  1. Thanks! I'll try the brake cleaner trick. I replaced an IAC valve on a domestic car and still can't believe i got it done right, but it works. Yours sounds like quite a bit more money. I found the ECU trouble codes using directions on this site: Four problems going on according to morse code from engine light - O2 sensor, starter switch, AF learning control, and Air flow sensor. Called auto parts for prices of O2 sensor - $50 Air Flow sensor is $220 with $30 core refund. My question is: if I get these used at local junk yard, is it worth risking used sensors from a junked car with only 60K mi. AND / OR since the black wire trouble code test also tests prior problems, how do i know these problems haven't already been fixed but the last mechanic didn't clear the codes? thanks.
  2. 91 Legacy LS wagon, Auto, 2.2L. Lately, after a few minutes driving, the check engine light comes on, and when idling, the rpms rev for a few minutes, then it backs down to nearly a stall. sometimes it does stall. If I'm trying to get across town and keep the rpms up and make the stop lights, i can keep it going without stalling. fuel pump? timing belt? suggestions?
  3. Awesome fix-it journal! Thanks!! I'm going to give it a go this week, will let you know how it goes.
  4. On the subject of door locks, is it a feature that can be turned off that everytime you close a door on a 91 legacy that the door automatically locks? Even with the engine running?
  5. Great News! The salvaged d/s was off-centered. I felt where it was sticky on both ends or the u-joints. So I took it back to the jy for a refund. Just to make sure they wouldn't have any excuses to not give me my money back, i said, "of course, i would love to replace this bad one if you had another good one, but you don't." then they sent eddie out to the lot telling him not to come back until he had a good one. i don't know where he went but he came back with a complete two piece rear d/s off a 91 legacy and i only had to pay $20 diff. then i went back to mechanic and they installed it for $60. now that's a savings! Happy in AWD, Starkapopolis
  6. Just installed fourth and last air strut on 91 Legacy LS Wagon. I wasn't going to do it myself but a garage said they were going to charge me 50% more labor for customer supplied parts. When I asked why, he said, "cuz we make a profit on our parts, too." I love the feeling of saving money from people like that. I actually went in to have a rear driveshaft put in. They wouldn't use the one I found in a junkyard - said it was off-centered, and to order a new one is $478. Right now the car is only powered in front. Any ideas / places to get a cheaper rear d/s? Location: Tucson, AZ Thanks
  7. Most recent problem fixed! Out of respect for the Soob gods, I am going to keep trying to keep the air suspension afloat. When I disconnected the air compressor, I blew out an o ring. 59 cents is all it took to get it replaced. As a new ru owner, i'm sure i'll have lots more not so cheap. just found out that front rt strut is new and i had new salvaged put in back so now all it should need is a front left and i have one local. Next up is looking for leaks in the system. i love this car.
  8. Thanks, but i think it'd be a whole lot more intimidating to pull up to a ricer and open my air compressor assmebly. it sure scared me when i did it to myself. if the thing still works, how can i reseal the bottle? It sounds like it is trying to fill but when i took out the little screw, then turned the black bottle sidways and it spewed empty, some o-ring gasget or seal must have burst. anyone know if i can re-seal it so it will hold pressure again? thanks!
  9. I just bought a 91 Legacy LS wagon from my neighbor. I had salvaged rear struts replaced by a mechanic and was trying to find source of loud knocking / vibrating sound even when acc only is on. Sound was coming from front left fender between fender and batt. Took fender off, saw compressor (?) for air struts. Mistakinly unscrewed cannister and got a facefull of graphite dusty air. 2 q's: 1. Can I ever have kids again? And 2. can that cannister be filled again? It sounded like it was trying to when I put it back together but the seal seemed broken. Also, the only time that compressor doesn't make a rattling sound is while the car is lowering from its "Hoist" position, then it starts up again. Help, first day owner and in trouble with the wife!
