  1. How much for a valve adjusting tool? EA81 specifically. I have both the car and my bike that take the same 4mm wrench to adjust with, so i definately could use the tool. Let me know Will, Thanks Alex
  2. dont, I repeat dont get a hitachi rebuilt by holly. I bought one ($400) through napa many years ago and it was junk, i had to send it back to holley as it was dumping gas out of the butterfly. They actually lost track of it for a while and finally sent it back rebuilt, again. I had to pay shipping for a warranty repair. I tried using it but by the time the 90 days was up it was running quite badly, so i bought one off a local guy that had salvaged it off a motor that stuck a rod through the block. I cleaned off the oil and soot, threw it on, and it ran really well. I recently pulled the holly rebuilt one apart, very shoddy work. anyway, my two cents. Alex P.S. the dealers can still get new ones, but they are a grand.
  3. My 1982 is on its original 3AT, at 216k+. Never needed service, clutches in great shape. I have had to replace the vacuum modulator this last summer. I do admit you can hear the gears though. I dont know how many cars with auto tranny's will go so long the planetaries wear out. Alex
  4. I need one for my SU project. I will pay a reasonable amount. Thanks, Alex
  5. I know its a 44mm throat, or 1.75 inches, and they have external floats, and they came off a 1.4-1.8 volvo engine(the pair that is). so i am assuming it is an appropriate amount of carburation for what I have (EA81 with an aftermarket torque cam). I am not sure which cam I have though, just that it is higher torque. Ill look at the shafts and see whats going on tomorrow at work. I do know for 30$ for the pair I dont think i should run away. Thanks, Alex
  6. I am thinking of getting an extra manifold and hacking it, then making two L's so the carbs can sit side by side inbetween the manifolds and in front a bit. these are fairly small in width and legth, but not so tall as they would hit the hood. I also guess I need to find some air filters that will work. Maybe Ill make an airbox for the carbs and run a tube to the non battery side and put a filter there. Has anyone hacked there manifold before? EA81 or 82? Do any of the rogue roo's have a spare manifold they would be willing to part with? Thanks, Alex
  7. I am getting rid of the hitachi, its worked, wont say good or bad, just worked for many many years. Anyway, I need something better. I found a pair of SU's off a older volvo of similar displacement. These are 44mm side draft cv with external float bowl. Are there any things i should do with the manifold to make these work better? any worries I should have? What vacuum lines do I need to keep? should i make a plate for the vacuum lines? If I hack the manifold what water goes through it and how should I reroute it? Thanks in advance. Alex
  8. I dont have HLA's in my old EA81, but I do keep hearing the stories. It just so happened that I was counting parts at the harley dealership yesterday and came accross these little square rings called hydraulic seals. When I asked what they were for I was told that you take apart the HLA and put it in the bottom as a spacer to help the lifter pump up quicker. Maybe this will help with the tick of death? Has anyone tried this? Have fun, Alex
  9. Notice the special manifolds come with CV carbs, which has been talked around the local harley shop as being a not too bad carb with good options, and has been used on cars by on of the techs. Alex
  10. Always have an oil pan handy and plenty of spare fluid. I thought from the drawings I had seen that it would not leak much. Good thing I had a pan. I even had the car tilted a bit with the jack. Anyway, moving farely quickly it will lose about 2 qt's, all over the exhaust. But my car wants to shift normally again. I didnt notice a big mess of axle grease sprayed over everything on the passenger side, guess the inner boot tore. Oh well. Alex
  11. How much for a bolt on for my EA81? (thanks again for the cooler) Alex
  12. whose Ivan? Come on Mike. Anyway, sure, ill take my camera to work today, yet another day of working on my bike. BTW, did I mention i got my motorcycle permit and happened upon a 1978 yamaha 650 special in good condition? Talk to you later Mike, Alex
  13. I was out back of my work the other day and there happens to be an abandoned silver 4wd wagon out there. Doesnt look great, has a brush guard, and the owner of the lot is checking to see if we have the papers for it. I opened the hood and right off, looks like a tiny motor with top starter, Im thinking an EA71. The right inner cv is pulled out (dont know why), and the engine has about a 1/4 inch of gunk covering it. I am going to find out a price as soon as I hear about the title. I think this sub needs a new home. Alex
  14. Well, I am 6'3" and I still have 3 inches of clearance over my head. I have plenty of room for a helmet etc.... (unless its a roman legionaire helmet ). I have an 82 subaru with a ea81, so my seats are already to the point of sitting on the floor. I know the later models raised the seats a bit so Im sure this works best in early subaru's. Prior to the seat lift my window sill was above armpit level by an inch. Now its below by an inch or so, big difference as far as visibility. Alex
  15. First off, Thank you WJM for my oil adapter that arrived today. Just one question, the part description on your invoice says EA82, I have an EA81, will it still work? Second, Anyone here have loose seats or the back flops a bit? You might want to unbolt your seats, pull up the carpet under the seat, and check the damage to your outer seat brackets. This is a 16 gauge at best piece of flimsy steel. Mine was so bad the floor was dented down and their were cracks where you could see the ground. I had lost nearly 2 inches in height just from that one bracket. No that it is welded up and reinforced the seat is much straighter and doesnt wobble very much at all. I even had a one inch riser added all the way around, which brought the seat up to the perfect height, I really recomend it. Thanks for all the hard work Tony. Alex
  16. What problems can old and/or dirty fuel filters cause? Front, back, or both. Alex
  17. OK, I was thinking of draining a bit and checking, also, my filters are definately more than 2 years old, more like 5-6 years . It runs fine as long as my foot is all the way into it, just doesnt want to do anything else. Alex
  18. Well there I was trapsing along at 75 on the freeway going to my work to start working on my future bike (78 yamaha 650 special) and the engine surges and starts to die, great, i ran out of gas. Normally I can calculate how far i can go but the prices bouncing around like they have been throws me off bigtime. So I coast up to the exit at talent and realize there is only one gas station near me, Arco am/pm. That is the one gas I refuse to put in my car, Its always caused problems like pinging and detonation and I get terrible mileage. So anyway, I get 4 bucks worth and go back to the car. After pouring it in it doesnt want to start (this has never happened before just from running out of gas), but I figure its cause im parked up an incline. So it finally starts after cranking for a minute or so (not more than 15secs a time). I hop right back on the freeway and I really had it floored to get up to speed fast. As soon as I let off the gas to cruise it starts surging, off and on, I bury my foot in it again and its fine again, let off and it almost dies. So I continue on to work and I have to keep my foot on the gas to keep it idling, constantly pumping the peddle. So after sitting a few hours at work its fine, no problems, runnning great. Today it goes to work just fine to work on the bike some more. But after finishing I head home, and its surging again. Is it water in my tank or do I have to do a full filter change? Never will i buy from AM/PM again Alex
  19. sounds like clutch chatter. its not good, look for a swap or a rebuild. I could be wrong, but Ive been fearing that sound myself for many years. Alex
  20. ATF fluid burns white, just thought id mention that.
  21. Short answer, yes. Longer answer, think of if the oil is two inches over the full mark it is lapping at the pistons. This would also mean the crank is sitting in the oil to some degree. Neither of these factors are conducive to easy and good running. So all of that oil is getting into the combustion chambers most likely. That sure isnt helping either. So drain the oil, refill to spec, ~4 qts. Then youll have to run it a while to burn out any remaining oil. PS. Id call this an "extreme case". Alex
  22. cant beleive I forgot this. Truman show. Subie wagon i think drove to the beach to pick the girl up. drove all over the sand with no problem. I wonder if this is why they used a subie? Alex
  23. I am looking for front seats for my 82 sedan 4-door. Mine are like sitting in a lazyboy and trying to drive. It is making for a sore back from leaning forward all the time. Does anyone in the southern oregon area want to get rid of a pair of front seats that will bolt into my car? Ill pay a reasonable amount. Also, what possibilities are there of welding in a new base to raise the seats up about 2 -4 inches? Alex
  24. No Subaru's were hurt in the making of this film. certification by USMB
