  1. I found a site with more help in translating the tranny number. http://legacycentral.org/library/transmission/intro.htm More helpful than most. I have cracked the code on my #2 that I mentioned previously: TY752VA1AA T= TRANSMISSION (dah) Y= 4WD MT 75 = DISTANCE BETWEEN GEARS (?) 2= SERIES CODE V= FULL TIME 4WD A=2200cc 1=1900 yr AA= meaningless I want to go back with some engine cleaner and brush and see if I can find the tranny number on the other two. I'll also verfy if they are turbo or NA. Steve
  2. Ok, I'm back from the junkyard and have found 3 prospects out of 5 they had. (1 was AT, 1 was 2WD). 1) mfg date 07/88 5 spd 4wd DR. 342k miles, engine and axles still in the car. Couldn't count the splins. I think it was NA engine. I couldn't find the tranny label but did get the VIN = JF2AN53BXKE408495. 2) mfg date 10/89 5 spd AWD, 350k miles, engine and axles still in car and again I couldn't count the splins. the engine was NA. Tranny label was TY752VA1AA. The TY tells me it is FT AWD. The VIN was JF2BJ63C8LG937240. 3) mfg date 02/88 5 spd 4wd DR. 235k miles. No label on tanny and axles couldn't get under car to count splines. I believe it was NA as well. VIN was JF2AC53B4JE219886 I'm not sure which way to go. The price is going to be the same for either of the three. It looks like the numbers on tranny #2 is the same as the example in Numchux provided. It has the most miles however, if that were a factor. I'm thinking I might like the DR since it seem that feature would be to some advantage since most of my driving will be on street and the low gearing would get me out of some steep driveway situation. (if I can keep all the wheels from slipping, as someone suggested). Opinions?? Steve BTW: this yard will sell any of these for $125 plus S/H if they pull them. I have a special arrangement with them since I do a lot of business with them throu my repair shop. I my case I would pull it myself and get the axles, cross member, drive shaft and shifter.
  3. The PT4WD you mention here is basically what my old Gen1 Brat has now and the only problem I have with that is lack of D/R and the lack of compatability with the EJ22 swap. Not to mention the very poor reputation of the OEM Gen1 Brat tranny. Mine show all of these problems, although it is still driveable. Thanks for the informative reply. Steve
  4. Thanks. I have been doing some other reading/research on tranny models on this forum and understand that the XT6 model would be the prefered for street use (my intentions). I also read that it was available MY '88 and '89. Just checking my info and understanding. Now, being a Soobie-Newbie, I need to ask if this tranny is FT or 4WD and would it be too much to expect that it be D/R?? I plan on using my Gen1 Brat for street but need to be ready for snow and ice. Not planning on rock climbing or mud plowing. I might do a minor lift to make the EJ22 and tranny swap easier. I guess, what I'm looking for is good mileage everyday and traction in winter. Any comments (or corrections on my terms and assumptions) welcome. Steve
  5. Thanks Bill and Zefy, I appreciate all the info and encouragement both here and else where on this forum. I finally did find the .PDF file on the EJ22 swap and that a treasure that is. It took a lot of collective input to come up with all that info. As I have been 'nosing' around and reading up on this project, I am slowly becoming Bi-Lingual in the Jargon. To aid in this I have begun compiling a Crib Sheet. After I get it a bit more prefected (proofed), I will post it for other Soobie NewBies. (Or maybe it has already been done and posted and I haven't found it yet.) I haven't been back to the junkyard yet to ID the car and 5 spd yet. Been raining and when I was there the other day, the water was ankle deep everywhere (western WA). I found a post/thread "EJ Swap who's who" and was very impressed with Jibs post with pictures. First, his Brat looks really nice and kinda wish I had a better one to start with. (mine is a real Beater) However, might be best to start with it and move to a nicer one at a later time. Anyway "A dozen pictures is worth a thousand words" when you need encouragement. Thanks Jibs, nice job. I notice in some of the info on the EJ swaps, they have swaped out the rear end. Is this to obtain the advantage of the LSD?? Also, which trannys will give me DR and which are FT?? (I'll add that info to my crib sheet.) I might mention that I want my Brat for street and snow and don't plan to climb rocks or plow mud. Hey! guys, I'm 72 yo and have raise a couple off-roaders. Enough for one post. Thanks again. Seems like a great forum and hope I can contribute as I learn. Steve (the AVATAR is really not me but is what I would look like if I hadn't quit smoking 20 years ago. That's what I tell my Grand kids.)
  6. I have located a couple Subaru "donors" in the local wrecking yard. I'm going back later (when it's not raining) and see what model they are. They are still in the cars so I can probably get some info from the VIN numbers or?? Is there any other way to verify the model of the tranny?? Steve
  7. I have read what I could find with great interest. However, I can't get any of the links to the EJ Swap .PDF to work. Could you provide a link to this .PDF file current location. Thanks Steve
  8. I'm new to the Subaru and have a Brat. I also have a 2.2 Legacy engine that I was going to put into a Vanagon (never happened). I want to look into the feasability of putting the 2.2 into my Brat. I've been told in another forum post, that it can and has been done. I can't seem to find any posts regarding this Transplant. I've taken enough rough measurement to convince me that the 2.2 will fit but I recognized from the outset that the 2.2 won't work with the Brat 4 spd transmission. The differing starter location is the most obvious and I don't see any adaptor plate solution. I would be inclined to swap out the tranny with a later model 5 spd 4WD and not being familiar with which models are suitable for this....... I need comments or direction to the posts that address this type of Transplant. I'm told (in another post) that it is a major undertaking. Steve
  9. I looked the Legacy 2.2 over and all I could find was the SN: 344027. No model designation. However, I was thinking it came from a 5 spd 2WD car but it has a flex plate, so it came from an automatic. Might make a slight difference on the electronics. I also did some rough measurements and the width is going to be tight. The 1.6 is about 3" narrower than the 2.2. There appears to be enough room between the frame members but not enough to remove the valve covers on the 2.2. If this 2.2 has hydraulic lifters that should be a "frequent" problem. The only difference in length seems to be in the double belt pulleys and the spare room between the 1.6 and the radiator should accomodate that. Now I need to do some research on the tranny bell housing problem. I don't think an adapter plate is an option. The starter location just it too big a deal to over come with an adapter plate. I went to my favorite salvage yard and found a 5 spd 4 WD transmittion and even if I don't purchase it, I will be allowed to check it for measurements and other fit problems. Now I will go look for more info in the archieves regarding this type of project. I'm sure I'm missing something and would appreciate comments and suggestions. Eye Wide Open!! Steve
  10. Hey SubieGuy, Don't throw away that old headliner. It's far better than mine ('79 GL Brat). Yah. That speaker "freak" must have had something to do with the After Market Moon/Sun roof in mine. The roof install was well done but they butchered the headliner and provided no support for the cutout opening. It has now curled down and cracked around the hole corners. Talk to me about a deal on your old one. Steve
  11. While searching for info on the Brat last week, before purchasing my First, I came across a Factoid (that I have since lost). If I remember correctly, it stated that there were something like 92 thousand Brats imported to the US during the 78 to (what ever date they stopped US Import). That does seem like a very small number but it true, that could explain the current demand I have noted. Any info on this trivia would of interest to me or others. Steve
  12. Thanks Rebel. That sounds encouraging. I haven't found any post in the Mod forum yet, but I have only begun looking. From what I see, I should learn the engine and tranny 'lingo'. All I know right now is my Brat has a 1.6L and the Legacy engine is a 2.2L from a early 90s 2WD sedan. When I removed the 2.2L I took every thing including the complete engine compartment and under dash harness and attached components. Since I was planning to do a Kennedy Vanagon install, I didn't pay any attention to the transmition. And didn't salvage any harness behind the "A" pillar. If anyone thinks I am going to need a Legacy trans/axle/transfer case, I know where there is one available. Right now, I think I should start by digging out the 2.2L and find the engine number. I'm sure it is a non-turbo and single cam (per head). If I'm lucky, my tag on it will tell me more including how many miles are on it. Well, if this goes forward, I will have one running and two spare 1.6L engines for sale or swap. Looking forward to hearing from any or all who have done the 2.2L to Brat swap. Steve
  13. Has this been done or is it possible?? Just purchased a '79 GL Brat. It has a running 1.6 in it. So many off engine components are missing, wiring and vacuum "jury-rigged", it's going to take some doing to even get it to point that I can drive it on the road. Now I look over in the corner of my shop and there is a low mileage 2.2 Legacy engine with all the components for a Vanagon conversion (that I just never got around to. I'm always looking for a challenge and think I would be, but have to ask, has or can it be done?? I can see that the Brat bell housing has the starter on the top, while the 2.2 is off to the side a bit. To my "eye" it looks like there is enough room between the strut towers, but I have to do some other measurements as well. I have a complete machine shop as well as welding and metal fabriction skills. Some or many may disagree and say "leave well enough alone", but I really like my fuel injection and think the 2.2 legacy is a very nice engine. (gotta use it for something and can't justify driving a big-ole Vanagon anymore.) Opinions and comments (no flames) welcome! Steve
  14. I've been around the shop for a while (72+) and noticed the Brats when they showed up in the late '70s. Thought of them as a pretty neat truck. In recent years, I saw fewer and fewer Brats on the road. Several years ago, I studies up on the Subaru engines and developed an appreciation for their engineering and general reliability. I even salvaged a Legacy engine for a Vanagon convertion (that I never got around to). Still have it. In retirement, I began specializing in Geo Metro and have nearly a dozen of them. Buy/fix/Sell. I seem to do more of the first. Last friday, while scanning Craigslist, I noted an ad for a running '79 Brat in Portland OR. area, about 150 miles away. The price was good and the seller expressed some urgency to sell. He also was throwing in 2 extra engines. I drove down there the next day and started it up. The exhaust was open and the engine ran at a fast(er) idle but ran and we were able to make a deal and drive it onto my dolly. Got it home and after charging the battery, I started it and drove it off the dolly and around my 1 acre lot. There are many missing. off engine, components and the ignition switch won't turn to the off position so that is why the engine can only be stopped by stalling it or removing the battery cable. All the wiring and vacuum hoses are "jury-rigged". Still I think I got a good deal and think I will be happy with my new little truck. Once fixed up and reliable, I will get rid of my old '88 S-10 4x4. The Brat appears to be easier to work on at least. As you may have noted, my Posts tend to 'long-winded' and I apologize for that. Thanks for this web site. I'll be around a lot. Steve
