  1. Thanks for the replies. Like I said this has been going on for about 3 years. I have been using the Rooster2 solution for that length of time but I am afraid that the problem is intensifying. I have used 3 bottles in the past 4 months and I now have a badly leaking seal. So it is about time to cash in the chips.
  2. My 99 Legacy SUS has had the won't go into gear when put into drive problem for at least 3 years now and it is finally dying. What is the best procedure for a new transmission? Rebuilt or used? I think used could bring the same problem.
  3. Never mind I am an idiot. I hit the rocker switch on the steering column and didn't know it.
  4. I have a 99 Legacy SUS. This evening when I came home and shut off my car the parking lights came on and would not go out. The lights were not on while I was driving. I had to pull the fuse so they would go out. Any ideas?
  5. Hey all I am a new Subaru owner. I bought a garage kept 99 Outback Legacy that is outstanding shape. My question is what is the best shop manual to buy and where is the best place to get one. Thanks
  6. Rooster, according to the Subaru dealer I checked about the transmission they said that the head gasket had been replaced. That much is good. Since I have you is there any easy was to change the plugs? Is there a special tool needed? They don't appear to be in a great place. Thanks for your help.

  7. Painter,

Since you are new to Subarus, you may want to spend some time on the "search" section of the new generation Subarus. That is the forum where I wrote Delayed Forward Engagement. Subies are great cars, only weak spot on the 99 is the head gaskets. They tend to go bad, and in doing so, pump exhaust gas into the cooling system to cause engine over heating.

Also, unless you can find a receipt for timing belt replacement, and TB pulleys, you will want to replace them. A broken TB will result in bent engine valves. That is bad.

All wheel drive is great is slippery weather. You will love how your car handles winter snow and ice.

    Regards,

    Larry (Rooster2)

  8. Rooster, The car was new to the lot, just one weekend. I was checking their lot. I bought two new cars from them previously and have been treated very well. In their defense, the delayed forward engagement was not an everytime thing but........ I questioned the exact same thing that you did about them not knowing etc. As for a deal I don't know. 5k out the door for a 99 Legacy SUS with 72.5k miles that was garage kept and not a spot of rust on it. Got rid of a rust bucket Accord with 198,000 on it. It was a 98. I just hope this SUS runs like the Honda did. Took the SUS back and forth across PA last week and was very pleased.
  9. I am a new member to this forum and Subaru ownership. I have to thank Rooster2 with my whole heart. I recently bought a 99 Legacy SUS with only 72k on it. I thought way too good to be true. I soon realized that the car suffered from the dreaded delayed forward engagement. The dealer from whom I bought the car had no idea and said too bad you bought it as is. The tranny shop said $1,500 - $2,000 to fix the problem. My wife was very "ANNOYED" with my purchase. To make a long story short, I read many many articles and forums without any help. I was reading another Subaru forum when it linked Rooster's solution. I read it from begining to end went out and bought the required supplies and as advertised.............. it stopped. My only issue is how long before I bought the car did it do this and was there any damage done to the tranny? Only time will tell. Thanks again for the fix and the entertaining reading.
