 2.5L intake bolted directly onto the 2.2L block, the car runs great, no issues. Thanks all for the helpful advice, much appreciated!
  7. Update: camshaft is locked up solid, hence the broken gear. I'll do a search to see what would cause that, but anyone have any ideas? Sounds like a good time to do the 2.2L conversion...
  8. Thanks for the replies, I do plan to see if all the cams spin freely, and also do a compression test once the timing belt is back on to see if any valves were damaged. I hope not... About the kinked gear, what does that mean? I slid it all the way on with the key lined up, then install the bolt and torqe it. Notice the gear didn't break around the bolt, rather just disinegrated... On the head gaskets, I use six star multi layer brand, the best I've seen yet to fix the head gasket issue. allwheeldriveauto.com describes these. Anyway, I'll keep you posted what I find. Thanks again!
  9. 170k miles, just redid head gaskets a year ago, now this. Anyone see this before? What would cause the cam gear to break apart like this? Everything was torqued to specs when I put it back together, and car has not been in any accidents. Opinions / comments / thoughts?
  10. If the 2000+ 2.2L intakes are the same as the 2.5L, perhaps I'm better off getting a 2000 or 2001 2.2L and using that block, then swap on the 2.5L intake from the Forester? There is one of those for sale here, and I could put this 2.2L into another car, so no loss for me. Thoughts?
  11. Does anyone know if a 2001 2.2L from an Impreza will swap into a 2000 Forester, MT? My biggest concern is plugging in the wiring harness. I know I'll have to swap y-pipe, tap the starter hole, etc.
  12. Yeah, by "won't plug" I mean the electrical won't plug in. 2000 Forester has 2 square electrical plugs, and the 1997 2.2L intake has 2 square plugs and 1 smaller plug. Also, the 2.2L intake has a different idle control valve, which has a vacuum line that should be attached to the air intake (Forester air intake has no tube for this to attach to).
  13. Hi, new to the forum, sorry if this question is in the wrong location. I'm putting in a 1997 EJ22 into a 2000 Forester, MT. Everything is in place (tapped starter hole with 1/2-13 UNC thread, worked great), except the intake won't plug into the car. Any one know if a 2000 or 2001 EJ22 intake will? I'd like to know before buying one from across the country, as no local yards have these intakes. Thanks a bunch!
