  1. SO I am looking for some thoughts on what ought to be done with a sube that is playing dead right now. There is oil in the coolant overflow and after sitting for a day or two, there isn't anything left in the radiator. I am guessing the head gasket. Any other ideas? It's my girlfriends parents, so they are just trying to figure out what they should do. It is a 1987 gl, 2WD, manual. It is a spfi engine for sure, couldn't find the brand on the engine but that year ought to be a EA-82. Any ideas? We wouldn't be taking it to the shop, we'd do the work ourselves. I think it's about 150000 miles. Any suggestions, think it is worth it or will it just die again in a few thousand? thanks
  2. I have a 1986 subaru gl, D/R manual, and I have pulled the engine to replace the seals and get it cleaned up, however in looking at how everythign was put together I am not sure that it had been done right. I would like to get a copy of some sort of directions as to where everything is supposed to go. the hoses need to be replaced as it turns out and some of the wires are in pretty bad shape as well. If I could find a FSM for cheap I would go for it, but from what I have seen reading these boards they are not easy to get nor cheap. The engine is an eA82, Carborated, without AC. Thanks.
  3. Sooo - my alternator is already off - but I still have the other three pulleys on the car - water pump, main and then one other - do I need to pull the other two before I pull the main center puley? I have a feeling this is going to be a bit more complex than I might have liked. Thanks for the info so far . . .
  4. I am trying to replace the front seal on my engine as it seems to be leaking oil onto the timing belts on my 86 GL Wagon - Ea82 etc. How to I hold the pulleys still to pull them off to get the center cover off??
  5. Oil is fine, and the gauge is the one in the console of the car - I am not overly concerned about it, but I am going to have it torn down to a point where it is easy to replace the pump, so i thought I might as well replace it . . . and I have had to thicken my oil in the past so I wanted to know if I could get a High output. Toybuilder - I didn't see a pump for the Ea82 carbed engine on that list just the Ea81 - are they the same? Thanks for the info
  6. I Havn't lost an alternator yet, but my turn signal indicators do cause my volt meter to bounce, Does that indicate a problem that I need to catch sooner rather than later??
  7. I am pretty sure that it was reading above 25 driving, but about 0 idling - is that normal? What is normal for driving? Thanks
  8. I am wondering if they ever made a high output oil pump for my car, and if they did, where can I get it? It is an 86 GL ea82 carbed . . . thanks
  9. I was under the impression that original head gaskets would hold up better than anything that you could put in later. Is that true? This car is kind of a character. When I first picked it up I got it for 500 cause the defrost didn't work. After alot of time and taking the dash apart I finally discovered that some dipstick had done a tune up and not hooked up the vacume system correctly. Anyway, I have a feeling that this car has been wrecked and rebuilt - I could be wrong. the paint is kind of orange and red. The hood and left are orange and the right and back are red. With that in mind I think that it may have a newer engine in it so therefore I don't want to mess with the head gaskets if they are only a few years old. Anyway, Would it be better to do the HG's or just leave them until it is neccesary?
  10. Sorry for the long delay - thanks for the info - I don't need to do the head gaskets and would like to avoid that if possible. What can I do for gastkets and seals with out doing the head gasket? Is there a kit out there for that? Thanks
  11. Hi, My 86 Subaru is not keeping it's fluids in so well so I am after a full gasket set - does any one know where I can get one and about how much it would cost? It is a Ea82 Carborated engine. Thanks all
  12. Thanks - Now that I know what the shorthand means I know that it is definately a carbed motor - no doubt about that - thanks for the quick responses.
  13. Thanks - forgive the ignorance, but mpfi and spfi??
  14. Hi All - I am planning on rebuiding the engine in my 86 Sube GL 4WD, but am having some trouble bein sure of the engine. After much searching I discovered a marking that was simply EA82 - Is that all that identifies the engine or should I be looking for more? Any suggestions as to where to get a good kit for the rebuild would be nice as well.
  15. Hey - I am having a bit of difficulty with my subaru - it is kind of an interesting machine, but that is beside the point. I have a rattle of sorts of the right side. First guess is CV but I thought that I would check and see if I was the only one who had run into this problem. I discovered a few weeks ago that I had put about 7000 miles on it with the wheels slightly loose - as in when I had it of the ground and grabbed the top of the wheel it wobbled a bit. Fixed that and though that it might go away - no such luck though. I also tend to only hear the noise whne I have got my wheels turned to the left and it get louder as speed increases - you first hear it about 35 MPH. Any ideas?? I am also trying to find out what engine is in it - don't think it is the original, but records are scarce - anyone know where the serial number is on the engine??
